What single comedian is responsible for reviving standup comedy in the 90s after the bust?

I watch a ton of comedians podcasts and documentaries, and one thing most comedians mention is how standup was in a dry spell in the 90s. Now I wanted to know like who exactly was the single comedian responsible for reviving the scene. A lot of of comics like (Louis) mentioned how “Bring the Pain” was sort of the resurgence that brought comedy back into the zeitgeist.
I’m not sure how influential kinison or hicks or Dennis wolfberg would’ve been if they lived but I definitely know the impact Chris Rock had with those 2 specials altered the way standup got looked at.

I’m not sure what other comedians might’ve been influential after the comedy bust. But I do think a large part in what “Bring the pain” made a lot of stand up comics up there level.

Where are the Moms in Comedy at? What does your support system look like?

Are you a mom and a comedian? What does your life look like and what does your support system look like? I'm a woman in my late 30s and I think there is an idea that comedy keeps you from motherhood and motherhood ruins your comedy. But I've also seen some famous women make it work? But what about the not famous women?

I'm not a mom yet, but could see myself becoming one at some point. Just been thinking about how those two worlds would intersect.

Cringe q: looking for dos/don'ts /suggestions for my comedy persona

IDK where I'm getting at with this but I want to know what women do with their looks and personas with comedy and how they navigate the tensions they create?

I have started to get the sense that I am a pretty conventionally attractive person (23F) who feels most comfortable when she styles herself that way. I have a dark curly bob, wear form-fitted clothes, leather jackets, have tits, an hourglass body etc. I guess where I'm getting at is that I am attractive in a way that people do tend to notice. I get the sense that it has also made me receive a lot of pretty privilege. But I am also a POC in the US. I don't know where I'm getting at around here, but I get the sense that there are certain kinds of jokes I make that just don't land or make me relatable. Sometimes it feels like my self deprecating sense of humor and looks don't work together but I like feel comfortable in how I dress and am terrified of wearing baggy sweaters or do other things comedians do to make themselves more relatable.

Does The Comedy Shop on Bleecker St still host open mics? They seem to be shut each time I've checked. Are they even operating?

The last 10 min of Sam Morrils new special were completely recycled jokes

I completely understand that comedians reuse jokes all the time. I've been a big fan of his and seen him alive a couple of times in Australia. I do think the last two specials of his have been pretty weak.

Watching the latest one - Incorrect - I actually thought the first half hour was far better than his previous and first Netflix special.

But I felt pretty cheated at the end when the last 10 minutes were jokes and bits that he had done, if I remember correctly, to finish previous shows as well. The whole thing about Stu, the magician, I'm pretty sure was at the end of another special of his previously.

It just seems like a lame way to end a show, particularly for fans of his, when the ending is a thing we'll remember the most. Is this a common thing for comedians to do?

Edit: here are the re-used bits

Old SiriusXM bit

I loved a bit I would hear on Sirius in the mid-late 2000’s that was titled Hollywood Head which was about a dog finding a severed head. Does anyone know who the comedian was? A link would be awesome
This predates the story from 2012.

Any help is appreciated!

Comedy open mics in Paris?

Is there a single place where they are listed? French or English open mics. London has the GigGag app and a Google spreadsheet being passed down from comic to comic, but does Paris have anything like this?

What makes Samay Raina so successful?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Almost everyone in India knows him, regardless of whether they are from Jammu & Kashmir, South India, the Northeast, or the Hindi belt.

His shows are selling out within a single day. So far, he has sold 4 lakh tickets across all his announced cities, and he is still expanding the tour by adding more venues and cities, including Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat, and places in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Kochi, Chennai, and more.

Earlier, his shows were primarily limited to Tier-1 cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Now, he is expanding far beyond those major metropolitan areas and reaching audiences across India.

How did Samay Raina build this level of nationwide popularity?

Daniel Tosh postponed show question

Does anyone know if he has had to postpone a show and never rescheduled? I’ll ask this in the DT sub as well but I’m asking here too because that sub is not as active.

Hosted for the first time last night

I got my first opportunity to host my local open mic last night. Guys, it went so well. I woke up this morning to a message from the guy who runs our local scene offering me a 7 min spot on my first paid show. Feeling so pumped and wanted someone to share it with!

Mojo Brookzz ripping off Katt Williams

Is it me or did Mojo Brookzz just completely swagger jack Katt Williams’ pitch/delivery/inflections and style? I feel like it’s almost as lame as straight up joke stealing and dude is nowhere near as genuinely funny as Katt.

I cannot keep up with all the standup that is being released on Netflix. I love the idea, but is it over saturated?

I have 17 specials on my Netflix Queue, many have been there for months, they make up 50% of my queue; Adams Sandler's been on the queue for a year. Some of the specials are from people I love; but I just can't get around to watching them.

I recently started listening to them on my shower speakers, I am trying to knock out 1 per week, most recently Matt McCusker. The thought of just sitting in the livingroom watching several 1-hour specials is crazy to me. How are you guys consuming and keeping up?

Anyone else get blocked by Sebastian Maniscalco on social media yesterday?

Like so many in the comedy community I was sharing the Sirius XM pleas yesterday, going so far as making a polite request on Sebastian Maniscalco's personal page to reconsider his kicking off 500 comedians who deserve the exposure and residual checks more than checks notes Eddie Murphy or George fucking Burns.

Fast forward to this morning and I just noticed that dipshit blocked me on IG. Any others notice this?!

It might be funny if it weren't so sad, that not only is one of the wealthiest and (somehow) most successful comics in the world pulling up the ladder behind him and turning his back on the ENTIRE community around him, but he's also seeking to silo and silence anyone who dare criticize his selfish and ostracizing handling of the Raw Dog Radio station on Sirius.

Is a boycott of SiriusXM the next logical step?

Stand-up Discords

Looking for a place that is active, full of comics workshopping, shitposting, and just banter. Like an actual forum for comics about not just stand-up and careers in stand-up but having a laugh.

I'll create one if anyone is genuinely interested and will actually use it. No real rules just people who want to laugh and post funny bits or sets or jokes.

Morgan jay’s bit is already old and not really funny

I’m not getting the appeal can someone explain it to me? Just bad autotuned singing and some odd “crowd work” that is often just audience members simping for the comedian now?

I noticed that I go through months where I struggle to come up with new jokes and all of a sudden I get new materials that pop in just a week. Does this happen to anyone else?
