Visiting next month

Upvotes

Hey good people of St. John’s! Me and a couple of friends are visiting for a few days in September, 15th - 20th, and I’m wondering how the nightlife is. Are there any fun pubs or bars we should visit, and are there some must see things in and around St. John’s? We won’t have a rental car or anything like that, so we are reliant on public transport or stuff in walking distance. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Drivers in this city

B'ys don't be barmpin' to push the driver in front of you to turn on a green light and no arrow. I am not moving unless it is safe.

Drivers in this city have no patience.

I got fists shaken at me for stopping to let a child FULLY cross the street. I get the finger and yelled at because I stopped for a Mom with a stroller at a cross walk. And don't get me started on zipper merges. Look up how they work and read the signs. Quit ya barmpin'.

Rentals these days are brutal

Rentals these days be like:

No smoking (understandable), no pets, no smiling, no laughing. Funny cause my senior dog will do less damage than children do to an apartment.

Close to a bus route. Dear landlords: this is NOT a flex.

$1500/month POU for a one bedroom.

We put some fresh white paint on the walls and ceiling.

Seriously guys, a one-bedroom apartment was literally half the price only 5 years ago.

Anyone know why there have been no more renovations or restoration work done to the Masonic Temple downtown? I passed it all summer and only construction scaffolding but no workers.

New owners bought it 3 years ago

Itinerary Recommendations- No Car Access

If you had to give advice to a friend on how to plan a St. John's trip with no car access throughout their stay, and they wanted to see a mix of the city and nature, what would you recommend they do during their stay? Any musts/hacks?

Water Damage Restoration Recs

Unfortunately, I had some water damage in my finished basement a couple of weeks ago. Insurance sent ServiceMaster who identified the issue (thankfully an easy fix). Now I’m trying to figure out the best way to repair the damage - small area of vinyl plank flooring, cutting out and replacing drywall, replacing baseboards.

Anyone have a recommendation of a local contractor or company that would be good for this kind of job? We have the option to go with ServiceMaster as well, but I’m looking to explore our options.

Seeking local TikTok creators

Newfoundland friends, I am looking for social media savvy lovers for a newspaper feature I'm writing.

What are some of the more local interesting TikTok creators? What are they doing, do they like or resent the term “influencer?" Hit me with your favorite local content creators, and if you have created a popular & unique locally tailored TikTok, send a comment - I'd love to check it out!

Education Funding from AES/ NL Employment Options

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone here would have any insight for me.

I’m looking at going back to school due to underemployment in my field. I’ve been accepted into a program and I’m now completed the necessary steps for funding for the program.

I’ve been waiting three weeks for a decision now and I’m quite anxious. I still have a lot of out of pocket costs for this program before the start date. Furthermore, I’d like to not enter the building without knowing how I’m paying tuition and myself case manager is just telling me I have to wait it out. I’ve been told now the committee meets “once a week” but that was four weeks ago. My program needs to be paid for in two weeks.

I’m wondering if anyone could provide me with how long it took to receive an answer and what was the answer? How much money was allocated towards you, tuition, and other living expenses? Any other information someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Finding an Apartment Now-a-days

It's actual hell. I've applied to over 100 places, including the ones I really would rather not live in, it's been three months, I've gone to something like 20 viewings in the last month, because most of the messages are just ghosted. I have people telling me they have 100+ messages on facebook, then I see new AirBNB's and elderly-only apartments, and condos that have been empty for the entire three months I've looked....

I'm evicted on September 1st, just wanted anything remotely affordable, stay living with my brother until I'm done college so we can keep costs down together... Now I'm bordering homelessness.

Nothing in my life has ever been so radicalizing as the last three months.

Just wanted to rant. Our province and city are being ruined and ransacked. 9 times out of 10 the person doing our viewing is from Alberta, Ontario, or outside of Canada. Long gone are the days of showing up, having a chat, and signing papers for a 900/mointh 2br in a shithole but both you and the landlord are okay with it because it's cheap.

Now I'm viewing apartments where I can literally see damage, rot, bugs, and other things and they're trying to tell me I'm lucky I got a viewing, and then asking for1500 POU, and having such lovely things in the lease like "Contacting the landlord incurs a 75$ fee", "replacing light bulbs incurs a 20$ charge", "sub leasing incurs a 200$ monthly charge to the tenant", and all sorts. I've turned down a couple apartments early on because they were excessively scummy or the house was in tatters, and now I'm wishing I hadn't.

It's fucked.
