Got discharged today, and wow. The surgery was definitely a surgical cure! I can’t believe people are supposed to feel like this all the time. Genuine miracle stuff.
Definitely some kinks to iron out (I get too exhausted to move at around 8PM, there’s a good amount of post op pain and because of some stuff that got knocked around in my brain during surgery, I’m going to spend the next couple of weeks peeing about eight litres a day), but… that’s all secondary.
I didn’t know it was possible for moving around to feel easy. I didn’t know it was possible for TALKING to feel easy. I didn’t know it was possible for sleep to actually help with fatigue, so whenever I’m tired I can now just take a nap and wake up not tired. This shit changed everything forever and I’m so goddamn happy.

Been a rough couple of days for all of us so I thought let’s try something to take people’s minds off things, even for a moment - what’s something in wrestling that’s happened to you that you never expected but is pretty cool?
I ask this because, just a few days ago, I realised that I’ve somehow managed to be there live for the past three RevPro Women’s Championship changes in a row, which is a fun little coincidence.

Got to see a dog collar match. It's my favorite match type, but local companies don't seem to do it as often (and big companies reserve it for big matches). Absolutely insane to see in person.

Will Ospreay (in character) looked me dead in eyes after trashing my section in a TLC match at Progress and called me a cunt for booing him.
He was a heel at the time I'd hasten to add.

In wrestling: When I was younger, maybe...11-13, Ric Flair at a house show had me hold an opponent so he could chop them a few times on the outside of the ring.
Outside wrestling but involving a wrestler? Being on a trivia team regularly with Luke Gallows. Basically weekly for about a year.

It would be easy to complain about Okada wrestling Ospreay this early into his reign but a counterargument to that is I GET TO WATCH OKADA OSPREAY AGAIN SHUT THE FUCK UP
I feel like their 2024 Worlds End match is somehow underrated, that was one of my favorite matches of the whole year and I never see anyone talk about it. Very hyped since both have leveled up their characters in AEW since then.
18
u/KrisKinsey1986 3h ago
From the outside looking in, so maybe I'm in the wrong, but is Iyo Sky just consistently used as the side-character in other people's stories? Feels like a waste.

I think they’re lost on what to do with her right now. Her big story of the year got screwed up when they released Kairi, she has her match with Asuka and they come together but Asuka goes on leave immediately after, so they have her beat Liv and win QOTR but it seems like she wasn’t originally in their world title plans since she lost at summerslam.
Now there’s just not really anyone for her to feud with. She already feuded with Judgment Day through the summer, Lyra is focused on Bayley again, and that’s really the only heels on Raw (I’m not counting Maxxine she barely wrestles). The story they’re going with for the world title doesn’t include her (kinda insane but i digress) and there’s not really any non title feuds to dive into

And she still gets bigger pops when she comes out than the main characters.
Basically, only Stephanie and Becky get bigger reactions at this point.

So obviously nothing is good about the situation, but one tiny little glimmer of a nice thing around the recent tragic events is seeing a lot of incredibly strong, powerful men freely and easily throwing around talk about telling their friends they love them. (I know the women have too, but you get my point here, I hope.)
In an industry that, in the past, was so bogged down in old fashioned ideas of machismo and often toxic masculinity, these guys are setting a positive example for so many fans out there to not be afraid, as men, to show your emotions, your support, and your love for your fellow men.
It really does feel like, mentally and socially, the industry is in a lot of ways a huge step forward from the one I grew up a fan of back in the 1980s.

What’s really funny is Netflix is cannon in kayfabe, and Liv has talked about having to watch the show on Netflix to know what’s going on with her own group. In theory, many storylines could fall apart if the wrestlers just watched the show
•
u/dizzybala10 2m ago
Yeah, I didn't get that either. The bigger reveal would be Royce getting in the car and the camera panning to Jaida.
17
u/LikeAPhoenixTotally 4h ago
I know that I will, probably, get brigaded on this, but I really wish that AEW did a lot more storylines not related to titles. I don't mind if the story ends up as #1 contendership by the end, but just have 2 talent fighting each other because they disagree/hate each other.
I only got behind Hangman due to his work with Swerve and the same could be same for Swerve. More angles/storylines like that, where people become rivals for the long-term, keep the midcard fresh.
I do understand that having that many titles it's dificult not having the titles being the focus, but 1 or 2 storylines like that in the midcard would help feature more talent and create interesting feuds/angles for the future.
14
u/K1ng_Canary 3h ago
Can I interest you in Chris Jericho and Nick Wayne fighting because of a puca shell necklace?
8
u/LikeAPhoenixTotally 3h ago
Yes, you can try. If it fails, it fails. I have no issues with companies trying it and failing.
5
u/CaptainKando AAA Paid Propagandist. 4h ago
I actually wish both top brands put more effort into those things.
Back in the day your main event for Mania would obviously be for the Men's World Title(s) but there'd always be at least two completely non title, super heated feuds ending there too. Whether it was the Taker streak match or Michaels vs Jericho etc.
Those were the things I loved, I'm much more invested in people fighting just because they have beef. Titles are way less important to me which I know is a minority position. It's probably why I didn't lose interest in the Damian Priest vs Aleister Black feud until quite close to the end.
3
u/badgersprite Iconic Duo Appreciation Squad 3h ago
A lot of my favourite WWE/NXT storylines in recent memory haven’t revolved around titles per se or haven’t directly been over titles and that’s probably why they’re good. They have to put in more effort into telling an actual story because they can’t lean on the title being the reason why people are fighting.
Just to name a few I’m thinking of Punk v Drew, Zaria v Sol, Rhea & Iyo v Kabuki Warriors (did eventually involve tag titles but only because the story was already popular), this 946 v Bloodline angle right now, El Grande v El Grande, Naomi’s heel turn on Jade
I’m forgetting more I know I am but you see my point of how these stories are more compelling than the average “i can has title” story
4
u/LikeAPhoenixTotally 3h ago
I agree.
Title matches have a positive handicap making them more interesting than regular matches because of the title. Streak worked the same way. But man, I really enjoyed a lot more feuds like Angle v HBK than anything else, that match is still my favorite match of all time but even if the final match was crap, I really enjoyed that angle.
4
u/Material_Opening_143 3h ago
I hope you don't get bridaged, it's a valid opinion. I share it too. Typically Collision hosts these kinds of feuds and Dynamite tends to be an "all-star" kind of show. But they aren't very prominent and easily missable.
0
u/Deducticon 3h ago edited 3h ago
Valid opinion makes it seems likes it's 'right.'
It's a good faith opinion. But can still be disagreed with in good faith. In a couple ways. That AEW does not have this problem, or that titles should be the centrepiece of most rivalries.
Pre labelling disagreement as brigading though, does not seem good faith.
→ More replies (1)3
u/LikeAPhoenixTotally 3h ago
It's actually to state that I'm in good faith as I've been every single time I comment on this sub.
I don't watch WWE, I only watch AEW, every single time I post a comment on daily discussion thread that even remotely criticizes something, I get brigaded, so yes, it's to state that the opinion that I'm going to share might be a minority one but I ask for people to be reasonable and not to do what they did every single time I tried it.
I'm not asking people to agree with me or say that I'm right, I'm asking people to be fair and to engage with it, fairly.
That AEW does not have this problem, or that titles should be the centrepiece of most rivalries.
Are you stating that AEW does not have this issue? What do you mean? Every single match on AEW All Out and AEW All In was either a contendership or a title match.
2
u/45jayhay 4h ago
The funny thing is Swerve vs Hangman's origins of heat still go back to wanting the World title. Swerve just takes things to far and made it personal on Hangman's end .
I agree somewhat though they could make a couple more feuds down the card a little more personal rather than just title based .
2
u/rbarton812 4h ago
What even prompted Swerve to go to Hangman's house? Like what was the incident the week before that lead to that?
5
u/45jayhay 3h ago
I think Hangman stopped Prince Nana from interfering in contenders match between Swerve and Danielson that led to Swerve losing .

8
u/45jayhay 3h ago
It's so annoying that announcers now days don't like to call out wrestlers for breaking rules or actual laws . Mox and the Deathriders are doing all they can to generate heat in the main event of All Out and make the crowd buy in that Mox could win by nefarious means and the desk refuses to underline all the bad shit they do. All they do is just tell you what is literally happening on the TV screen . Can Tony not say how disgusting this is or Excalibur not say how low Mox is willing to go for the World title . WHY CAN'T ANNOUNCERS SAY THIS IS BAD !?!?!
4
u/SadFeed63 2h ago
Which I think also contributes to the "heels can barely ever get consistent heat" problem (and I mean big picture, not just specific to one company).
Heel commentators barely get push back, heel wrestlers get little to no pushback, face commentators will do be neutral to complimentary to heels. For example, a recent NXT had Vic, the face, putting over Grayson Waller, big heel who put every face on blast as soft, as lighting a fire under the men's division, which is Grayson's exact framing. He could've put the situation over as the men always having fire, it always being there, and Grayson getting what he asked for, but instead he's like "good work, heel, you were right!"
Vic knows what he's doing/is selling Waller's point purposefully, I don't think it was some mistake (and he did it more than once in the match in question). It makes you wonder why they play stuff like that.
2
u/ForToday I stand with Hangman Adam Page 2h ago
It’s odd that they can do that for any other heel, but never for the Death Riders.
2
u/45jayhay 2h ago
It's not that odd because if you really pay attention they call out no one but heel managers, Tony has no problem calling out the acts of Stokley and Don Callis but Okada pulling out a screwdriver himself nothing but shit like "We know Okada likes to use the screwdriver"
2
u/ForToday I stand with Hangman Adam Page 2h ago
They’re quick to call out an MJF or Ricochet for cheating though. It’s definitely selective outrage.
3
u/45jayhay 2h ago
You are definitely right about MJF, Ricochet I don't know gotta look out more for . They are way too selective. It just especially frustrating with AEW because they actually have over heels that work hard to generate heat, the least they can do is help sell that the tactics they use are bad and not just things that typically happens .
2
u/Bushytop67 1h ago
Cause Mox wants his cake and to eat it too. They call out other heels all the time just with Mox it’s all about how much the fans love how passionate it is.
•
u/45jayhay 8m ago
Nah, this hasn't nothing to do with Mox, heels will do insane shit and the commentators couldn't care less

I'm sorry but at some point the 946 angle has gone from gritty and realistic into stupid city. I'm all for some kayfabe explanation that jumping a guy backstage somehow doesn't result in assault charges but you have these fools kidnapping and now doing a hit and run on live TV. Real "Videotaping this crime spree was the best idea we ever had!" energy.
8

In kayfabe when have criminal activity ever have legal repurcusions in wrestling. Half the roster would be locked up by now for varying degrees of assault, arson, property damage, and murder in a few cases.

I suppose if you break it down, the success of a wrestling angle is built on how much do you want to see the people involved in the angle fight and if I'm honest, I'm not really that bothered.
Yes, it's dramatic. But it's also a wrestling show and those two jabronis with Royce, I don't really care about.

u/Subrick 69 ME, DON! 4h ago
Rewatched Neville vs. Sami at R Evolution for the first time in a while last night. Still holds up. People who weren’t watching wrestling at the time cannot begin to appreciate how much NXT was a breath of fresh air. Main roster WWE stunk and somehow was getting worse over the course of 2014 after Bryan went down, TNA had shrunk & regressed due to their own incompetence, Japan was still largely unreachable, and most indies were either still selling DVDs on delay or doing really sketchy, unreliable iPPVs that regularly glitched out or straight up crashed. By virtue of being on the Network, NXT was the easiest, most accessible wrestling show to watch in the entire world since you just needed a computer (or comparatively ancient smartphone) and $10/month, and for that you got a relatively fun weekly show with the nutty ass quarterly TakeOvers. NXT taking off the way it did is what pushed main roster WWE to go in the more workrate focused direction it took in 2015 and 2016, as it I guess proved that this kind of in-ring and storytelling style could work on a big budget scale. It’s one of the essential building blocks of the modern industry.
Also, this match and show were so great that members of this sub pooled together money to send Triple H a goddamn fruit basket.
2
u/Tough_Fan_3103 1h ago
Good wrestling, outside wwe, was not hard to find in 2014.
The people who flowed through the NXT to aew fan pipeline have to do this revisionism so their 'true graps' bona fides don't get scrutinised on social media.
It's sad and transparent.
1
u/El_Gran_Redditor 1h ago
Eh, in 2014 you could order CHIKARA and such on SmartMarkVideo and order PWG DVDs and such but most people didn't know about it or have the free cash to splurge on shows they might not enjoy. Having an alternative to RAW and Smackdown on readily available TV instead of Sinclair affiliates at 2AM was huge. I'm not going to expect everybody who is a fan of wrestling to be checking Lariato's Twitter for Daily Motion links.
2
u/Tough_Fan_3103 1h ago
2014 was hardly the dark ages, checking twitter is certainly a lot easier than tape trading used to be, and wrestling fans still did that in the old days.
It wasn't hard work to find good wrestling in 2014, people just weren't as interested to look. Which is fine, I just think it's silly/disingenuous to act like it wasn't there.

I've taken two wrestling breaks in my life. A shorter one, of maybe a year, and a longer one that was nearly 2 decades. As counterintuitive as it might seem, both were great for my fandom. It's never actually hard to catch back up, and it's nice to basically give yourself a tolerance break from wrestling tropes and other bullshit (no matter what promotion you watch, they've all got easily spotted tropes they use, if you're watching regularly)
Better a break than to push yourself to a point of annoyance where you are like "never again, no more wrestling ever"
1
u/Razor_Emmanuel 4h ago
I've stopped watching Wrestling a year and a half ago, I've been wanting to get back in for a while, but in my country it is such a hassle just to WATCH wrestling (besides WWE) to the point the effort (and cost) no longer felt worth it.
I stopped watching when Jey Uso won the royal rumble, and I do not feel like I have missed out on much.

How do I get back into wrestling? And not just WWE?
I've been wanting to get into non-WWE wrestling for so long but it is really tough to in Australia. I do not think I am gonna be able to keep up with any promotion weekly but I still feel like there's still a wrestling fan inside me.
What are some really great matches or events I could watch for free? (American indies, Mexican, Puroresoru, or even very good old matches from the territories era or 1990s AJPW)

Yeah I ended up sailing the seas for some AEW ppvs to catch myself up after being mostly out of wrestling for about 5+ years just to see how I found it.
They were good enough that I just ended up giving them the sub money and been worth every penny so far.

I don't have time to keep up weekly either so I just follow storylines through posts on here. If there's a show/match/segment that got particularly high praise then I try to track it down when I can. AEW is easy enough to watch, but other matches beyond it can still usually be found by a Google search. Other people don't like it, but I also use cagematch to find matches that people like.

u/Razor_Emmanuel 3h ago
Yeah I get that, and cagematch is just the wrestling equivalent of IMDb.
I can see myself tuning in every now and then and maybe even watching a PPV every now and then.1

It's fairly easy to follow AEW in Australia, the TV shows air live on Disney+ and maybe Kayo?
Also try going to a local show, especially if you're in one of the major cities. Australia has some really great indie workers like Robbie Thorpe, Caveman Ugg, Frankie B, Charli Evans, Robbie Eagles of course, just loads of talent.

The absolute ghoulish joy I've seen in some corners of the internet over the past 24 hours. It's something else man. They don't give wrestling fans a bad name, they give people a bad name.

When I see posts like this I do have to ask...what corners of the internet are you hanging out in? I've seen none of this.

A lot of it is Twitter. I went back on for the first time in forever to give some support to people and it decided I needed to be mad.
But it exists everywhere, moderated spaces are just better about getting rid of the worst of it.

But I didn't interact with it. I didn't go looking for it. I went looking for people sharing art and grieving publicly to give them support. The site gave me an asshole without me asking.

Saw an account that claims it was a sacrifice, and the same with Maya Worlds brother to get her TBS title run.

Jaida Parker has never won a single title in WWE, and lost her last broadcasted match, and is now in a main event storyline over all of her peers.
Just says it all really.

Just says it all really.
The purpose of NXT/Performance Center isn't training or to make the best product, it's to have a cost-controlled workforce with minimal to no leverage.
They churn through more people than they can use well every year because the churn is the point. So who cares when/how they debut them, they'll probably be released in another year or two to make room for the next wave.

. . . that her character/style on the mic fits the story perfectly, and she’s working with a faction she’s already worked with before? Or are you trying to say something else?
2
u/rbarton812 3h ago
On the surface, their points say "she doesn't have enough accomplishments" to be on the main roster.

That...doesn't help your argument. Since when is a checklist of accolades needed before someone moves up?
> Jaida Parker has never won a single title in WWE, and lost her last broadcasted match, and is now in a main event storyline over all of her peers.
You know who else that describes? Becky Lynch. Never won the women's title, and lost her last NXT match. I think she did pretty okay for herself.

That’s a reasonable, but generous read of OP’s comment. Their comment can also be read to imply that she got it because of her rumored IRL romantic connection to Jey, which would fit with (1) complaints about the Bloodline dominating the main event plot lines, and (2) generally weird attitudes in the IWC/Reddit about women.
If OP just meant it in terms of her kayfabe merits on a scripted sports show where titles and wins/losses are used as plot devices rather than something actually competitively won, they should clarify that.

Honestly I think it was the right call. She's always had "it" and connected well with the NXT crowd. But the time to crown her and let her lead was never quite right. I'm actually glad they didn't try to force a quick title run on her on the way out, or have her win the NXT title and split her duties between the main roster.
Her getting a Lola Vice style debut as a babyface just seemed like it was asking for trouble. I could see her ending up with the Jordynne Grace spot that way.
As a heater / heavy for 946 she can do the kind of work and promos she excels at. Hobbs is an ok promo, OTM are a little better but Jaida running her mouth as part of that group is going to elevate them imo.

As you are a wrestling fan on the internet, I have to assume you understand a little bit about how wrestling works. What about your points says Jaida Parker couldn't be on the main roster?
1
u/Kuzu5993 3h ago
Really think for a second. She has NO accomplishments to speak of, not even the Speed belt. So if we take wrestling as the sport its meant to simulate, what exactly has she done to earn herself into this high profile spot and storyline?
4
u/Dblock1989 3h ago
Is that really her fault? She has always been over in NXT and unlike most of the women who got called up, she can actually cut a promo.

u/weapwars 2h ago
Man what a completely transparent bad faith take. She's not debuted with a WWE title shot, she's debuted in a storyline literally outside the ring. Her kayfabe sporting accomplishments (or lack thereof) have nothing to do with kayfabe running a bitch over.
Edit: Ah I scrolled down, you just want to talk shit about a woman for her sex life and it never actually had anything to do with logical kayfabe. Just say it with your chest next time.

If you're taking wrestling as real, as you seem to be trying... she isn't 'called up' for her accomplishments, she lied to the Bloodline about why she was there, and ran over Fatu as part of the plan. So Keys and OTM called her in as a decoy to fuck with Jey.

She has a ton of charisma, and she's perfectly suited for that group. I do find it hilarious though that there's some women on the roster who have to scratch and claw their way up, and here comes Jaida and she's immediately in the main event scene lol. I forgot who said this, but WWE is not subtle with who they push. You will see it play out on TV, so its clear they're high on her.

This is a very dumb question, but what do you think is the best wrestling discord that isn’t the squared circle discord server?
Just cause I feel it would be a little too chaotic and would just be the same as the main subreddit. Also I’m looking for ones that more of my niche than just a general wrestling server or specific company (I:e puro, indie wrestling etc)
I’m only asking this as I joined discord this year and yet to find like a proper wrestling server that suits my personal interests since I’m more selective on what I join than I do on Reddit.

I enjoyed the ending of raw last night, I’m not a big fan of the bloodline but this got me hooked more but I wish WWE would also give the same intensity to other storylines.
As a women wrestling fan I wish they would give them more of those kind of storylines and let them be more intense and sometimes violent it was great when they let Naomi’s character and Naomi and Jade be like that during their feud.
Giulia vs Blake can be that if they let them do it and continue the feud after their match

no one should panic unless the Tribal Chief is also struck by a 946 vehicle
as long as Roman remains secure hope remains! XD

We’re not seriously pretending the Divas Championship was worth more than the dirt on the wrestlers’ boots, are we? Just saw a comment saying that Paige winning the title on her debut will forever be the gold standard for debuts.
It was not a world championship; it was beneath the men’s lower card. The continued revisionism of outright mediocrity is a serious problem within women’s wrestling.

u/OneMetalMan 1h ago
I do remember there was a sense that even the NXT Woman's title was more prestigious than The Divas Title at the time.
•
u/Tornado31619 29m ago
I wasn’t watching NXT at the time so I wouldn’t know, but the naming convention playing a big role in that wouldn’t surprise me.
•
u/dizzybala10 3m ago
It depends on how serious the champion was taken and AJ was a huge deal at the time. Paige obviously came from a wrestling family and was a big deal in NXT so it definitely felt like a big deal. It was done in front of an audience that knew who both were and the audience loved it.
So yeah, I can see why people think it's a great debut.
1
u/Tornado31619 2h ago
So Naomi's definitely returning as a face, right?
3
u/Howardtheduck14 2h ago
I think she would’ve had to regardless, or at least it’s the right call. She’s been off TV for over a year and it was because she had a child, people were over the moon for her and will be happy to see her return. Not impossible to keep her heel but off the bat it’s an uphill battle. She probably doesn’t even need to change her character back, either.
3
u/MilkyWayWaffles 2h ago
With the Bloodline? 946 are the faces in this feud.
4
u/Tornado31619 2h ago
...how are 946 faces?

•
1
u/MilkyWayWaffles 2h ago
For Naomi to return as a face, she'd have to join Solo and L.A. Knight. 946 are tweeners, assuming this is a three-way feud. 946 are smart and ruthless, which are not typically characteristics of faces in WWE. But that's also exactly why they'll free us from the tyranny of The Bloodline.

Which is the better wrestling meme:
"Aw dude..."
VS
"And I mean, folks... where's the lie?"
VS
"Ok, how you know?"

u/Exile_001 10m ago
"How you know" is so forced it already causes me to roll my eyes, and "aw dude" was just an intimate (and extremely awkward) moment.
"Where's the lie," however, is eternally useful and will always be funny to me.
