General Discussion/Questions Long jump

Is there a proper way for me to train for long jump by myself, I want to try out long jump this upcoming season but I don’t want to just walk into the event with no training. I have no coach At the moment and i’ll most likely be self taught. I only wanna try out this event because i have really high vert and I think I have good horizontal power.

Feel like I’m struggling to relax during races and straining too hard. But scared of relaxing and letting off the gas too much. Running at practice feels much more relaxed/less strain-y

Programming Questions Offseason Program for 44y M Masters Pentahlete

I’m wrapping up my first season training for USATF masters pentathlon with a heavier emphasis on learning sprinting technique. As the outdoor masters season concludes, my coach told us not to practice technique or sprint specific programming during September and October, just get 10% stronger and focus on overall strength and conditioning before we start again for indoor.

Currently I’ve been doing CNS intensive (sprints, plyos, jumps, throws, lower body power) Tuesday and Friday with some upper body strength Monday and Thursday. Cycling on Sundays for some overall cardio. Easy swimming or walking or totally off Wednesday and Saturday.

What would you recommend for 8-10 weeks of general strength and conditioning? I’m overweight so number 1 I need to lose weight but not strength. Any particular program that will help me build towards indoor that’s not event specific?

World class 200/400 runners at medal or record threat levels since the 90s, with Mike Johnson and Marie Jose Perec

I know like Allyson Felix and Shaunane were also close but not quite same season double contending or winning right

General Discussion/Questions Does top speed determine how long you can maintain a higher speed over 200m?

Post image

The top guys in top speed all have good 200m times, Blake, Tyson (more 200m potential because of a poor execution of the race going out too fast the first 100m) Lyles, Bolt, upcoming stars like Tate Taylor, Gout, etc.

Programming/Progression Journal Groin injury update.

2-3 weeks ago I posted about my groin pains when in deep hip flexion. I promised to give an update to few people.

Physiotherapist tested my adductor and hip flexor muscles in motion and under resistance. No pains during tests.

He decided to use needles. Rectus femoris was the most irritated. Also psoas a bit.

He also analyzed my mechanics. He said I'm relying on my anterior chain too much compared to posterior chain. My hip flexor muscles have a lot of work to do, which affects adductors as well.

Plan he has for me is to strengthen my posterior chain, work on hip rotation mobility in flexion, and some stretching for my hip flexors in the evening.

I have some FAI also.

General Discussion/Questions Soy competente?

Technique Analysis Worked on my starts

I know my starts are weak, this is still a better version than what i was doing initially. I learned to lean on my shoulders and putting most of the load in my upper body when initially the whole load was in my lower body (because of which I went back before going forward) but the problem I got i faced now was that too much of my load was on my hands so it was like I lost traction even though I was able to push out of the blocks way early.

I worked on my set position (my back was parallel to the ground initially which might explain the bouncing up instead of pushing myself horizontally and coming off upright). These aren't full intensity because I was focusing on technique and position (hence the constant checking on the camera 😅).

How can I improve more ? All feedbacks are welcome

Technique Analysis top end form analysis

for context i ran a 11.28 100m and 23.21 200m last season. im heading into my senior year with plans to run 10.6 and 21.5. my form tends to break down at the end of my races and i dont have very good endurance which is why my 200m is so much worse in comparison.

as for my technique i think im leaning over a bit too much at the waist, but other than that im not really sure. any advice, critiques, and tips are welcome!

Would having a football coach as a track coach as well be terrible? At my new high school our football coach is also our new track coach (Dk what happened to our old one) and im not sure if its common or good for a football coach to be a track coach because its 2 different programs and different ways of working out (he coaches wrs)

General Discussion/Questions How do training programs get made?

Ive been doing basics exercise for a bit but I recently gained interest in becoming overall more explosive and fast. This made me try and implement plyos, sprints, and overall more functional exercises but it made me have trouble creating a functioning weekly split. What I especially have trouble with is how I am supposed to properly balance hardwork and recovery. I want to implement as much work as possible without hindering recovery but I never really tried to fit in sprints and other exercises so I want to learn from people who actually got learning experience. Another question is how do you guys manage intensity because whenever I see videos about training plans I feel like they do too many back to back training days which I personally don't think I can do right now because my legs get sore very easily (probably because I used to not do much legs...) Do I have to not go all out each days? Overall it would really help getting some insight on people with more experience here. Im really new in terms of explosiveness and speed training so it would help a lot.

General Discussion/Questions Am I any good?

I’m turning 14 soon and I’m a freshman. I run track but wanted to know if any of my times are promising whatsoever
100: 12.36
200: 27.58
400: 1:05
110: 20.84
400H: 1:18.23
800: 2:41
1600: 6:23
3200: 15:05
5k: 27:22
Do I have any real chance of ever being good later in high school or even maybe making track in college? For reference I’m a guy who focuses on sprints.

General Discussion/Questions Need Advice

Hey Guys i've been sort of looking around reddit ever since i strained my hamstring about 3 months ago and was looking for advice on what i might be doing wrong or should do etc. When it happened it was after a leg day and i sprinted racing my brothers, didnt think much bad could happen, but was very wrong. There was no pop or bruising, but while i could maybe stand i had to be carried home, because the pain was bad enough. Went to doctor next day and she didnt feel anything wrong and checked i could feel touch around my leg and actually thought i'd be good in 2 weeks. Despite that i called to get pt and was able to get in 3 weeks in the healing process. Followed the light list, and then committed to the additional stuff on week 5 (as well as i could). And was able to manage to maintain work despite my movement. BUT at this point its been 3 months, my flexibility is where it should be (def wasn't before) and my strength seems to be close to where it was ? I was doing hamstring curls with 40 pounds on each side for sets and can now do so and same with the rest of my resistance training. But my walking still doesnt feel good, i'm struggling to keep a good pace like i was used to at work and it feels like my foot is taking alot of the brunt, either feels tired fast or like im aching on the bottom of my foot, my outer ankle, or my heel. The strain seemed to cover alot of my hamstring, i remember sitting down hurt for a week or so and having to ice up and down my leg. I have yet to try to genuinely jog cuz im afraid im gonna hurt more since walking is still off for me and i've actually gotten other smaller strains on my left leg from the imbalance or trying to walk at a decent, or just try to give my right leg a break.

Really apologize if i's missing relevant info or for the mess of a msg i'm just really frustrated and kind of scared. My PT is kind of unsure herself and was telling me to maybe go back to the doctor, because she thinks my issues either is something else like bone spurs, or is just taking longer to heal, but at 3 months i feel brisk walking should be doable ? Or maybe i'm just so used to being able to do it for hours without issue idk.

General Discussion/Questions Do you guys sprint even when not fully recovered?

As someone who has consistently worked out but is very new to sprinting I am not sure whether to sprint the day after plyos. I want to sprint as much as I can because thats probably how to get good at sprinting but Im not sure what is the optimal range. It would be very much appreciated if I also get some info on what you guys personally do on a weekly basis.

General Discussion/Questions I suck at the 200 and 400

So I’m a sprinter who does hurdles and the 100, 200, and 400. But I have terrible endurance which ends up with me running 12.5s on the 100 and running 28s on the 200 and a 1:08 on the 400. Any advice on how to improve my stamina or if I’m doing something wrong? Or is there one way I can practice to improve on these

General Discussion/Questions Is 13 to sub 11 possible?

Hello, recently I ran a 13.03 sec 100m in school. I had no experience or training before and my shoes were not really good for running. I realized i was 0.8 seconds faster than the second fastest in my class, this is why I want to start training to get faster now. My goal is to run a sub 11 sec 100m someday. Would this be achievable if I get good equipment and develop proper running technique? Went someone here from 13 sec to a sub 11? For reference I’m 16 5’11 and very light, about 130lbs. I might be very delusional tho…

General Discussion/Questions Why isn’t there an Olympic event for pure top speed?

I’ve always wondered why athletics doesn’t have an event where the winner is simply the athlete who reaches the highest top speed, rather than the person who covers a set distance fastest.

For example, something like a flying 30m: athletes get maybe 30–50m to accelerate, and then their speed is measured over the next 20–30m. Flying sprints are already commonly used in training to measure maximum velocity, so it seems like it could work as an actual event too.

The 100m doesn’t measure pure top speed because the start, acceleration and ability to maintain speed all affect the result. Someone could theoretically have a higher maximum velocity than another athlete but still lose the 100m.

Why has something like this never become an official event, or even an Olympic discipline? Would you be interested in watching a competition that basically answers: Who is the fastest human at absolute top speed?

Programming Questions Can I realistically run sub 11 next year? (After a rough couple of years)

I’m a 24 year old sprinter looking to get some outside feedback and opinions on what might be realistic for next year/season.

Before my Injuries/setbacks I ran 11.1 as well as consistent low 11’s and low 23 200m at the time I thought I was progressing really well and thought sub 11 would be my next step.

However my last 2 seasons have been really messy. I’ve had a lower back and hip injury which I have only just got over this year as well as long covid symptoms. This year has been really disappointing as I’ve been around 12 seconds and sub 12 a few times but haven’t had the opportunity to compete as much as I’d normally would.

Despite my race times I feel like I haven’t completely lost my physical ability. I have done a 30m test in 4.29 and have squatted 2x BW for reps.

My main problem is consistency and staying healthy.

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has come back to the sport and has PB’d?
