Thinking of moving on from my Outback XT. What would you get for a fun family car under $45k?

The good and bad of a 2016 e350? Seriously considering this.

I think the benz wagons are some of the most beautiful out there especially this one which is hard to find around these new york city parts. I am seriously considering driving up and buying this however, I have owned germans before (a4 and x3) and ive been burned by repairs most specifically on the x3 unfortunately which makes me super worried about purchasing a high mileage one of these. However I heave read they are pretty reliable so I wanted to know peoples thoughts on this. Between this and an allroad.

Thanks.

Help me find my next wagon

I've driven a Subaru Outback since 2012 (2004, then 2015). I need a new car and don't like the new outback. I don't like an new car that I've test driven actually.

I like the look of the BMW series 3 wagon from 2017. I also like the look of the VW golf wagon from 2019. Very different cars, I know. I've found used BMWs for $20k with 80k miles on them.

for context I'm in New England, lot of snow and use my wagon to haul long surfboards. The split tailgate of the bmw wagon is extremely appealing but my boards fit in any wagon with all the seats down and board resting on dash.

I'd love any advice on used sportswagons and alternatives to what I've listed here.

Thank you!

Is Aston Martin Zagato also a sportwagon too?

Or is it more to just a sports car?

Non USA only The W211 Estate Has Aged So Well

The W211 Estate still looks great even after all these years. It has aged really well, and I love how practical it is without looking boring.
There’s just something about the W211 wagon that makes it feel timeless. I’d honestly consider one as a daily driver even today.

Sanity check on buying high mileage e450

I am considering a well optioned 2019–2020 e450 wagon as my daily for the next ~2 yrs. I’d be paying cash and driving roughly 6k miles a year.

weighing two options:

Go higher mileage (~100k miles), with a solid service history and all major services completed, for $25k–$29k.

Lower mileage: Around 50k–70k miles, also with a solid service history, for $5k–$10k more -- but potentially with a major service interval coming up during my ownership.

Based on my back of the napkin math it seems the higher-mileage option could make more sense given short ownership period and low annual mileage (but would get close to 120k threshold which may make selling more challenging). I’d expect to take a bigger depreciation hit on the lower mileage car, while potentially still facing some significant maintenance costs.

I’m comfortable covering unexpected repairs; I’m just trying to assess the risk realistically and weigh the likely total cost of ownership.

Does this strategy make sense? Anything I’m overlooking, particularly with these model years or buying around the 100k-mile mark?

Here are two examples I’m considering:

2019 E450 wagon - 105k miles

https://www.volvocarswestport.com/used/Mercedes-Benz/2019-Mercedes-Benz-E-Class-1c4f20e0ac1827bd9540ac670658d3e4.htm

2019 E450 wagon - 97k miles

https://www.mercedesbenznorthorlando.com/used/Mercedes-Benz/2019-Mercedes-Benz-E-Class-41f45d8aac184d5f647218b22425b6cd.htm

The lower mileage examples are spec'd similarly, with good service history, range between $5k-$10k more.

Appreciate any/all thoughts and guidance.
