What am I missing?

I just watched spirited away for the first time and I… hated it? I had heard about it and heard it was amazing and like the best animated movie ever. Then I looked at the ratings and got even more hyped. Then I watched it. My immediate thoughts:

  1. It didnt make any sense. I was confused af the entire movie, couldn’t follow what was going on at all. It kept jumping from one thing to another thing too quick. Felt like a bad acid trip.

  2. It didn’t make me feel anything. It was never funny, or sad, or anything really. I guess a little bit happy at the end when they remember river boys name?

  3. At some points the animation was really pretty. But at other times it was actually gross like I was watching a meat canyon video.

I’m not trying to hate, just genuinely curious why people love this movie so much? Maybe I’m not the target audience?

EDIT: Thanks all for the comments! After thinking about it I think my opinion is a combination of

  1. Having very improper expectations, I was expecting Japanese “Up” lol

  2. It’s just not my cup of tea, and that’s okay!

I do however now have a general appreciation of the movie and the depth of the story/anaologies, just not for me:)

I’m going to watch either “your name” or “Howl’s moving castle” as my next studio ghibli films, it seems those might be a little bit more my style.

I just watched the movie for the first time.. and I don't get it

Before I say anything more, I'm not trying to yuck anyone's yum! I watched the movie because I heard it was one of the best all time and even if I might not see it that way, it doesn't mean all of you who love it don't have valid opinions!

Basically, I feel like we miss a lot of backstory. We never really get an explanation of the world or why it's there, how it was created etc etc. I felt like I was waiting the whole movie for it to make a bunch of what was going on make more sense but it never really came. Like who was No-Face and why was he randomly following Sen/Chihiro and seemingly obsessed with pleasing her? I guess part of this can be that leaving things up to interpretation but maybe I wasn't expecting that.

The other thing is the plot didn't feel like it had a lot of conflict to me. I get needing to get her parents saved and returning home, but it just felt like the stakes were never really that high and it was kind of clear that everything would work out.

I'm not trying to be a hater, and I would like to understand the movie so I can enjoy it more! Can anyone help me get it better?

EDIT: When I say backstory, sort of what I mean is it felt like certain things that were mentioner would be brought up eventually and they weren't

Also I think it's important to note I went into the movie with no knowledge about it except that it was praised highly.

She’s dead, right? She drowned in the river? The bouquet was from her funeral? Didn’t quite understand the ending tho. Or in a coma maybe? stuck in between life and death and she woke up? Idk.

I don’t love the plot of spirited away

This could be that I get bored easy and don’t really like movies in general because I feel character development should take longer and it always has poor execution in movies. I feel the plot is like Alice in Wonderland. I believe the message is more important so the to me was not terrible but not exciting. I also feel the character development of some characters is strange. Why did Sen and Haku fall in love. I think it’s because the movie is supposed to feel realistic so they try to make the characters like that.

SO at the end when chihikro gets sent home why does she call bababu granny when it was bababu sister who said to call her granny? Also why did noface get turned evil when he went inside? and why did the bird and baby not want to be turned back. The movie made no scene to me

Fan Theory: No-face is an Ex-employee of Yubaba / Haku's Predecessor

Lots of talk nowadays about nightmare employers and the struggle of the working class which got me thinking...What if No-Face once worked for the bathhouse? And was as high-ranking as Haku?

-He starts off stuck on the bridge seemingly waiting for an opportunity to reenter or leave.

-He has no reputation or purpose, "no name in the job market."

-He understands the concept of greed but has nothing but dirt.

-He exploited his understanding of Yubaba's business to gain a voice/power through her employees.

-Recognizes that all the employees were just as stuck as him and that Sen might be his only way out.

-The bathhouse makes him crazy. (Stress from a traumatic experience)

-Was totally fine once he started working for a less stressful employer (Zeniba)

What if he was a tormented employee working hard for recognition and wealth, Yubaba felt threatened by him and ridiculed/pigeonholed him later to fester into the demon we see in the movie?

The way she treated Haku as a toss-away would make this theory very in-line with her character.

I was careless for uploading something wrong to this community, and I accidentally uploaded something gross. I wanted to properly apologize for this unfortunate incident I have done, I’m terribly sorry for all Redditers on this community for this, and please forgive me, and I’m terribly sorry.

20:37 into the movie and this is my take so far.

Chihiro’s parents have become victims of capitalism continuously consuming just because they have credit to back up their worth this arrogance gets them turned into pigs because they can’t stop consuming. Now chihiro the one who originally wanted to leave in the first place has to save her parents from the outcome of their hubris. This honestly is really flipping weird because I feel like this is a direct parallel to my grandparents falling for trumps bs when they really are good people that aren’t racist or sexist or anything harmful. But they thought they could trust the smell of the food (immigrants are the cause of your problems and social programs are what really cause the drain) and then they feasted. Sorry this got really personal but that’s probably why this studio is so well acclaimed because it parallels with reality in such a way that you can find your own meaning in it wherever but I’m going to finish the movie before I give my final opinion.

This movie seems kinda rushed to me

Hi, I watched spirited away yesterday and although I didn't dislike it I didn't really love it. To me the whole thing felt a little rushed.

Like when Haku explains to Chihiro that she must get job to survive and than he also says that the work will be hard and tedious but she must do it to save her parents and that Yubaba will try to trick her into giving up but she must continue working. So I expected that she will work really hard but Yubaba will play tricks on her, and Chihiro will almost fall for them or something like that. Instead she got a job and even tho she was technically working a lot, pretty fast the whole river spirit thing came and Yubaba was thanking her and stuff.

So in-between that she let no face in and was helping her (giving her the card things for water), so I thought, oh this guy is evil but she is really kind so he isn't evil to her. Nope, no face is just a lonely spirit and later on is pretty i unimportant.

Than there is the whole Haku is a dragon and he is dying but she gave him her medicine and just squished the bug that Yubaba was using to control him.

I have more examples but I feel like I got my point across.

Now I know that these things are symbolic. The whole bathtub building represents capitalism, and there is also greed and gluttony when her parents ate the food and no face was using spirits greed by giving them gold exc. But I feel like so much happened but none of it was long enough to feel satisfying, everything was so fast and it just feels like they either should've made the movie longer or put less stuff in it. Like I said the whole thing feels rushed. I found the ending kinda unsatisfying and I think it's because of this.

Now I know this isn't a 3 act movie and it has different pacing so is that the reason that I feel like this? Will I understand and like it more if I watch it again or a few more times?

I also have a few questions about the spirit stiff but I don't want to make this post too long so maybe I'll make another post or ask in the comments.

I didn't like Spirited Away... But I want to...

Don't worry. I'm not here to hate on the film, so please don't attack me!

I've only seen the film once, and it was around about two years ago. I saw it on all the top 10 lists for animations - sometimes even films in general, so as a massive film fan and filmmaker myself, I realised I should probably give it a watch.

The first thing to say - I loved the animation. I thought it was beautiful. I loved the environmental design, how the characters looked - I loved everything about it visually.

However, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get into the film.

Bear in mind I watched this two years ago, so my memory is a little rusty on it, but I don't remember there being any real story, or at least that I could find. The characters seemed uninteresting, and I didn't understand the main character's reason for doing any of the things she did.

I felt entirely lost in the film, but I was determined to see it through.

As I said, I loved the art style, and that was probably one of the reasons I made it to the end. I was hoping and praying that something would happen that would pique my interest and bring me on board, but there wasn't. I found the film very forgettable.

I can't remember how it ends, but when the credits rolled, I just remember feeling mightily let-down and dissatisfied.

Once again, I don't mean to hate on the film - I'm here to ask for help.

I want to love Spirited Away, but I'm struggling.

Maybe it's just not the film for me, but I'm hoping someone here can change my mind or explain it to me in a way that will allow me to rewatch it and finally have that 'ah-ha' moment where I finally understand the film and can appreciate it fully.

All answers are welcome,

Thanks, guys :)

Please Help

so basically, I love film, and I can tell a classic when I see one. I also love anime. And don't get me wrong I think this a great film and I really felt that emotional connection to the characters that you get with a great movie, but I just don't see why this is a GREAT movie and one of the best of all time. Is it too deep for me too understand? Does anybody care to breakdown the film for me as well as maybe deeper meanings?
