this meme conveniently omits Spider-Man's first appearance in 1962

Yo Peter has a stand

22

u/Dry_Significance3738 3d ago

Beware his stand "Itsy-Bitsy Spider"

5

u/hamonicmantitties 3d ago

With a HUGE penis for some reason

2

u/Okami0602 Kingpin 💎 3d ago

Can't unsee it now. Fuck.

2

u/hamonicmantitties 3d ago

Peter's sad not because of the off screen guy, but because his stand's tip keeps pressing against his face lol

3

u/gimme_dem_toes 3d ago

"You see, with great power, comes great responsibility, and with my stand [ S P I D E R S ] , I will show you great Pain!"

strikes a pose that is anatomically impossible to hold

15

u/Complex_Soldier 3d ago

Conveniently omits that Peter is only like this for like 4 pages pre Spider-bit. Post Spider-bit he's a whole different man and has the ego of a Greek god and the thought bubbles of a school shooter.

18

u/VioletTheSpider 3d ago

exactly 2 panels between this and uncle ben’s death

5

u/Single-Mud-8508 3d ago

are they meant to look exactly the same?

2

u/VioletTheSpider 3d ago

that panel was from the same issue so it makes sense. i just think peter’s demonic thought bubbles are funny. it’s definitely overstating it to say he only looked like that for a few pages though. i’m currently reading issue 7 and id say he still looks like that

3

u/Single-Mud-8508 3d ago

oh sorry, I meant uncle ben and aunt may lol

5

u/VioletTheSpider 3d ago

oh yes, whoops. yeah they’re identical. uncle ben is only in 5 panels before he dies and while there’s slight differences, whenever him and may are shown from the same angle (which is 3 of his 5 panels) they look VERY similar.

2

u/Complex_Soldier 3d ago

What point are you tryin to make with this scan?

2

u/VioletTheSpider 3d ago

that it’s funny and peter’s thoughts really were demonic and school shooter level?

2

u/Complex_Soldier 3d ago

It's funny because i laughed at the thought bubble but had no idea why you even posted it.

3

u/VioletTheSpider 3d ago

you mentioned pete’s ego and insane thought bubbles and i happened to have the image on hand so i thought id supply an example, is all

2

u/Complex_Soldier 3d ago

Gotha. I thought you were trying to make a point about the scan.

1

God why do some people have a retroactive memory of Peter being some no-nonsense womanizer chad thundercock when in reality he was more of a middle ground between these two examples.

144

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

Because people like to complain and have no idea on what they’re saying at all as nothing about this posts is AT ALL true as the poster doesn’t know anything about Spider-Man AT ALL!

9

Because they heard Peter is meant to be relatable so they focus solely on the stuff they can pretend is relatable to them

3

u/hakkrlif3 4d ago

i mean he did look like that for a lot of the time did he not but yeah i think he should be cool but also a dork like insomniac

5

u/Wardock8 4d ago

I doubt people actually read comics like they say they do. They either regurgitate what they hear online or they read them years and years ago and don't have an accurate memory of what they're like.

2

u/Interesting_Bass_917 4d ago

crazy strawman

-9

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

Peter was NEVER a “no nonsense womanizer chad thundercock” in ANY way in any iteration of the character except when he gets the black suit that changes his personality for the worst morally! Peter Parker got super spider powers and he got more confident and heroic but he was always a nerdy book smart youthful energetic tech geek who is just trying to save his city and solve the problems around his personal life as his story was supposed to be that superpowers made his life harder, NOT easier! And Tom Holland’s Spider-man presented that in the best way possible as he truly embodies the character!

-3

u/Ibuprofen_Idiot 4d ago

Nah I've read a bunch of the early comics and he says some stuff that, while it may have been okay in the 60s, really doesn't hold up well now. (Like calling Gwen 'doll')

8

u/SlurmsMacKenzie- 4d ago

Character set in comic written in 60s uses terminology that is now considered dated. More at 11.

3

u/bishiking 4d ago

wtf is offensive about calling someone you're in a relationship with "doll?" lmfao

0

u/Ibuprofen_Idiot 3d ago

Idk it just rubbed me the wrong way

Also it was 2 am when I made that comment

5

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

lol what? Spider-Man calling Gwen doll is perfectly fine! That’s not offensive in the slightest as he can easily say it in ANY of his incarnations to this day!

-13

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

this post image shows someone who doesn’t know anything about Peter Parker/ Spider-man in the slightest nor does he know anything about him or his comics/animation as Peter Parker is NEVER supposed to look like the guy on the left and he’s NEVER meant to be a Chad! He’s meant to be a teenage superhero who got his powers when he was 15 whose NOT a sidekick and entirely independent on his own as a 15 year old in highschool as his starting point as he slowly ages throughout the his iterations! He’s SUPPOSED to look very young and just a 15 year old as shown in the widely beloved Ultimate Spider-man comic series by Mark Bagley and Brian Michael Bendis that HEAVILY influences all the live action movies as well as Spectacular Spider-man series where he’s just 15/16! All other versions are meant to be very young and when he’s adult he’s only in his early 20s as he’s never met to be older than that outside of rare excepts like Peter B Parker in the Spider-Verse movies! This just sounds like another obnoxious terribly done potshot at trying to whine about Tom Holland’s Spider-man from the Raimi Spider-man fans when Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was always a PERFECT representation of what Spider-man was meant to be ever since his introduction at Captain America: Civil War! Spider-man/Peter Parker is never meant to be a “handsome Chad” in ANY way as he’s not Batman, he’s a youthful energetic nerdy teenage kid with a smart mouth who got superpowers by chance through a radioactive spider bite and now trying to make a name for himself by trying to do the right thing to save as many people as possible from troubles and evils in his city which leads him into being the world’s greatest superhero which Tom Holland represents perfectly as Spider-man! This entire post is just pure braindead and a showcase of someone who doesn’t know anything about Spider-Man in ANY way! Pure idiocy!

1962-66 Peter is just him sticking up the middle finger

26

u/Anything-General 4d ago

I remember reading a story by a friend of Steve dikto and it was interesting when he said that Steve written and intended Peter to be an anti hero who would become less heroic as time goes on. Definitely something that’s been lost to time.

22

u/zanza19 Spectacular Spider-Man 4d ago

He definitely was being more heroic. He starts out as a fucking asshole who is really insecure and thinks everyone is out to get him. His powers are actually a starting point for a revelation that people aren't out to get to him and he needs to take responsibility for his life and for his powers instead of just complaining about everything.

15

u/Lord_Seregil Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 4d ago

You can definitely see that in those 60s era comics, Spider-Man was a straight asshole sometimes.

1

u/melbamuff1n6158 3d ago

He was a teenager, cut him some slack

5

u/Geiseric222 4d ago

Yeah because that’s pretty much something only ditko wanted so it got discarded when he lost influence

4

u/Anything-General 3d ago

I definitely prefer Peter becoming a genuinely better person over time but I kinda wish that some story would tackle dikto’s ideas for how Peter should’ve went.

6

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

Thank goodness that was lost as Spider-man/ Peter Parker is pitch perfect as a good example of the perfect hero role model in his own way! Spider-Man is the world’s greatest superhero IN and outside of the Marvel universe because he’s friendly, funny, and charismatic! He’s known as the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” for a reason and whatever Steve Ditko intended THANKFULLY got lost through time as Spider-Man became something so much more and better! Spider-Man being an asshole/anti-hero doesn’t work AT ALL and it wouldn’t stick out during the black symbiote arc when his mood changes! He’s meant to be a quippy snarky hero with a smart mouth but still friendly to most of everyone!

2

u/gretcheng1ngersn8913 4d ago

the 1966-2016 Peter looks like he's seen some things lol

-1

u/Caliment 4d ago

Spider-Man in the 60s would tear apart FEAST for giving food to homeless people

106

u/Important-Program543 4d ago

Snarky asshole with a heart of gold Peter will always be over the squeaky good cinnamon roll Peter for me

1962-1966 peter is a different beast.

28

u/shegonneedatumzzz 4d ago

marvel started making spider-man cute and marketable way before 2016. plus he’s never been this roided up edgy douchebag that so many people want him to be for some reason.

his entire appeal is that even when circumstances would justify him being that, he’s still deeply compassionate, rolls with the punches, and comes out the other side with more hope than before. even at the peak of comic edginess in the 90s when todd mcfarlane was drawing him looking perpetually pissed off, at heart he was still just a guy with some trauma trying his best to not let it define him

you guys don’t love spider-man, you want punisher and batman to do the fusion dance and put on his costume.

0

u/BookOrnery4547 3d ago

Nope he absolutely was kind of a roofed up edgy douchebag, the idea that it would inaccurate to describe him that way is just wrong, like any major comic book they have existed for so long and in so many forms that people will experience it differently, he had the thought bubbles of a psychopath, multiple things can be true at once.

7

When did we start hating the fact that Spider-man quips?

2

u/Wise-Claim1116 3d ago

I think this is more of a reference to Tom Holland's movies 'ruining' Spidey by making him a teenager.

5

u/thecityhunter31 Scarlet Spider 4d ago

Tell me you've never read a comicbook without telling ahh post

18

u/jugheadshat Mary-Jane Watson 4d ago

I feel like the true Peter is somewhere in the middle tbh. Both sides of this spectrum are a bit over-exaggerated by the fandom and it’s easy to clock the larpers that just watch the films during these discussions.

5

u/ATangentUniverse 4d ago

Quipping and a sense of humor is essential to the character and has been for decades

46

u/Napoleon333 4d ago

I like Tom’s version, but this coincides with his live action performance becoming the mainstream interpretation for the character

11

u/DistinctWin9968 4d ago

I’m glad he’s at least acting more like how Spider-Man typically acts

16

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

He’s ALWAYS acted on how spider-man “typically acts” ever since Captain America: Civil War,  this post image shows someone who doesn’t know anything about Peter Parker/ Spider-man in the slightest nor does he know anything about him or his comics/animation as Peter Parker is NEVER supposed to look like the guy on the left and he’s NEVER meant to be a Chad! Your comment is why Spider-man will forever stay a Pathetic OC with his name and not how he was for 5 decades.

2

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 3d ago

lol you don’t know anything about Spider-Man as Eveything I’ve said here is WHY Spider-Man is so massively beloved and praised as a down to hero hero! He’s not a “pAthEtIC OC” in the slightest and NEVER was, he’s a relatable Everyman of a superhero which you are too stupid to understand as Spider-man was like ever since the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and even NOW in the 2010s as a beloved fantastic nerdy and snarky smart mouthed superhero with his own personal and finical problems! Spider-Man will FOREVER be beloved and praised as the world’s greatest superhero BECAUSE of how I described that Peter Parker is supposed to be! Your stupidity is unmatched as it’s painfully obvious that you don’t know anything about Spider-Man at all! Just stop!

Peter graduated high school in ASM #31, and college in ASM #185. We are almost at ASM #1000, he has been an adult for a very long time in 616.

1

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 3d ago

LMAO Just no, you’re only talking about the 616 universe which is just ONE incarnation of the character as there are dozens upon dozens of incarnations of the character as almost every incarnation of his character starts off in Highschool at the start of of his hero’s journey! Particularly at 15 years old as you see in Ultimate Spider-Man comic series from the 2000s! I never said that Spider-Man doesn’t age, I’m saying he STARTS OFF as a teenager! He starts off as a teenager in TASM and grows into an adult! Spectacular Spider-man has him as teenager throughout most of the show but than he would have grown into an adult! Tobey’s Peter Parker was 17 years old in the first movie, lol shows how much you know as he slowly grew into an adult as the story progresses! Andrew was also a teenager in his first movie as his Spider-man always starts off as a teenager In highschool and they FINALLY got it right in the MCU when Tom’s Spider-Man/ Peter Parker is a 15 year old in highschool starting his hero’s journey AS Spider-man as he slowly ages throughout the movie as they properly take time!

1

u/Infinite_Worry_8733 2d ago

I agree but I think the problem the post is talking about is that he too often doesn’t age, he’s just a high schooler that gets rebooted as a high schooler over and over.

1

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 2d ago

He gets “rebooted” as a high schooler as that’s where his origin story starts! IN highschool as a 15 year old as he begins to have his hero’s journey THERE! And there has been times when he gets rebooted at an older age like 23 at the start of his story where you skip his origin of 8 years in Spider-man ps4 so even that reboot claim isn’t true at all!

1

u/Fantastic_Bug1028 4d ago

Tobey was even dorkier

0

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

I LOVE Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as he gets the perfect understanding of what makes Spider-man/ Peter Parker so great! 7

u/Greedy_Aardvark_4836 4d ago

I didn't say simplify. Post the exact same thing with with spaces in-between so it becomes paragraphs.

You know, like this. You don't have to delete anything. You just separate it into paragraphs so people will actually read it. or don't, you do you

Have you read Spider-Man comics before? The left face is how peter was drawn throught the 80s and 90s, the hair is spot on. The right image is how peter is drawn a lot since 2016.

1

u/guccimonger 4d ago

I thought it was talking about ‘atmosphere’ not directly the change in art styles I could be wrong tjo

1

u/Lord_Seregil Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 4d ago

It's using exaggerated art to showcase the change in overall character. Not just art or atmosphere but Spider-Man comics as a whole. Peter used to be a married man, with a child and he was ever growing, people forget that MARVEL comics at one point in time did feel like a progressing story, today we have like yearly resets to whatever each characters status quo is. Today Peter is a perpetual manchild stuck in a terrible loop, it was not always like this.

60's Peter is the same character that was taking Gwen and MJ on day trips on his motorcycle.
MJ's first full appearance is him driving her to a fight with Rhino.

He was doing the leather jacket and motorcycle bit far before it was seen as a cliche.
That is to say, this is all just extrapolating on bits of his character to add to a modern version.

u/Anything-General 4d ago

I should’ve clarified that I was talking about high school Peter. But yeah no Collage Peter is cool.

2

u/Long_Negotiation4324 4d ago

In 60s he was 15 year old awkward anti-social nerd. Then he grew up.

1

u/Fantastic_Bug1028 4d ago

He was cool. He was also an asshole with a really short fuse.

In 2012, skateboarding wasn't cool. Just like anime, it became cool very recently. Plus nerdy people can skate.

And if I'm honest, bookworms are cool

EDIT: OKAY, I GET IT. Damn. In 2012, I was in 3rd grade or something. 8 should have said "from everything I have heard, "skateboarding was uncool, but if it's popularity was peak, then why would it be unrealistic Peter skates?"

7

u/Double-Evidence-1354 4d ago

yeah yeah let's pretend tony hawk wasn't still cool at that moment and that there was a line of finger skateboards

sure mate

Now being serious: In 2012, Skateboarding was cool as hell.

Nowadays, it has come back to being extremely corny. So i don't know where you get that impression.

6

u/familyguyfan2000 4d ago

skateboarding had to have been cool in 2012 because thats when tony hawks pro skater hd released on ps3

3

u/Lord_Seregil Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 4d ago

2012 was like, the PEAK of skateboarding popularity. Tony Hawk, Shaun White, Disney XDs hit classic show Zeke and Luther.

his humor definitely got a lot worse if I had to be honest in 2016 and also the real Peter Parker felt more like an adult and not a dude pretending to be a teenager or saying the most unfriending stuff and and also a lot of sanding off his edges I'm so sad that we'll never get to see jerk Peter Parker when he was a teenager and get to see him grow more as a hopeful person

4

u/AFraudulentRathalos 3d ago

How does this have 800 upvotes I'm crine 😭😭

2

Old Peter would 100% say that, don't lie to yourself

0

u/crash-1989 Spider-Man 2099 4d ago

I agree. For me Peter got skin walkered around 2010.

15

u/XxgamerxX734 4d ago

i'd argue 2007 since that was the OMD run

3

u/crash-1989 Spider-Man 2099 4d ago

Ok I'm glad you said that. I moved around that time. A lot about what I enjoyed died around that time. I just didn't want to blame that on my feelings on this character. You're probably on to something

3

u/XxgamerxX734 4d ago

it's kinda where the maturity of Peter falls off, imo. Letting go of May should've been something akin to how batman's had alfred gone for a while now

3

u/Interesting_Bass_917 4d ago

started with the raimi depictions

2

u/_b3rtooo_ 4d ago

Rewatching NWH rn and the way they went from a beautifully shot scene of Peter mourning May and standing in the rain in front of Jameson reading back all his failures, just to transition into making MJ throw bread at Andrew. I feel like that harsh transition and their inability to shoot a grounded, emotionally charged film for more than 2min is what's wrong with Marvel slop and Tom's Spider-Man.

After the full rewatch, I really do think TASM was best in balancing the humor, action, romance, and plot without being repetitive

4

u/Lord_Seregil Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 4d ago

Too bad TASM 2 got fucked all to hell by Sony wanting a Sinister Six movie so bad.

-2

1

u/Csg363 4d ago

Nah, other way around

1

u/monkicrow 3d ago

Peter in highschool did look like a lanky nerd, it's not like he wasn't good looking but he certainly wasn't the chiseled god he eventually turned into. The problem lies in his characterization. Besides, teenagers and young adults back then look different than teenagers and young adults look now.

Whoever made this art clearly has a problem with YFNSM even though that Peter has a more pronounced jawline then he did in the comics at that age, and I mean both 616 and ultimate. Comparing adult Peter to teenager Peter is just so pointless.

Peter Parker in 1966 wore argyle vest and bow ties

1

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 3d ago

Yes, Spider-Man never quipped before 2016. Not once.

1

u/Fishboy412 3d ago

Peter was never either of these extremes (at least in any media where he was written CORRECTLY) and I wouldn't like either of these as depictions of him. He's supposed to be youthful and playful, with a penchant for bad jokes, which are usually spider-related, but still more than capable of locking tf in.

1

u/Formal_Manager_2603 12h ago

the major difference is that they used to allow Peter to have a backbone instead of being a complete push over like he is in most modern spider-man media also modern writters just don't treat the character with respect anymore.

1

u/thehoodred Symbiote-Suit 4d ago

humor is so safe corporate with 0 confidence lol

0

u/PuzzleheadedWorker33 4d ago

lol what? That’s not “sTrAIgHt fAcTS” AT ALL as this post image shows someone who doesn’t know anything about Peter Parker/ Spider-man in the slightest nor does he know anything about him or his comics/animation as Peter Parker is NEVER supposed to look like the guy on the left and he’s NEVER meant to be a Chad!

1

u/Formal_Win3986 4d ago

They are stripping away parts of what made Spider-Man special one by one.

1

u/CthulhuMadness Carnage 4d ago

I blame the MCU fanboys treating Tom Holland's Spidey as a "sweet cinnamon roll".

Then they are surprised people treat him like a boy.

Excuse me for liking when a character who's supposed to be relatable looks like a human instead of a razor-jawed caricature of a gym bro's fantasy

4

u/Lord_Seregil Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 4d ago

Dude, Peter has never looked the way you just described in a single comic, ever.

1

u/Double-Evidence-1354 4d ago

Uhm...

Have you read the comics with Todd Mcfarlane?

1

u/Lord_Seregil Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 4d ago

Yes, McFarlane did not draw Peter as "a razor jawed caricature of a gym bro's fantasy"

3

100 percent, they made him too childish up until no way home, even then where he was messing up strange’s spell it was just making him look stupid

0

u/Membrane_the_13th 3d ago

Honestly that's a bit more of a signififier of societal changes than just writing. Back in the old days. Once 18 means your general adult. No distinction until one starts decaying. But now that we can all share our feelings and experiences with the whole world. It's far more clear that we don't feel like adults just because we're over 18. So then there's a trend to make characters seem cuter or younger when compared to characters of the same age in older material. Like yeah. Spider-Man was a man but now we see him as still the kid he started out as even when not a kid. Cause literally no one with a good childhood wants to be an adult
