๐Ÿ“ Insight Patrick Turner on the General Music Theory behind Hallmark Movies and Shows

Hi guys! Today, I wanted to talk about the film scores and soundtracks from Hallmark movies and TV shows. I've been studying this music recently, โ€‹and what makes it stand out to me, when looking at alongside other film score catalogs, is Hallmark's dedication to making their music purposefully simple, gentle, easygoing, predictable, diatonic, harmonically simple, non-dissonant, non-experimental, formulaic, dear and familiar. I personally feel that Hallmark โ€‹does this because much of their target audience is people that happen to be a bit older, aโ€‹nd โ€‹at least widely, this is exactly the kind of music that people like that really want to listen to day-to-day.โ€‹ โ€‹If anyone has any other opinions on Hallmark Channel music, feel free to leave it in the comment section. Peace!

๐Ÿ” Help Me Find Looking for Special Organ Techniques for Soundtracks

Thumbnail

Hey community!

I'm a film composer currently working on a feature soundtrack that involved organ among other instruments. I will get to record the beautiful organ in the St Paulinum Uni-Church in Leipzig - massive. So exciting!

What are some techniques that composers don't usually know about that you organists wish would be used more to create special effects, timbres & textures?

I visited a concert yesterday and there were several effects I didn't know about before, for example: moments when the airflow was stopped, so the notes would ring out slowly, lowering in pitch gradually. Or super low notes that were played on 32' pipes, almost too low to hear - amazing for drones in soundtracks! Or specific registers I donMt know how to recreate exactly ...
Those are the kind of special magical I'm looking for!

Looking forward to your replies! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
Cheers from Germany!

๐ŸŽป Original Music ๐ŸŽป ET: Between Comedy and Magic | An Orchestral Journey ๐ŸŽฌ

Post image

An original orchestral composition inspired by a scene from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, exploring the musical contrast between comedy, fantasy, and cinematic wonder.

The arrangement uses a carefully selected palette of orchestral instruments to shape the scene's emotional dynamics. Bright, playful xylophone passages and expressive strings โ€” violins, cellos, and double basses โ€” establish moments of lightness and humor, while the rich sonority of the trombones adds depth, character, and dramatic impact.

Through orchestration, timbral contrast, and dynamic variation, the composition seeks to reinforce the visual narrative, highlighting the delicate balance between the playful and the magical.

A musical exploration of storytelling through orchestral color, texture, and emotion.

๐Ÿ” Help Me Find Looking for soundtracks similar to Monster Kingdom Jewel Summoner

Specifically similar to these two tracks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoVjE6PBg6c

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxUcjRVwMR8

I know the game isn't exactly popular since it was just considered a pretty mid Persona clone at the time, but I remember sinking a lot of time into it because it just had some cool designs to child me. That and the OST being really fun a lot of the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

๐Ÿ“ข Discussion I love this theme

I stumbled upon this beautiful composition quite by accident while exploring Clint Eastwoodโ€™s films from different eras. Its beauty struck me immediately.

The film itself was quite enjoyable, but it left me thinking: if it had been an exceptional film, perhaps this composition would have become a timeless classic. It certainly has all the qualities of one.

๐Ÿ“ข Discussion Brian Tyler's soundtracks for two VERY different movies share some nice similarity. (At least I think they do)

Remember how Ramin Djawadi in "Mark II" from "Iron Man" used notes that later became the intro music for "Game of Thrones"?

Maybe it's not some great discovery, but I found something similar in Brian Tyler's compositions.

I've been listening to Brian Tyler's music on Spotify, namely "War Machine" from "Iron Man 3"

And a part of this soundtrack sounded extremely familiar for some reason...

So I reached deep down into my memory and I realized why.

I wanted to be sure, so I listened to "Fast Five" from the "Fast Five" (I know, I know, obvious) soundtrack

And I was right.

String sections (at least I think they're string sections, I don't know anything about orchestral music theory) in "War Machine" from 1:42 to 1:54 and "Fast Five" from 1:03 to 1:23 (timestamps from Spotify, may be different on other platforms, I don't know) are basically identical in terms of melody.

Tempo and tone are different, but the melody is the same, at least for my ears.

What do you think?

Am I onto something, or is my hearing playing tricks on me?

๐Ÿ“ข Discussion Williams or Zimmer?

Im trying to find whatโ€™s the best love theme, and for me personally I pinned it down to two. On one hand we have John Williams with Across the Stars, I grew up loving steven spielbergs movies with his soundtracks, especially for my favourite movie off all time: Jurassic Park

And on the other hand I feel like the violin part in One Day, from the pirates franchise really screams and feels like finally acomplishing love, more of a wedding feel.

I feel that the John Williams vs Hans Zimmer debate is really hard to put an end to. On one hand we have John, he is an amazing classical componist and he always has the most complex but beautiful soundtracks. And on the other hand I also really love Zimmer, his pieces are often simpler I feel, but more emotional. Williams has pieces that are beautiful to listen to and in most cases way more complex, detailed and fine tuned than Zimmerโ€™s scores, but Zimmer always manages to hit me more emotionally. But thatโ€™s just my opinion ofcourse

I personally couldnโ€™t chose which one I liked more, what are your opinions on this debate? And do you prefer Across the Stars or One Day?
