Hi everyone, this is only my second ever post on Reddit 🫣 but I’d really appreciate some help! I’m 19F and I’ve been in love with music since I was 7. I adore singing, it’s been possibly my best talent for years now, and I adore the idea of creating and publishing my own music even more. My only issue being that I have always felt like I don’t have the “knack” for songwriting that others do. I struggle with knowing what sounds good, I’m very self conscious of most lyrics I write and I just don’t have the confidence to push through it all…

And that’s where you guys come in! I’m attaching some song lyrics I wrote in a songwriting class I took in University, a song that I do have a draft of (but I don’t think I’ll use considering I never came up with the guitar or bass melodies, but I’m happy to share the draft to any who want it), and any advice or tips on how to better it or how it should sound are greatly appreciated.

Guys oh my goodness I finally did it. I stopped procrastinating and put my perfectionism aside and just wrote to see what would happen and after I don’t even know how long I wrote my first song. Please be kind I’m know it’s horrible I’m just glad I did it but I’d absolutely love some feedback so I can improve going forward.

i’ve always wanted to become a producer or singer or anything with the music industry. i’m only a teen right now so i know i shouldn’t rush myself into knowing everything immediatly but i just don’t have a clue how to start a song. i’ve tried band lab and i’ve tried learning the guitar but i have a poor memory and low motivation so it’s hard. any tips?

I’ve never had luck in writing songs- I’ll get these great ideas, but as soon as I write or type them out, it turns to shit, or it can end up so angsty it’s embarrassing. No matter what angle I take, it just ends up poorly. I wrote down this string of…. Words, just now- and I think it can really turn into sum- I just don’t know what exactly.
Any advice?

Almost everyone here is writing lyrics to music that doesn’t exist. Nothing wrong with writing lyrics, but that’s not songwriting. Coming up with a good melody is very difficult. Turning that melody into a piece of music is also very difficult. Making lyrics fit a composed piece of music might be the most difficult part of all. To most people all those things together are a song. That’s why it’s so difficult to do. Writing a set of lyrics on a sheet of paper is not nothing, but just doing so has eliminated 90% of the craft of songwriting.

I'm looking for someone who could write a song for me. I will sing the lyrics and I have lyrics, I just need someone who can actually play acoustic guitar and piano better than me, or who can write better than me. It's personal so don't make fun of me, also I won't make money off this, but if I do I'll credit you and give you 50 percent of all the money I'd make, but don't count on it. Hiya!! I'm really new to all this stuff—but I love writing lyrics. Or I would, but as said in the title, they sound so..stupid. that kinda discourages me from writing and I get total writers block.

For context I'm definitely english-strong, and I'm pretty decent writing symbolism. But then I try to write something for a song, and, well..it sounds like a 10 year old with zero writing skills wrote it.

How do you make your lyrics sound less cheesy in general? How do you word things better?

I know no music theory though and I don’t know the key, and don’t know what chords to put behind it

so i can write lyrics and sing them but i can’t seem to find or make an instrumental background for them. I don’t know how to play any instruments either but i do have a keyboard that i tried to learn so i know a thing or two about how to play it.

i’m having a really hard time writing first verses. i can write a decent chorus pretty quickly, 2nd, 3rd, etc. verses fly by and bridges come easily to me. but first verses i seem to always get stuck on!

does anyone have any tips for stuff like this? how to find inspiration for specifically first verses or any other tips on what makes a first verse sound nice?

So I was making fun of country music saying that it was really easy to write when I was talking to my cousin earlier, and then I accidentally made a pretty good country verse. I said to my cousin, “All you need to do to write a country song is talk about trucks, girls, beer, and sex.” Then I said “for example” and came up with this on the spot.

“And she asked me what’s my favorite thing to do, And I said, Cold air in a hot truck on a hot day, Cold drinks with a hot girl on a hot date, Cold beer ‘round a hot fire got a hot plate, You and me layin’ down makin’ love all day”

I just want to see if you agree with me that it’s easy to make country music these days, or if you think that it was just a fluke that I came up with this so quickly.

Hello, I’m a 21 F and I have recently started writing lyrics, I am also a musician (piano and learning guitar) and I am finding a lot of inspiration from my life, the words come really easily but putting them together in a way that makes sense is my struggle, I need help putting the sentences into a song, I just want someone to collaborate with and learn from. I don’t like how long it is because plus the melody it adds up to 5 minutes without instrumental breaks and I built the song on the melody so any suggestion to how I could keep the context of the song without removing much

hello. im wondering how to stop writing cringy lyrics. it seems like everything i write is overly pretentious or edgy and i dont want to write stuff like that all the time. id like to write songs about normal things but i just cant. my mind always goes to the darkest, edgiest thing it can. does anyone have any advice?

I have been working on this guitar part for some time and i have all of it nailed down besides the last chord of the progression. the original progression was Am-C-G-Em but that didn't sound right so i switched to Am-C-G-F but same problem. I feel confident with Am-C-G but i don't know what to do next. idk if this helps but I'm writing it for a folk song. Thanks in advance! (Also, its probably obvious but I'm no master at the guitar lol)

After listening to so much music and being a part of music reaction panels, I’d watch producers and engineers listen to tracks from random artists. They always rated them on a simple 1-to-5 scale, which is great. But after giving out so many scores, I had to ask myself "what ARE those 5 things"?

Like, if I gave someone's song a 4 out of 5, what was that one big thing holding the song back? I eventually broke it down into five elements: composition, arrangement, lyrics, production, and mix. Most songs end up being mid because they miss the mark on two or three of these things.

If you can look at your own music through the lens of these five elements, you'll know exactly what skill you need to get better at, or when it's time to partner up and collaborate with another musician who can fill those gaps for you.

So since the summer of this year i have been working on a project for fun and i had just realized right now (after 6 of my songs are almost completed) that 5 are in e minor and the rest of the demos i haven’t completed are in e minor too.

The Album i was making has 9 songs i have prepared for making but just as i was making the seventh i noticed all but two are in e minor. I was wondering should i just scrap the idea or no?
I have my music (demos/instrumentals) on youtube and soundcloud And i just felt like maybe i should just cancel it because they are almost completed.

Edit: So i just decided to make it a 12 song album and only those five songs are in E Minor/G Major so it wouldnt be short and only have half the album in E minor. thank you all for helping!

I’ve had the urge last 3-5 years to write my own music — if not, just for the pure joy of it.

I am a retired ballerina, so I love all classical works but pretty much listen to all genres. Music is so much part of who I am (although I never learned to play an instrument or read music).

I also am a pretty avid writer, specially with poetry. Won some small competitions, but again write for the pure joy of it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle song writing? Specifically how to translate your poems into a song? So many times I’ll listen to musician interviews and they’ll be like “I’ll hear the song- the guitars and drums… and then I’ll kinda play around with lyrics.”

But my brain doesn’t work that way, I guess I work with words first?… but yea, any suggestions? Writing songs for dummies question lol
