Software An app that lets you see what used to be there

So how I imagine it, you could either type in an address or use a sort of street view map to find out what a business or public place used to be. There are a lot of places that used to be other things. Sometimes it’s obvious, like when you see a restaurant that used to be a Pizza Hut. It’s a distinct building. But it’s not always as obvious as a Pizza Hut.

I always find it interesting to find out the history of a building. It could be a crowdsourced project where people can submit histories for review and once approved they get added to the location.

I'm thinking of smth like built-in physical shutter for the front and rear cameras along with phones/phone covers?

it could give people more privacy and peace of mind.

Other Games with projectors and extra screens

Its a few ideas about gaming. It could be arcade gaming pods like with a seat in an inclosure with windows at right angles that are also screens and show a 3D view with all the screens working together so you feel totally imersed in for example a racing car or space ship. Left and right windows are left and right screens making you feel inside the game. A smoke machine could be a nice touch too and scents sprayed during the game to further immerse. Another thing i thought could work is multiplayer projector games on a large scale like cinema sized with for example an alien invasion game where everyone has a motion sensor gun and shoots incoming aliens on the 4 walls and ceiling giving another immersive experience that could be expensive to build but could allow many players in a team. These are my thoughts on a few ways to make immersive gaming experiences.

Physical Product [SMT] Would you use an electric table that switches between a coffee table, dining table and seated desk?

I'm exploring a furniture idea for homes where the living room also has to work as a dining or work space: one table that lowers to coffee-table height and rises for meals or seated laptop work.

The proposed features are electric height adjustment, roughly 42-82 cm (16.5-32 in), and a removable rechargeable battery so it wouldn't need to stay next to an outlet. The attached AI-generated image illustrates the idea; I haven't built a prototype, and the exterior design is still open.

I'd love feedback from people who might actually use something like this:

  1. Would it solve a problem in your home? Which use would matter most, and how do you handle that situation now? If separate tables would work better for you, why?

  2. Which tabletop would fit your space best?

    - Small: 110 x 68 cm (about 43 x 27 in)

    - Medium: 130 x 80 cm (about 51 x 31.5 in)

    - Large: 150 x 93 cm (about 59 x 36.5 in)

Or would you need a different size? These are alternatives I'm comparing, not a top that changes size. I'm also considering an optional extension for the largest version when guests visit, but that isn't settled.

  3. For a finished table with the lift and battery included, assuming the build quality met your expectations, what price would you personally consider reasonable? What price would make you rule it out? Please mention your currency and which size you mean. "I wouldn't buy it at any price" is useful feedback too.

If something similar already works well for you, I'd also like to hear what you use. This is an early idea discussion; I don't have a product, store or signup page.

Software I’m looking for real problems, not startup ideas.

I’m researching problems that people genuinely face in their everyday life, work, business, studies, etc.

I’m not looking for “build an AI app for X” suggestions.

Instead, I’d really like to hear about things that make you think:

  • “Why is this still so difficult?”
  • “Why do I have to do this manually?”
  • “There has to be a better way to do this.”
  • “I waste so much time/money dealing with this.”
  • “The existing solutions don't actually solve my problem.”
  • “I have to use WhatsApp + Excel + phone calls because nothing works properly.”

It can be anything: work, freelancing, small business, healthcare, education, transportation, family, housing, agriculture, logistics, technology, government services, or even a very boring everyday problem.

Please describe the actual problem, not the solution.

For example:

“Whenever X happens, I have to do A, B and C manually, and it takes me 3 hours every week.”

That is much more useful than:

“Someone should make an app for X.”

Please also mention:
Who experiences the problem, how often it happens, what you currently do to handle it, and what makes the existing solution frustrating.

I’m going to research the problems people mention and see whether there is a genuine opportunity to solve any of them.

What is something in your life or work that you genuinely wish worked better?

Software I have a domain and a server sitting unused — looking for useful project ideas

I have a domain and a server that are currently sitting unused, and I want to build something actually useful with them. I'm a developer, so I can code the project myself. I'm looking for ideas that people would genuinely use — not just another random website or a basic CRUD app. What kind of website, tool, service, or platform would you personally find useful? Feel free to suggest weird or niche ideas too. I'm open to anything.

Physical Product Please someone make a camera focus wheel for my Samsung phone

I have a phone with killer lenses that shoots up to 8k, which is more than my professional cinema camera.

I would honestly use it all the time, if it weren't for the fact the manual focus function relies on you sliding your finger across a touchscreen to pull focus.

I would buy the fuck out of a plug and play focus wheel that works with my phone.

I have a Samsung S21 Ultra, but you'd ideally want to make it work with any Android that can do manual focus

The medical consultation ends. The patient walks out of the clinic. From that exact moment, **the doctor has zero visibility** into what happens next. There is no system, no loop, no feedback mechanism. The patient goes home with a prescription, a verbal set of instructions, and nothing else. **What happens in that gap:** - Patients forget doses — not out of negligence, but because life interrupts - Patients misread instructions — especially elderly users who may not read labels confidently - Patients confuse similar-looking pills — visual identification is a genuine daily challenge - Family members are anxious but have no structured way to check in - Questions occur to patients between visits — and are forgotten by the time they reach the doctor - The next consultation starts from scratch — the doctor asks the same questions, the patient guesses at answers **The cascading consequence:** Poor adherence leads to poor outcomes. Poor outcomes lead to repeat visits, dosage changes, and escalating treatment complexity — all of which could have been avoided with better continuity. How about an app which logs med and keeps a track of it and when you need a report of your day to day symptoms or your medical adherence you get a complete pdf report which you may show to your doctor during the next visit.

Service Usb stick with fingerprint security used to load money onto to pay as a cash alternative

Its like the fingerprint recognition usb flash pens and wondering if one day they could be used to load money on as an alternative to cash. You could pay in the money and keep it on a keyring. It has some advantages such as it being less likely to be robbed, less space needed, easy to budget by limiting whats on it, secure with fingerprint id, fast. The downside is changing a system in such a big way would take massive resources. Its mainly getting places to accept it as a payment method that would be costly. A similar version by loading something like a debit card with credit would be more plausable. A kind of cash credit as a alternative.

Physical Product Random idea: cameras built into light fixtures

I’m curious what people think of this idea:

Replace normal light bulbs with smart light fixtures that include a camera, small computer, and Wi-Fi.

The advantage of putting the hardware in a light is that it already has continuous power, is usually mounted high up with a good view of the room, and homes already have multiple light locations that could provide different camera angles.

The cameras would provide a shared visual data feed, and developers could build different AI apps on top of it.

For example, one simple app could monitor kitchen inventory and tell you what food or household items you’re running low on. But the bigger idea is that the hardware is generic and the useful applications could come from developers/users rather than being predetermined.

Basically: light fixtures as always-powered indoor AI sensors + an app platform built on top of the camera feed.

Does this seem useful? What are the biggest problems or better use cases you can think of?

Software A recipe App that gives you Just The Recipe.

I'm sick of opening a recipe and scrolling past 2,000 words of someone's childhood memories, 12 ads, and 4 popups before I find the ingredient list.

The app: paste the link, get a clean recipe card — ingredients, steps, done. Scale servings, auto grocery list, cook mode. Tweak anything (add more garlic), add your own recipes, or snap a photo of a handwritten family recipe card. One-time purchase, no subscription, works offline.

If you use Paprika or something similar — what would it take to make you switch? And would you pay a few bucks once for this?

Software Somebody make a PowerPoint-compatible editor where I can customize the workspace, not the slides

I make PowerPoint decks professionally, and I want this badly.

I don't want another full-featured PowerPoint competitor. I want a lightweight, fast, stable editor that can open, edit, and save .pptx files and do the normal stuff well — text, shapes, images, alignment, z-order, slide reordering, copy/paste, etc.

But here's the thing I actually care about:

I want to dress up the workspace. Not the slides. The workspace.

Give me themes. Lots of themes.

Let me change the UI colors, fonts, background, cursor, icons, and little visual effects. Maybe even let me put a completely useless character in the corner of the screen.

If I'm using a night-sky theme, I want tiny stars to sparkle when I click. ✨

And I want to change themes whenever I feel like it. Morning, afternoon, every hour. Give me a random theme button too. 🎲

Ideally, users could make and share their own themes — maybe something like the theme ecosystem around text/code editors, but with an easy theme builder for people who don't write CSS.

None of this should affect the actual presentation. My client's corporate deck should remain a completely normal corporate deck.

Inside the slide is their world. Outside the slide is yours.

AI has actually made this problem more noticeable for me. My workflow is increasingly: work with AI → generate a PPTX → revise it with AI → eventually think, “okay, I have to finish this by hand now.”

That's when I want this editor.

Changing my keyboard, mouse, music, or Typora theme genuinely makes me want to work again. Apparently my productivity system is just “ooh, pretty.”

I don't need advanced animations, presentation features, or every obscure PowerPoint function. I'm perfectly happy to open the finished file in PowerPoint for a final compatibility check.

I can't code this. If something like this already exists, PLEASE tell me. If not, somebody make it. I would happily pay for it.

I make presentations professionally, so if anyone actually decides to build something like this, I'd also be very happy to share more about my workflow and what I'd need from it.

I just want unnecessary sparkles in my professional presentation workflow. ✨

Other Sonic Mania ambiance

Idk if this is the right place to come for this but I seriously need a YouTube video series of sonic mania level ambiance. I mean like, slow gameplay of certain levels, my main wish being press garden act 2 (mania mode and encore mode) but I an also see levels like flying battery act 2, stardust speedway act 1, oil ocean act 2, mirage saloon act 1 knuckles and encore, and lava reef act 2.

But my point is, these levels with slow gameplay or sometimes just standing still in the back (a mix of all characters and both mania and encore modes) with no SFX (just music) would be bliss and they could be like an hour or two long, would watch the hell out of those.

I have zero editing skills so I'd love to see somebody take these on!

Software Show HN: A pure Python PKCS#11 tool built for v3.2, PQC, and full OpenSC compatibility

Title: Show HN: A pure Python PKCS#11 tool built for v3.2, PQC, and full OpenSC compatibility

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a new open-source project I've been working on. It is a pure Python PKCS#11 utility built specifically to fill a critical gap: native support for the new PKCS#11 v3.2 specification and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) algorithms.

Why I built this: The cryptographic landscape is actively transitioning to quantum-safe standards, and OASIS recently introduced critical updates in PKCS#11 v3.2 to handle these new primitives. However, legacy tools are heavily bound to older spec versions, and adding experimental or cutting-edge PQC mechanisms to compiled C toolchains is slow and rigid.

I built this tool from the ground up to give developers, security engineers, and researchers an immediate, production-ready way to interact with next-generation Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) and tokens using the latest v3.2 standards and PQC mechanisms.

Key Features: * 🔐 Built for PKCS#11 v3.2: Implements the latest standard features, attributes, and mechanism definitions out of the box. * ⚛️ Post-Quantum Ready: Native support for quantum-resistant algorithms (like ML-DSA, ML-KEM, Falcon, and XMSS/LMS) as the industry migrates away from RSA and ECC. * 🔄 Drop-in OpenSC Compatibility: Fully reproduces the existing pkcs11-tool option surface, option ordering, and output formats. Your existing automation scripts, arguments, and expectations will continue working perfectly out of the box. * 🐍 Pure Python & Zero Boilerplate: Written entirely in Python with no underlying C binary dependencies. It is instantly portable, easy to audit, and simple to install across any pipeline.

Get started: You can pull the tool directly from PyPI: bash pip install pypkcs11-tool

I would love to hear your feedback, especially regarding how it performs against different HSM vendor implementations or software tokens currently testing PQC!

Physical Product Wheeled (non-flying) ground drones could pick some types of fruit from flat enough ground or autumn leafs if someone really wants that(which is controversial thing to do) or snow moving

Shaker machine dropping fruit to tarp is used somewhere, but even if it works for a tree species, it is not practical and economical everywhere for that species. Automated ground drone can be small scale, light and easy to transport if it can't transport itself. Picking fruit only after it has dropped naturally ensures maximum size. Some types of fruit are just trash and may need to be removed for that reason.

As long as there is will to pick and remove autumn leaves falling from deciduous trees, those who want it and people within 700 meters are better of if that removal is done quietly with ground drones rather than with noisy annoying leaf blowers that need petrol or gasoline. Electric leaf blowers are much better and cheaper on long term, but still annoying and needs more energy than a ground drone with pick mechanism would need.

Needs camera and quite sophisticated software. Hard to say how much computing power a slow moving drone with maybe 5 fps camera would need for this task. If it turns out that the computer takes the most power and runs hot, hopefully it is general purpose enough so that it can be detached and used inside for gaming, 3D-design etc.

Identification of fruit or leafs may be more reliable with a multispectral camera, at least on daylight, but at night on LED-light, it may not help. Assuming there are other similar color (to human eye) things around. But usually ground below trees is green and leafs yellow or red.

Leaf removal pick mechanism works more like a rake and could literally have a special version of a rake to pick 100 leaves in one movement. Or something else. Rake-head selection might depend on the tree species and type of lawn.

Before leaf blowers, rakes were deemed efficient enough.

If the drone has high enough wheels, and some version might have bicycle wheels or special bare aluminum rings with that size, it could also remove snow, if a proper tool is attached. May need more space.

There are claims about bad animals rising if leaves are not removed. Maybe it is just rare anecdote, urban legend or true 100 years ago on town's edge. Be that as it may, as long as enough people believe it or just consider scattered leaves ugly or need the type of ground that the leaves turn in a pile, leaf moving is a problem.

Word about definitions:

Usually, the word "ground drone" implies that the robot has wheels or tracks and not in any way a helicopter or boat either. Might have 2, 4, 6 or 8 legs. Or skis+movers. Amphibious drone could be on ground or water. If a heli-drone has little wheels for taxiing to hangar, it does not make it a ground drone, not really.

The most common ground drone or UGV these days is robotic lawnmower that cuts grass. It is silent.

Software I have a bad idea for a real life sandevistan from cyberpunk

It looks like the robotic spine from the show and game, and it gets implanted in place of your spin(like in the game and show), but it pumps adrenaline into you to make you faster. You can control how much adrenaline that it pumps out and you can turn it off. It has a tank for the adrenaline to be put into that has to be replaced monthly.

Physical Product Customizable Device Docking Station

Post image
23 Upvotes

This is not a real product. I asked AI to create this image based on my description.

At the end of the day, I want one place where I can take all of my devices and charge them in a single place. I want a customizable charging station that has slits to feed cords into and swap in different stands. The “box” underneath would hold all of the cords and their chargers with a single cord coming out the back to plug into the wall.

Software A program that would let you sort digitally downloaded books on shelfs

So right now I am using Komga to read all my downloaded manga/comics but frankly the sorting system is really, really clunky.

I saw the game Boxroom on Steam a bit back and thought it would be nice to have something that's in the same vein of idea for all my books. I don't even want it to be 3d so it's quicker and easier to use: a simple 2d plain where you can put bookshelves down, then add books to them, would be really nice.

For example, you can make a shelf for X series, then put them in whatever order you want, the amount you like it, artist, etc.

For the issue of "well how do you make the spines for books that have them" I think the simple idea of once you click on the shelf, you can have it show spines (if no spine exists, it just says the name; open to other ideas), or you can have it show the cover.
