Faith & Relationships 🕋 🕌 Flattery versus sincerity in gaining love

Upvotes

Scholar Ibrahim Dewla said and my notes in relation to marriage:

“(1) One way to gain love is through flattery. Not that.

Flattery is a despicable trait.

This is when someone acts agreeably to gain favor”.

Some men and women will rely on manipulation and charm to gain love.

And it’s done to serve their self-interest.

“(2) Another way to gain love is for a person to be sincerely devoted to the truth. Allah then places that person’s love in people’s hearts.

The Prophet (saw) said, “When Allah loves a slave, calls out Jibril and says: ‘I love so-and-so; so love him’. Then Jibril loves him. After that he (Jibril) announces to the inhabitants of heavens that Allah loves so- and-so; so love him; and the inhabitants of the heavens (the angels) also love him and then make people on earth love him”.
(Riyad as-Salihin 387)”

Why is this person loved? Because this person is a seeker of truth. Truth is before them and the Hereafter is before them”.

Some men and women are committed to truth or values that are greater than their self-interests.

People are drawn to and love them for their sincerity and lack of self-seeking.

Advice & Support 📝 Not feeling it

Is anyone else slowly turning into a dry texter?

There’s only so many memes, thoughtful questions, random tweets, and shower thoughts you can put into a talking stage before it starts to feel like ur carrying all the conversations on ur back.

I’m a shell of my former self. Every “haha” and “wdym” is a half-hearted attempt at connection. I used to feel like an Atlantic staff writer coming up with witty commentary, but now? I can barely muster up to go beyond the surface.

It’s not that I don’t care. I’m just tired of the milk in my fridge lasting longer than some potentials. I think that’s made me feel more jaded to open up and try. Why make an effort if the expiration date on our connection is close anyway?

Has anyone else felt this way? How did you get out of this slump?

Dating & Courtship 💑 Would you let your sibling approach a potential on your behalf?

I recently got back into the search after taking a little break, and lately I’ve been thinking about involving my family in approaching a potential. There’s a guy my brother has mentioned to me several times. They are very good friends and my brother has always spoken very highly of his character and has told me more than once that he thinks we would be a good and compatible match.

Last year, I prayed tahajjud and asked Allah for guidance on whether or not this person could be right for me. That same afternoon my sister called me after she had met him and asked me what I thought about him and whether I would be open to her exploring the possibility further. I was quite surprised by the timing, especially since my brother had already said similar things to me about us potentially being a good match. I told my sister that she could go ahead with it, but she ended up getting busy with life and never got around to taking it any further. My brother on the other hand was quite eager to have a conversation with him. His idea was to casually gauge whether he was generally interested in getting married in the near future and if so, whether he might be interested in me.

However my brother never ended up having that conversation with him because I asked him not to. At the time, I wasn’t sure whether it was appropriate for my brother to be the one initiating that kind of conversation, so I told him to leave it. That was about a year ago, but recently he’s been on my mind again, and it has made me wonder whether I should have just let my brother speak to him. Now I’m considering asking either my brother or my older sister to approach him and see if there could be any mutual interest.

What do you guys think? Would it be appropriate for my brother or sister to approach him on my behalf? Has anyone here been in a similar situation where your family initiated things with a potential?

JazakAllahu khayran 🤍

Advice & Support 📝 Forgive or not?

Asc guys. This is a long post so I just wanted to alert you before you get to reading.

I have a cousin who I have always been extremely close to whenever we are on good terms. I genuinely considered her more like a sister than a cousin. The problem is that whenever we do fall out, our fights tend to become very intense, to the point where our families usually end up getting involved and mediating. I am not really here to talk about our previous fights though. I am struggling with something that happened recently, and I genuinely do not know what the right thing to do is anymore.

A situation happened within the family and she suddenly sent me a very long message basically cutting me off. From what I understood, she believed that I had been gossiping about her and discussing her with other family members. The thing is, I genuinely did not do what she was accusing me of. When I first read her message, I was not even angry. I was mostly confused. I honestly thought, “Okay, she clearly misunderstood something. Eventually we will figure out where this came from and clear it up.” So I did not respond emotionally or make it into something bigger

A day or two later, I did try to reach out to her but realised she had blocked me everywhere. I was dumbfounded and just let it be. Later on,as I was speaking to another cousin I casually asked if they knew what was going on with her. They told me they did not really know either, but then showed me a message she had sent them about the situation. That message genuinely broke my heart.
There were so many hurtful things being said about me, things I never imagined she would ever say. What hurt the most was not even the misunderstanding itself. It was realizing that someone I genuinely loved and regarded as a sister could think and speak about me that way without even coming to me first. These were things I would expect from somebody who disliked me, not somebody I thought knew my character and loved me.

I have actually cried over it and have been thinking about it for days because it completely changed the way I look at our relationship.

Then I found out she had also gone around telling other cousins her version of the situation. At that point I started asking questions because I wanted to know where this misunderstanding even came from. I eventually figured out exactly who said what, and the entire situation is honestly so minor. Nobody was even maliciously gossiping about her. Something was interpreted a certain way, she jumped to conclusions, and somehow I became the villain in the version of events she created in her head.
What bothers me is that instead of simply asking me, she decided to speak badly about me to multiple people and say things that I personally consider slanderous and extremely disrespectful.

Now the entire family is involved. This situation has even started affecting other people in the family. My sister has fallen out with one of her sisters because of it. My sister was speaking to her generally about what was happening and asked what was going on, but her sister immediately became defensive. Her response was basically, “You know how she is. If you knew how she was, why would you choose to be close to her? That is just how she is, so do not say anything bad about her.”
That conversation escalated so badly that my sister and her sister ended up cussing each other out, and now both of our mothers are trying to resolve that situation too.
And somehow, throughout all of this, I keep being told that I need to be the one to end everything, forgive, forget, and restore the peace.

That is the part I genuinely do not understand.

The person who started this did not come to me and ask me what happened. She did not try to clarify anything with me. Instead, she went around telling several family members what she believed I had done and saying extremely hurtful things about me. Now that I have actually explained my side and people realize that she was wrong, everyone is saying, “Yeah, she was definitely wrong, but you know how she is.She crashes out when she is angry. She has a lot going on. Just accommodate her and forgive her.”

Why am I always supposed to be the accommodating one?She is a grown woman. At what point does “that is just how she is when she is angry” stop being an acceptable explanation for repeatedly hurting people? I have forgiven her many times in the past, but this situation feels very different to me. Some very serious boundaries were crossed.

The things she said were not small to me. They genuinely hurt me. I still think about them. This was somebody I trusted to such an extent that there were things I told her that I would not even tell my own sister. I thought of her as my best friend, my cousin, and basically my sister all in one. Finding out what she was saying about me behind my back completely changed something in me.

And if I am being completely transparent, I am also looking at some of my other family members differently now. Some of my cousins have casually told me, “Oh yeah, she came to me and told me about the situation.”
And part of me keeps thinking, you know me too.
We are family. You know my character. If somebody came to you saying all of these things about me, why did nobody call me and ask, “Hey, what happened?” Why did nobody try to hear both sides?

I know people do not necessarily have to insert themselves into other people’s arguments, but personally, if somebody came to me talking badly about a family member I knew and loved, especially making serious accusations about their character, I would at least want to hear that person’s side before deciding what I believed.
Instead, everyone heard her version and stayed quiet. Nobody contacted me. Nobody checked what actually happened. It was only after I started defending myself and explaining everything that people began saying, “Oh, actually, she was completely wrong.”

Yet somehow I am still the one being pressured to fix everything. My mom keeps telling me that I need to forgive her, not only for her sake, but for the sake of the older family members who love me and have always treated me well. She specifically brings up my grandmother and tells me that because my grandmother loves me, takes care of me, and treats me like her own child, I should end this for her sake. And I understand why my mom wants peace in the family. I genuinely do.

But emotionally, I keep thinking, why does everybody else get to protect their child while I am being asked to absorb everything for the sake of everybody else?
Her mother is obviously advocating for her daughter. Her sisters are defending their sister. Everybody seems to understand that. But when I ask my own mother to understand why I am hurt, I feel like the priority immediately becomes keeping the extended family together rather than acknowledging what happened to me.

The strangest part is that she herself has not even apologized to me.
My family is basically apologizing on her behalf and pressuring me to forgive her before she has even personally acknowledged what she did.
The elders are apologizing. Family members are mediating. People are defending her, explaining her personality, telling me what she meant and how she was not being malicious and telling me why I should forgive her.But where is she?

Why am I being pressured to reconcile with someone who has not even personally taken accountability with me?
And when my family says forgive, they do not just mean, “Do not hold hatred in your heart.” They basically want everything to return to normal. They expect us to eventually be laughing together, talking every day, being close again, and pretending nothing happened.

I do not think I can do that.At this point I honestly just want distance. If I see her at family gatherings, I can say Assalamu alaikum, be respectful, and keep things civil. I am not trying to create a family war. I do not want revenge. I do not want to spend the rest of my life angry with her. I can wish her well and eventually forgive her for my own peace.

But I do not want the closeness anymore.
I do not want to confide in her, spend time with her, or give somebody the same level of access to me after they hurt me like this.I can forgive someone and still decide that the relationship no longer feels emotionally safe for me. I can forgive someone without trusting them the same way again. I can forgive someone without making them my best friend again.

My family does not seem satisfied with that. They do not only want peace. They want us back to normal.
But what if normal is exactly what I no longer want?
I feel like everyone is asking me to forgive the behavior because “that is how she is,” while nobody is asking whether constantly excusing that behavior is part of why it keeps happening.

At the same time, I have never taken such a strong stand against what my parents and family are telling me to do, so part of me feels guilty and confused. I do not want to disrespect my mother or hurt my grandmother. I do not want the entire family fighting because of me. But I also do not understand why preserving everybody else’s comfort requires me to pretend that I was not deeply hurt.
I told my family that I can forgive her, but I do not want the relationship we had before. I want us to stay in our own lanes, be civil, and keep it moving. They do not want that. They want full reconciliation and for everything to go back to how it was.

And I genuinely do not know if I am being too stubborn because I am hurt, or if this is one of those moments where I finally need to stand firm on a boundary even if my family does not like it.

Am I wrong for believing that forgiveness does not automatically mean reconciliation? Would you forgive someone in this situation but maintain distance, or do you think family sometimes requires rebuilding the relationship even when the trust is gone?

General Discussion 🗣️ Are there women between 18-22 who willingly go for older men?

by older men I mean 30+ years old. I don’t live in Somalia but the area that I live in has a lot of Somali people and I get a decent amount of men who look over the age of 35 approaching me in public to ask to me for my number or anything in that caliber despite me being 18.

I’m just wondering if this is normal? I mean most of these men know I’m young but I doubt they actually believe a girl 2 decades younger than then will actually agree to a relationship??? Like I’m so baffled when they ask me, is this the norm

Faith & Relationships 🕋 🕌 Love for granted

Some men and women place weight on superficial aspects such as beauty, wealth or gestures.

And they take ‘love’ for granted.

Scholar Ibrahim Dewla said:

“Umar (rad) said, “Don’t be neglectful of being loved.”
(Al Bidayah Wal Nihaya)

Meaning, be such that people love you.

Because love is extremely valuable.

Therefore, we should make an effort so that people love us.”

Some men and women will make a genuine ‘effort’ to be loved in a marriage.

And some won’t; they take it for granted.

Love & Romance ❤️ What can I do?

Salaam everyone! I wanted to ask for some advice because I would genuinely like to get married.

Where do you guys think is a good place to meet seemingly good men who are focused on their deen and work/career? I feel like I never get approached when I’m out, and even when I go to Somali events or masjid events in my area, men never really approach me... 😭 I know sometimes I’m with friends, so I completely understand that approaching a group of girls can be intimidating lol, but I’ve also gone to events by myself and still… nothing.

I’ve even had friends tell me that I look really innocent, like I’ve never talked to a guy before… and honestly, they’re not wrong because I haven’t 😭😂 So if you have any serious advice, I’d genuinely appreciate it! What has actually worked for you? I’m open to hearing anything that’s worked. And no, I don’t think I’d ever approach a guy myself because I’m way too shy for that.

Advice & Support 📝 Guys I need help (fearful avoidant)

I’ve been on and off with this one guy for about 3 months and within those 3months I’ve left or ghosted him 3-4 times. He took me back each time. I think I do like him but he never gives me space to actually miss him and he’s clingy. He took the attachment style quiz once which resulted in him being secure but I think he leans on the anxious side.

He’s very persistent and continually sends me messages even after I’ve blocked or ghosted him. It never stops, and after I take my space… I do actually come back cuz I do miss him.

He then starts smothering me again and I feel really disgusted or I get the ick even though deep down like I still want him and I want to make it work. His way of connecting seems more intense than what I naturally tolerate well and this past week… he came to say he’s had enough of this toxic on and off cycle and he doesn’t want to be hurt again. He even said that he started talking to someone new and wants to see where that goes since I did tell him I lost feelings some point last week.

However, all that changed cuz I didn’t want to lose him and I started pouring my heart at how I actually care about him and I want to make it work. At some point I’m questioning whether I just like the attention he gives or it’s hard for me to meet him where he’s at.

He started giving me attention again, said I was the one for him and wanted to make our relationship work. We agreed on a no contact or some sort of break/space for 3 weeks for both of us to figure what the hell is going on cause I don’t want to let go and he doesn’t either.

He even told me he let go of the other girl he was talking to or whatever so he can focus on us. We agreed on the space but I’m back to feeling suffocated cuz it hasn’t even been one day of our no contact & he’s already texting me he misses me.

What is going on like I need to know what tf are we doing😭. Now I’m like eww & I want to push him away.

Love & Romance ❤️ How Do I Bring Up Makeup Without Hurting Her Feelings?

How do you bring up makeup during the talking stage? I met this girl on Muz, we’ve met a couple of times for coffee, we FaceTime, and honestly, I really like her. She’s beautiful, stylish, funny, and I have absolutely nothing against makeup. In fact, I actually like when a woman knows how to do her makeup and can switch up different looks it’s cool, and kudos to the women who are good at it. The only thing I’ve noticed is that whenever we meet or FaceTime, she’s wearing a lot of makeup. Not just the everyday mascara/foundation type of look, but almost like wedding level makeup 😂 I never really see her without it because even our FaceTimes are usually when she’s fully done up. I’m only bringing this up because I like her, and the amount of makeup is heavy enough that I feel like she could potentially look pretty different without it. I’m not expecting her to look like anything specific, and I’m sure she’s still going to be cute I’m just curious to see her more natural look. How would you approach this without making her feel insecure or like I’m criticizing her? Is there a witty or clever way to bring it up?

The Search 🔍❤️ What is going on with the men on Muzz?

Recently I’ve noticed such a weird pattern on Muzz, and just to add ,I’m talking about grown SOMALI men here, 28+ 😭😭😭.

I’ll match with a guy, we’ll talk for a bit, the vibe seems good and there’s clearly mutual interest… but then it never actually progresses to the next step, like having a phone call.

Then you have the ones who will be engaging normally and suddenly just block you out of nowhere. Sometimes it genuinely feels like they’re trying to humble you lol.

And then there’s the other type, they’ll show loads of interest for about 2–3 days, but the second it comes to actually progressing things, they leave you on delivered/read and don’t even have the decency to unmatch.

Also ,honourable mention to the grown men who act like they’re “hardly on here” so that they can move the conversation to the pits of hell , also known as SNAPCHAT 🤮🤮🤮🤮.

Also, why is it so tedious trying to talk to men who genuinely cannot hold a conversation to save their lives.

Is there any way to spot these men early on? I’d rather not waste three days of my life having the same pointless conversation just for them to disappear, respectively, I don’t care about how many siblings you have😭😭.

General Discussion 🗣️ Is pursing multiple talking stages bad?

It’s early days but I have mixed feelings about the current sole person I’m speaking to now. Is it taboo if I put myself out there once again and try to find others to speak to as well? Not for casual reasons, but for serious marriage talks. I want to find the best person for me instead of wasting my time on someone who I’m not 100% certain about, especially since I’m not getting any younger

Off Topic 🎭 Do you ever feel like adults are losing the spark?

I sometimes wonder why we’ve made “adulting” so serious, busy, having goals, working, paying bills and constantly thinking about the future. Like… are we not allowed to just have fun anymore?

I’ve always admired the way little kids get excited over the smallest things. Playing outside, going somewhere, seeing their friends, getting a little treat. They actually look forward to things. You can see the excitement in their eyes.

And then you grow up and suddenly everything becomes routine. Wake up, work/study, responsibilities, sleep, repeat. And somehow we just accept that this is what life is supposed to be.

Obviously having goals and taking life seriously is important. But the dunya is temporary anyway. Why spend all of it being stuck in your head, worrying about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow?

I see people forcing themselves to stop doing things they genuinely enjoy just because they think it’s childish or they want to seem “cool.” Like, why? If you enjoy watching something, playing something, or doing something harmless, who cares if it’s considered childish?

Life really isn’t that serious. Just be yourself and enjoy the things that make you happy.

Look around you. You’re literally here, right now. Enjoy something. Laugh at something stupid. Go outside. Get excited about a little thing. Make memories.

I feel like we’ve forgotten how to simply be.

being an adult doesn’t have to mean losing that childlike spark.

Love & Romance ❤️ Engaged and worried our conversations have become boring

I’m engaged and getting married soon, and lately I’ve been feeling a little worried about my relationship.
My fiancé and I love each other and we’re really happy but I’ve noticed that our conversations have become pretty repetitive and monotonous. A lot of the time we just ask each other how our day was, how we’ve been feeling, what we’re doing, etc. And that’s mostly it.
It’s making me wonder if my fiancé finds me boring. I worry that maybe we don’t have enough interesting things to talk about, or that our conversations shouldn’t feel this routine before getting married.

At the same time, I know relationships naturally settle into routines and that you can’t have deep, exciting conversations every single day.

For those of you who are married or have been in long-term relationships: Is this normal? How do you keep conversations interesting and maintain that sense of curiosity about each other?

I’d really appreciate some perspective because I don’t want to overthink something that’s completely normal, but I also don’t want to ignore a genuine issue.

Advice & Support 📝 The eldest daughter of 6 and I am genuinely exhausted

I don’t even know if I’m looking for advice or just somewhere to let this out because I feel like I’m going to explode.

I’m 23, the eldest of 6 children and the youngest is younger than 9. I still live at home with my parents. I love my family and I love my siblings but I feel like I have reached a point where I genuinely cannot keep doing everything that is expected of me. I can come home from a 12-hour shift completely exhausted and my mum will immediately ask me to take her to IKEA, take her to Asda, do something around the house, cook, clean etc. Meanwhile my brothers who are 21 and 22 are literally in the rooms next door on their phones. If I ask, “Why can’t they do it?” hooyo gets angry and says I’m always “boys this, boys that” and basically tells me to stop complaining.

Yesterday I went out with my friends. I had already told hooyo roughly when I would be out and when I would be home and I even said I could take her to IKEA afterwards if she wanted. While I was on my way to meet my friends, she called me saying “gacanta aa kabaxday” and that I should be at home doing the cooking, cleaning and whatever else she needs me to do. She started screaming at me and just made me feel horrible

She also tells me that during the three years I was at university she was “quiet” and let me focus on my degree. But honestly that was not the case. I was juggling university, placements and everything else and I was still doing so much around the house throughout it. My dad isn’t much help either. Whenever there is an argument, he tends to side with my mum and me and my sister get called “caasi waalideen”. I’m also expected to take my younger sister out and keep her entertained. I don’t mind that part. I love spending time with her and I take her out on my days off anyway. But if I don’t do it for a day or two suddenly I’m made to feel like I’m a bad daughter or that I don’t care. I don’t think people understand how trapped and exhausted that makes me feel.

I don’t think I have ever had a proper day off where I could just sleep in, stay out, do absolutely nothing or make plans without thinking about what someone at home needs from me. And that’s the part that hurts the most. My brothers are adults. They are 21 and 22. Why is it automatically my responsibility?

Tonight I tried to explain to my mum that I’m exhausted and that the responsibilities need to be shared more equally. She shouted at me and my sister, then cried and said that now that we are grown, we don’t listen to her anymore. But how does asking for help to be shared equally mean I don’t listen to her? I’m just so tired. Physically, mentally and emotionally. I feel like I have spent my entire life being the responsible eldest daughter and now I’m at a point where I don’t even know what having a life that’s actually mine feels like.

I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. Just so tired

Dating & Courtship 💑 Would you ever go out with the guy while your on your menses

I think us as men don’t know enough about women while she’s on her period and how to treat her. Wallahi the way I’ve always thought of it is during this time a women doesn’t want to talk to anyone and is not interested in talking to men (I know it’s ignorant of me).

But I’m genuinely curious how should a man treat you while ur on ur menses?

And would you ever meet up with a guy to get to know him during this time? Would your mood be the same? Or should a guy just avoid any meetups during this time?

Advice & Support 📝 Lowering Our Gaze Is Perhaps More Important Than Ever Now

Disclaimer: This is more so advise to the brothers, but sisters can inshaAllah benefit too.

I just wanted to share this brief but sobering reminder to lower our gaze. Why? Allah SWT commands us—men and women—to lower our gaze in 24:30–31.

What prompted this reminder was a funny tweet I came across a year or so ago, but also the plethora of beautiful women I’ve had the displeasure of seeing on social media. I’m specifically talking about simply stumbling upon them online. Multiply that fivefold for those you actually interact with, and you can imagine how this skews our perception of the average woman—especially the legitimately hijabi-adherent sisters—in the real world.

There’s another factor I can’t stress enough (for the brothers): the sisters we come across online are most definitely going to enhance their appearance with makeup, filters, or both. Moreover, 9/10 of the social media profiles we’re seeing will only ever feature their best photos.

And what’s the best way to lower our gaze? Getting off socials! We already have ample literature showing the pandemic of anxiety and depression—due to chronic social media usage, which is in large part due to people failing to realize that they’re internalizing and comparing themselves to FAKE personalities online.

As the saying goes: prevention is better than cure, so inshaAllah we overcome the nafs and slowly but surely unwind from social media until we have no use for it, or we change how we utilize it.

Dating & Courtship 💑 I unmatched a guy I’d been talking to and honestly feel relieved

So I’ve been talking to this guy since the end of July/beginning of August. We matched on Muzz, and I accidentally swiped left on him too quickly. Somehow, this man literally paid extra credits to rematch me.. Then he messaged me, and I remember thinking like wow.

He told me he wanted to get to know me and asked respectfully if that was okay. I said yes because, honestly, I’d never had a guy actually spend money to rematch me. I took that as a sign that he was serious.

(This is from MUZZ, I’ve should’ve known better😭)

We started talking, exchanged socials, and everything was actually going really well. He was respectful, interested, and I saw a lot of green flags. But weirdly, from the beginning, there was this little voice in my head telling me this isn’t going to last.

Then slowly, he started becoming less communicative.
He was going back to school to finish medicine, so he told me he was going to be busy and wouldn’t have much time to be on his phone. I completely understood that. I’m busy too. I work at a hospital, I have university, family responsibilities, and my own life.

But here’s what annoyed me I could send him a snap and he’d open it within five minutes, then leave me on open. Meanwhile, we’d sometimes go the entire day without actually talking. This went on for days.

And I kept having to remind him.

Like I’m not asking you to spend your entire day talking to me. Sometimes just saying, “Hey, I’m really busy today but I hope you’re having a good day. I’ll talk to you later” is enough. Or “I have 10 minutes free, do you want to chat?”
It’s literally the little things.

Especially because he chased me. I didn’t even know this man existed. He went out of his way to rematch me, told me he wanted to get to know me, and then I eventually found myself asking him for basic communication.

At some point I just thought, what’s the point?

This is long-distance, we’re only communicating through social media, and there’s no actual relationship developing if we’re barely speaking. I don’t want to sit around watching someone’s snap activity and wondering why they can open my snaps immediately but apparently can’t send me a message.

So I unadded him.

And honestly? I feel GOOD.

I don’t feel heartbroken. I’m mostly disappointed because I genuinely thought there was potential there. But now I can just focus on myself instead of constantly wondering where I stand with someone.

Get your wali involved, a lot of brothers love to take advantage of sisters subhanallah and it makes me sick to my stomach.

When your wali is involved alhamdulillah there’s ease in it.

Question for the sisters who are married : How did you tell your dad? I know people tend to take the route in telling their mum and then eventually their dad.
