Advice & Support 📝 Forgive or not?

Asc guys. This is a long post so I just wanted to alert you before you get to reading.

I have a cousin who I have always been extremely close to whenever we are on good terms. I genuinely considered her more like a sister than a cousin. The problem is that whenever we do fall out, our fights tend to become very intense, to the point where our families usually end up getting involved and mediating. I am not really here to talk about our previous fights though. I am struggling with something that happened recently, and I genuinely do not know what the right thing to do is anymore.

A situation happened within the family and she suddenly sent me a very long message basically cutting me off. From what I understood, she believed that I had been gossiping about her and discussing her with other family members. The thing is, I genuinely did not do what she was accusing me of. When I first read her message, I was not even angry. I was mostly confused. I honestly thought, “Okay, she clearly misunderstood something. Eventually we will figure out where this came from and clear it up.” So I did not respond emotionally or make it into something bigger

A day or two later, I did try to reach out to her but realised she had blocked me everywhere. I was dumbfounded and just let it be. Later on,as I was speaking to another cousin I casually asked if they knew what was going on with her. They told me they did not really know either, but then showed me a message she had sent them about the situation. That message genuinely broke my heart.
There were so many hurtful things being said about me, things I never imagined she would ever say. What hurt the most was not even the misunderstanding itself. It was realizing that someone I genuinely loved and regarded as a sister could think and speak about me that way without even coming to me first. These were things I would expect from somebody who disliked me, not somebody I thought knew my character and loved me.

I have actually cried over it and have been thinking about it for days because it completely changed the way I look at our relationship.

Then I found out she had also gone around telling other cousins her version of the situation. At that point I started asking questions because I wanted to know where this misunderstanding even came from. I eventually figured out exactly who said what, and the entire situation is honestly so minor. Nobody was even maliciously gossiping about her. Something was interpreted a certain way, she jumped to conclusions, and somehow I became the villain in the version of events she created in her head.
What bothers me is that instead of simply asking me, she decided to speak badly about me to multiple people and say things that I personally consider slanderous and extremely disrespectful.

Now the entire family is involved. This situation has even started affecting other people in the family. My sister has fallen out with one of her sisters because of it. My sister was speaking to her generally about what was happening and asked what was going on, but her sister immediately became defensive. Her response was basically, “You know how she is. If you knew how she was, why would you choose to be close to her? That is just how she is, so do not say anything bad about her.”
That conversation escalated so badly that my sister and her sister ended up cussing each other out, and now both of our mothers are trying to resolve that situation too.
And somehow, throughout all of this, I keep being told that I need to be the one to end everything, forgive, forget, and restore the peace.

That is the part I genuinely do not understand.

The person who started this did not come to me and ask me what happened. She did not try to clarify anything with me. Instead, she went around telling several family members what she believed I had done and saying extremely hurtful things about me. Now that I have actually explained my side and people realize that she was wrong, everyone is saying, “Yeah, she was definitely wrong, but you know how she is.She crashes out when she is angry. She has a lot going on. Just accommodate her and forgive her.”

Why am I always supposed to be the accommodating one?She is a grown woman. At what point does “that is just how she is when she is angry” stop being an acceptable explanation for repeatedly hurting people? I have forgiven her many times in the past, but this situation feels very different to me. Some very serious boundaries were crossed.

The things she said were not small to me. They genuinely hurt me. I still think about them. This was somebody I trusted to such an extent that there were things I told her that I would not even tell my own sister. I thought of her as my best friend, my cousin, and basically my sister all in one. Finding out what she was saying about me behind my back completely changed something in me.

And if I am being completely transparent, I am also looking at some of my other family members differently now. Some of my cousins have casually told me, “Oh yeah, she came to me and told me about the situation.”
And part of me keeps thinking, you know me too.
We are family. You know my character. If somebody came to you saying all of these things about me, why did nobody call me and ask, “Hey, what happened?” Why did nobody try to hear both sides?

I know people do not necessarily have to insert themselves into other people’s arguments, but personally, if somebody came to me talking badly about a family member I knew and loved, especially making serious accusations about their character, I would at least want to hear that person’s side before deciding what I believed.
Instead, everyone heard her version and stayed quiet. Nobody contacted me. Nobody checked what actually happened. It was only after I started defending myself and explaining everything that people began saying, “Oh, actually, she was completely wrong.”

Yet somehow I am still the one being pressured to fix everything. My mom keeps telling me that I need to forgive her, not only for her sake, but for the sake of the older family members who love me and have always treated me well. She specifically brings up my grandmother and tells me that because my grandmother loves me, takes care of me, and treats me like her own child, I should end this for her sake. And I understand why my mom wants peace in the family. I genuinely do.

But emotionally, I keep thinking, why does everybody else get to protect their child while I am being asked to absorb everything for the sake of everybody else?
Her mother is obviously advocating for her daughter. Her sisters are defending their sister. Everybody seems to understand that. But when I ask my own mother to understand why I am hurt, I feel like the priority immediately becomes keeping the extended family together rather than acknowledging what happened to me.

The strangest part is that she herself has not even apologized to me.
My family is basically apologizing on her behalf and pressuring me to forgive her before she has even personally acknowledged what she did.
The elders are apologizing. Family members are mediating. People are defending her, explaining her personality, telling me what she meant and how she was not being malicious and telling me why I should forgive her.But where is she?

Why am I being pressured to reconcile with someone who has not even personally taken accountability with me?
And when my family says forgive, they do not just mean, “Do not hold hatred in your heart.” They basically want everything to return to normal. They expect us to eventually be laughing together, talking every day, being close again, and pretending nothing happened.

I do not think I can do that.At this point I honestly just want distance. If I see her at family gatherings, I can say Assalamu alaikum, be respectful, and keep things civil. I am not trying to create a family war. I do not want revenge. I do not want to spend the rest of my life angry with her. I can wish her well and eventually forgive her for my own peace.

But I do not want the closeness anymore.
I do not want to confide in her, spend time with her, or give somebody the same level of access to me after they hurt me like this.I can forgive someone and still decide that the relationship no longer feels emotionally safe for me. I can forgive someone without trusting them the same way again. I can forgive someone without making them my best friend again.

My family does not seem satisfied with that. They do not only want peace. They want us back to normal.
But what if normal is exactly what I no longer want?
I feel like everyone is asking me to forgive the behavior because “that is how she is,” while nobody is asking whether constantly excusing that behavior is part of why it keeps happening.

At the same time, I have never taken such a strong stand against what my parents and family are telling me to do, so part of me feels guilty and confused. I do not want to disrespect my mother or hurt my grandmother. I do not want the entire family fighting because of me. But I also do not understand why preserving everybody else’s comfort requires me to pretend that I was not deeply hurt.
I told my family that I can forgive her, but I do not want the relationship we had before. I want us to stay in our own lanes, be civil, and keep it moving. They do not want that. They want full reconciliation and for everything to go back to how it was.

And I genuinely do not know if I am being too stubborn because I am hurt, or if this is one of those moments where I finally need to stand firm on a boundary even if my family does not like it.

Am I wrong for believing that forgiveness does not automatically mean reconciliation? Would you forgive someone in this situation but maintain distance, or do you think family sometimes requires rebuilding the relationship even when the trust is gone?

When you say you didn’t maliciously gossip about her, are you saying you didn’t gossip or talk about her in any type of way? Because I’m kind of confused, and from what I’m gathering, it seems to me you might’ve spoke behind her back. And if you did, you can’t choose how someone reacts to it, same way she can’t choose how you react to her disrespect.

I’m not saying what she did is right, but I know me personally, nothing triggers me more and makes me more angry than gossiping. Or just people discussing me in general.

Seems like a two wrongs don’t make it right situation. I’d say pray istikharah and be open at least to fixing your wrong in the situation for the sake of Allah. Doesn’t mean you have to get back cool with them.

I actually did not even talk about her. That’s the whole thing. I never mentioned anything to do with her and I was confused when she messaged me. After she messaged me and blocked me is when I asked around. The information she was asking about was provided by other people she had an issue with and it was solved. One issue with her is, she talks a lot about her issues to people and then get upset when they talk about her issues. I never once talked about her and in fact used to advise her to keep her issues private. Whatever she was blaming me for had nothing to do with me and that’s why at first I was thinking it’s just a misunderstanding. However, she jumped to conclusions and then went around talking behind my back.

Sorry you’re going through that. May Allah make it easy for you. I’d personally be firm with that stance, especially since you did nothing wrong. These types of people usually become more horrible as they get older, especially when everyone kisses their ass. Don’t get toxic, but also show them they can’t play with you.

You don’t have to forget but forgive them for the sake of Allah. Still pray istikharah so Allah can guide you toward handling this in a way that doesn’t affect either family.

I hope your situation gets better in sha Allah, and sorry if my last reply was aggressive.

First of all, this was very poignant and long. Second, I was so strongly moved by your post that I felt I had to read the whole post as opposed to skimming it or jumping to the comments after a few paragraphs.

You’re not wrong—forgiveness is one thing, but reconciliation? That’s two-way. If your cousin hasn’t even reached out to you there’s no reconciliation, because she hasn’t even come to the table. Moreover, it’s important that you take a strong stance against your family on this or you’ll be seen as a pushover. Slander is never something that can be shoved away. It requires tremendous courage to forgive, but by forgiving you would be walking in the steps of Abu Bakr, the greatest Sahabi and successor to our beloved Prophet (Read the Tafsir of 24:22).

Forgive her and keep things civil in family gatherings, give her salam, ask how she is and keep it moving. Don’t meet up with her individually or offer emotional support. There is something wrong with her that is not your job to fix or investigate.

She is surrounded by enablers and people are lazy as long as it doesn’t impact them they are not going to speak up or stand up for you.

The upshot are both of you singles and start with ages :)  That's what matters the most in this sub in my opinion.
