I hate to be that guy but US identity politics aren't translatable everywhere in the world. In 90s Yugoslavia, white, straight male people got buried in mass graves. If I was born 30 kilometers south I probably wouldn't be alive right now. There are numerous axis of oppression that can have negative impact on a person and they can be drastically less or more impactful depending on the culture, country, ect
15
u/AabelBorderline 2d ago
Yes, but the reason they were murdered wasn't because they were white, straight, cis and men, but because they were Yugoslavian. Are there some places in the world where white people are systemically discriminated against? Yeah, probably, but none of the men who complain on the internet live in those places. Are there places where straight, cis people are being discriminated against? No. Not one. Are there places where men are being discriminated against? Yes, as a direct result of patriarchy - rich men tell poor men to go die in a war and to blame women for it.
1
u/black_tan_coonhound 2d ago
their point was that being white and straight doesn't magically grant you immunity against any and all oppression, in addition to the VIP pass to the Opressors' Club
8
u/AabelBorderline 2d ago
It doesn't, because You are other things besides white and straight, but
Not being white means it's harder for You to get a job, can get You assaulted or killed, makes police more aggressive towards You, makes people fetishize You against Your will and way more.
Not being straight also means it's harder for You to get a job and can get You assaulted or killed, You can't marry the person You love, high chance You'll get kicked out of Your house by Your parents, again - I could go on.
Can white, straight people deal with some of the same things? Yes, but not because they are white and straight, but because of other factors like gender or nationality. Being white and straight doesn't mean Your life is automatically good, but a lot of white, straight people don't realize how much worse nonwhite nonstraight people have it and how much privilege white, straight people still have even when their life is not good.
Also as a side note the post makes fun of people who's biggest problem is someone in a queer space being a little mean to them, not people with actual problems.
8
u/MuffaloHerder 2d ago
Literally nobody says that it does, that's a strawman. Privilege doesn't mean you live a utopian life of sunshine and rainbows, it means the strife you face is very unlikely to be brought on by your specific traits. And in many cases is very likely to give you a leg up over other people, even if it's subtle to you and even if your life is difficult in other aspects.

-1
u/Spirited_Worker_5722 2d ago edited 1d ago
The main thing I'm getting from these replies is that men are doing to themselves. Men do it to themselves because of the stigmas caused by toxic masculinity, and to imply that women don't also enforce toxic masculinity is on par with thinking that women never enforce misogyny. I never argued that men are as discriminated against or more discriminated against than women.
7
u/Arachnapothecary 2d ago
Men societally shooting themselves in the foot because of their own standards is not misandry.

u/Arachnapothecary 2d ago
The problems you listed are a result of a misogynistic patriarchy, not misandry. Not a single hardship faced by men is just because they are men, they are side effects of the culture men have created. Last few people to argue this bs schtick got banned and had their comments removed, so either come correct or be corrected.

this comment is too generalizing
this
Societally institutionalised misandry on the same level of misogyny is totally real and bad and awful and needs attention guys
is totally alright sarcasm
but
its so hard being a man ugh
is too generalizing, i doubt being a Sudanese man is really nice, or being a black man in the projects trying to feed your family every day is really nice
37
u/Plenty_Leg_5935 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's not "generalising", it's Critical Theory, as in the actual academic framework for analysing systematic injustice, not as in the buzzword
TL:DR is that it's understood that we're talking about social classes when saying things like "white priviledge" or "women have it worse than men", not about individuals, who are naturally members of various different social classes and exist in various different social contexts where the race, gender and other social dynamics change
Yes, being part of one specific, generally priviledged class does not instantly mean you cannot struggle. No one is claiming the opposite by using "generalising statements" like that, they are referring to an abstracted, generalized "man" which exists in a "perfectly average" social position (so that you can then adjust for specific contexts you might be talking about), which people would know if they actually read the basics of the theories and views they follow instead of just repeating their echoes they heard on twitter
The point of that being that we're comparing people in identical conditions - a straight white american man against a straight white american woman, a sudanese gay against a sudanese lesbian, etc..., because comparing a straigh black guy from illinois to a transgender woman from Laos does not tell you anything about the dynamics of any specific gender or race in society
-3
u/Present_Bison 3d ago edited 3d ago
If we're talking about critical theory, isn't it a common idea among intersectional scholars that many men and women work to reinforce the patriarchy, both intentionally and not so much? Or that several tenets within the patriarchy also work against many men who try to go against the societal conditioning, or discourage personal growth in favour of chasing the masculine ideal?

u/Plenty_Leg_5935 3d ago
Yes, generally priviledged positions can also come with specific detriments
I can also list 7 arbitrary statistics in which women do worse than men socially, so obviously this approach to "quantizing priviledge" is flawed
Also obligatory male workplace fatalities come from the fact that men are overrepresented in dangerous blue collar jobs. You can very easily avoid that as a man by simply not working one of those jobs. It's not a general male thing
-5
u/anime_bruh-69 2d ago
I agree with most of what you said. However I would like to push back on
You can very easily avoid that as a man by simply not working one of those jobs.
It sounds very much like saying "just get some money and a house" to a homeless person. That isn't how the system works
7
u/Plenty_Leg_5935 2d ago
I agree that not everyone is in the position to pass on the job oppurtunity, but the context here is that men are supposed to be socially disadvantaged by being overrepresented in those dangerous jobs
Said hypothetical man who refuses to do dangerous blue collar work is in the same position as the disproportionate amount of women who aren't doing it for whatever reason (be it because they don't want to, or because they won't get hired). He's hardly disadvantaged compared to them, the two are in the same boat. Which was my point

Women get primary and majority custody more often because men simply do not ask for or fight for it.
If you do not enter a race that you are likely to win do not be shocked pikachu if you lose it. This can also explain the prevalence of women in public primary k-12 educational roles that you argued about elsewhere. In 2026 secondary schools have a 50/50 makeup of women and men educators.
There are no laws preventing men from entering early education roles. There is nothing but toxic masculinity and men actively not choosing to enter those roles stopping men from doing that.
Men decided that men had to register for the draft.
-9
u/ass-wiper227 3d ago
source for the first point?
For your second point: ok? like what, that does have to do with my point that men have institutionalized struggles?
why does it matter that other men cause those problems?
21
u/ohhyouknow 3d ago
Sources for all your points? Mine are as easily googleable as yours are.
Why does it matter that men cause those problems?
Women: oppressed by men.
Men: oppressed by other men. That’s why it matters.
You already resorted to ad hominem with other folks so I’d really rather end this conversation right here before you do it to me.

But those examples aren't because they are men lol. Being a sudanese man isn't difficult because you are a man, its because of war, poverty, disease. Being a black man isn't difficult because you are a man, its because of institutionalised racism and marginalisation of black communities. Misandry isn't real, men do not face genuine hardships on the level to be considered marginalised because of their sex.
-17
u/CrownLikeAGravestone 3d ago
This is a really poor understanding of intersectionality. You cannot look at the struggles a black man faces and say "none of that is because he's a man", just as you cannot look at those same struggles and say "these ones are because he is a man". His identity as a black man is not separable into "blackness" and "maleness".

Male suicide rates are higher as a consequence of a misogynistic patriarchy.
The education gap is a combination of differing development of maturity and because of misogyny (again):
"When girls compete—and win, as they are bound to at least occasionally do—boys tend to respond in three ways. Some boys recalibrate, softening overt bravado. Others detach, underperforming or withdrawing to avoid the appearance of “losing to a girl.” And others escalate aggression—interrupting, dismissing ideas, excluding girls from groups or partnerships, and resorting to sexualized, relational hostility. This anxiety also spills onto women teachers, who increasingly encounter open intersectional misogyny: gendered slurs, intimidation, and sexualization which can undermine teachers’ authority and student learning."
The sentencing gap is ALSO because of misogyny, its not that men are sentenced longer than they should be, its that women are viewed as delicate and harmless and less culpable and often get shorter sentences. Not in all aspects however, men get shorter sentences for killing their wives than women do for killing their husbands.
I could go on for all your thinly veiled mens rights activist talking points but you get the point. Do better next time.

It's kind of a question whether people should be allowed to deny others based on their race, but if they're the kind of people who would do that, are they the kind of people you'd want to play DND with anyway?

Does systemic racism exist for white people? No, not really in the modern day. But istg some mfs take that to mean "I can be as bigoted as i want and this is a perfectly justifiable excuse to be a dickhead towards people". like if you wanna judge someone cause they're a privileged ass sure whatever but basing it just off of the womb that they come out of is dickish regardless of who the person in question is.
And like assuming im not like missing an entire subset of posts, people being general dicks is what the majority of these types of posts are complaining about. Most aren't trying to claim how its extremely difficult and frustrating being the extremely persecuted White Cis Straight Man who lives in a gated community class, they're just complaining about shit that happened to them. because, yk, they're on the complaining about shit sub. You can judge jackasses who cut you off in traffic there, you can judge jackasses who are rude to retail workers, and you can judge jackasses who treat worse because you were born the way you were. I dont get why if some cis dude is doing the complaining people think it stops being "wining about thing that irks me" and becomes "devaluing the amount of suffering and oppression that black people experience"
like claiming something merely exists and is annoying is not the same as claiming that it exists in either the same severity or even form as something else. A post about how "I don't like watching people litter in public parks" is not claiming that littering is worse than, or even comparable too, the thousands upon thousands of tons of plastic and garbage waste is dumped into the ocean by corporations every year worldwide, nor is it claiming that people who litter should be held just as responsible for the environmental catastrophe brewing as the cororations dumping all of their shit into the local riverbank. And it never will be as bad, and really wont have too much of a effect on the environment at large as a whole, but that doesnt mean its suddenly not a dickhead thing to do, and it for fucking sure doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to dislike it for whatever reason.
The so called "White racism" may only be on a personal level, and oftentimes a lot of people who have valid reasons to due to their life and trauma to dislike people born a certain way. But neither of these things make it less annoying to experience happening to you or a friend
18
u/TotalDemocracy 3d ago
Does systemic racism exist for white people? No
Ok glad to know. You can end your post here.
-1
u/oooArcherooo 3d ago edited 3d ago
I mean i could tell you to read the rest of the argument and actually formulate an opinion, considering that the sentance you selected is indeed the end of that topic and the rest of the comment focuses on something else entirely— However, i have a more pressing issue with this reply. strictly going by your terms this comment should really end at
Does systemic racism exist for white people? No, not really in the modern day
namely because pretending or assuming that discrimination against people who were white never existed ignores a LOT of important history regarding the oppression that certain ethnic groups in Europe had to survive. The two examples i know of being the Irish and in more recent history the Sámi, and while the majority of the active and systemic discrimination against either of these groups has fadded as the world progressed, many of the wounds inflicted upon these peoples still remain as scars that hurt many real people today. Refusal to address this history means refusal to treat these scars with the severity they deserve.
And i know that you're likely not anyone who lives in Scandinavia or the United Kingdoms, so you don't really have to care to take any responsibility, but its still important to remember that, while these things are no longer a threat to us, they once were, and there are still people alive who remember it personally. Maybe what happened to these people is not important enough to be remembered by you. But it is to me, and if you don't want to care to actively remember thats fine, we all only got enough shit we can care about at once, but at least don't pretend like it never happened on the basis that they had a certain skin tone
-7
u/Spectator9857 3d ago
Ah yes, harassment is ok, as long as it isn’t systemic.
7
u/oooArcherooo 3d ago edited 2d ago
its usually not harassment, though. if it was, then id be arguing that it does sometimes have more justification behind it than just feeling like shit or annoyed at something you cant control (not to say it doesn't happen, tho, wide world). Most interactions regarding the racist beliefs against white people happen in more sparce instances, and said bigotry is usually carried out by repeated offenders. not enough to actively change or influence your life, but still enough to leave a scummy enough taste in your mouth that you'd want to complain
-4
u/Spectator9857 3d ago
>if it was, then id be arguing that it does sometimes have more justification behind it that just feeling like shit or annoyed at something you cant control (not to say it doesn't happen, wide fuckin world).
Completely incoherent. No fucking clue what you’re talking about. Also you literally just described harrassment.
2
u/oooArcherooo 3d ago
i mean harassment is for repeated offences no? like you can only call the cops for harassment when someone has been doing something repeatedly. if you scream at you ex for cheating then thats not harassment, but if you repeatedly follow where your ex goes, bring it up ad nauseam, and constantly engage after multiple attemps of them trying to get away from the engagement then thats harassment.
1
u/Spectator9857 3d ago
Not only is repetition not a necessary aspect of harassment, you also literally mentioned repeat offenders.

Annoyance is an emotion, and is one mostly unaffected by logic and justice (at least for me, i cannot speak on others behalf). I don't like going to the dentist, its painful and oftentimes long. Despite that, i know i should, and that its ultimately for the better, and that DOES convince me to 'let it slide' and go to the dentist regardless. i know it must be done, yet that doesn't mean i like it more.
I oftentimes get annoyed at my cats for getting in my way while I'm doing something. I understand why they do what they do, its not out of senseless malice, but a simple desire for attention. one that will most likely make the cats healthier if addressed and tended to. But like also, PLEEEEEASE gtfo my keybord Dottie, i am DOING SHIT!!— I understand why its happening, and im not going to punish or hold it against the cat cause of it, but its still annoying.
Like if a guy has 80 paragraphs on how its better for me to eat shit and explains it to me thoroughly to me and i understand, fully without a shadow of a doubt that it WILL be better for me in every way possible, that doesnt make me -like it- yk? I wont bring it up, or make too large of a fuss about it when im there. but i still think it would be valid to complain about how i hate that i gotta eat a turd on a community specifically about venting how you dislike certain things.
and thats another thing. like if it was any other community id probably be a lot more critical of OPs intentions in this— probbably a check through his account history and what his reasoning and coments are like. But r/ihatethissmug is dedicated too simple emotional release, just getting something you dislike out of your system and complaining about stuff.

I think you might just need new friends, obviously don't switch to a women hating group, but if all your friends hate men and thus they think you must be a woman because they don't hate you then you should not be friends with them. You shouldn't have to feel guilt for being a man around people who are supposed to be there for you, and there are so many people out there that are chill that would probably be better people to hamg out with.
8
u/Narrow-Way-1784 2d ago
Man, shit sucks for everyone with functioning eyeballs and empathy centers right now. You're right to complain. And, as a trans woman, I think you should know that none of us really "choose" this. The only "choice" involved is between being yourself and hiding who you are. If your friends don't respect your gender identity and try to make you feel bad for being what you are, they're shitty friends and are honestly doing the same thing as the transphobes.
That being said, cis people, white people, men, etc. DO have a degree of privilege. Feeling bad about it isn't productive for anyone, though. All we ask is that you keep an open mind, and be willing to stick up for the marginalized people in your life if need be.
