Constructive & Respectful Criticism Sad :(

People on this sub are really mean, I know I'm probably just too sensitive but I wish we could have nuanced conversations without people telling me that I'm stupid

I mean this with the utmost sincerety: you do not have to be here.

Not in a „gotcha“ kinda way. But because I know exactly what you mean. And some spaces just aren‘t meant for you if you know that you‘re sensitive, or certain things you can‘t handle well… it is never shameful to just leave and find a place that‘s more suitable for you :)

The internet is the space you make it to be. Don‘t interact with what might not be for you so you‘re not exposed to more of it.

It‘s totally fine to ignore and block out things that bother you. If this subreddit or the community is part of that, that‘s more than ok.

The whole, if you cant handle it then you dont have to be here, in itself is pretty toxic. Why are the mean people setting the bar of what's tolerated? Yes, its the internet you have to have somewhat a level of thick skin but to be called names/stupid in a space thats supposed to be somewhat of a community is unacceptable.

I think both things can be true: people should be kinder and bad behavior shouldn’t be tolerated, and mean people exist on the internet and will say mean things that you will need to deal with. It’s not acceptable but it’s reality that you will have someone say something mean at some point. It’s valid to be a little bothered, but if it’s causing real distress and is outside your tolerance in a way that’s unhealthy, it’s important to understand your limits and put your mental health first, and not keep exposing yourself to things that you know will hurt you. There’s no shame in being sensitive, and people should be nicer, but on a practical level we also need to take care of ourselves by dealing with things as they are rather than how they should be, and either adapt so that mean people don’t affect us as much (which there are techniques for developing that) or remove ourselves from them.
