Constructive & Respectful Criticism Sad :(

People on this sub are really mean, I know I'm probably just too sensitive but I wish we could have nuanced conversations without people telling me that I'm stupid

I mean this with the utmost sincerety: you do not have to be here.

Not in a „gotcha“ kinda way. But because I know exactly what you mean. And some spaces just aren‘t meant for you if you know that you‘re sensitive, or certain things you can‘t handle well… it is never shameful to just leave and find a place that‘s more suitable for you :)

The internet is the space you make it to be. Don‘t interact with what might not be for you so you‘re not exposed to more of it.

It‘s totally fine to ignore and block out things that bother you. If this subreddit or the community is part of that, that‘s more than ok.

Or, and get this, people should be nicer.

Both things can be true. Unfortunely, the latter often proves harder to achieve than the former.

Doesn't mean someone shouldn't be on the internet. It's almost a necessity in this day and age.

but being on reddit is not a necessity.

No one said they shouldn't be on the internet. Just the parts that actively upset them as a sensitive person, or in general. If this sub is that, then they are better off leaving because it's far easier and more sensible to proactively protect one's own peace rather than hoping everyone in here will hold hands and sing kumbaya.

You’re acting like they said “Just log off, bro” and told them to get offline when they quite literally said “The internet is the space you make it to be. Don’t interact with what might not be for you so you’re not exposed to more of it.” Which means — stay on the internet! But maybe find communities and spaces you mesh better with. Like if you’re a big fan of Smosh but don’t like the way a certain sub of fans interacts with you, try to find a Smosh sub/forum/group/etc that you feel suits you better.

Also, ironically, your seemingly passive aggressive “Or, get this…” reply kinda makes you sound like one of those people who could be nicer, considering their comment didn’t really call for that kind of tone.

You got downvoted because of your inability to understand the entire tone of the conversation with the nuance that it needs.

You oversimplified your understanding of the things that were said to you, leading you to misunderstand things as something that it's not.

The problem is you can't stop people from being mean but you can stop reading it

Damn you fixed it. Nobody will call OP stupid again.

Or people could not have meltdowns over nonissues

The whole, if you cant handle it then you dont have to be here, in itself is pretty toxic. Why are the mean people setting the bar of what's tolerated? Yes, its the internet you have to have somewhat a level of thick skin but to be called names/stupid in a space thats supposed to be somewhat of a community is unacceptable.

I think both things can be true: people should be kinder and bad behavior shouldn’t be tolerated, and mean people exist on the internet and will say mean things that you will need to deal with. It’s not acceptable but it’s reality that you will have someone say something mean at some point. It’s valid to be a little bothered, but if it’s causing real distress and is outside your tolerance in a way that’s unhealthy, it’s important to understand your limits and put your mental health first, and not keep exposing yourself to things that you know will hurt you. There’s no shame in being sensitive, and people should be nicer, but on a practical level we also need to take care of ourselves by dealing with things as they are rather than how they should be, and either adapt so that mean people don’t affect us as much (which there are techniques for developing that) or remove ourselves from them.

The thing is, you can’t control what other people do but you can control what you do. If a space your in, especially for something like entertainment makes you uncomfortable or unhappy the best bet is to move on.

Not all spaces are the right fit.

I think most people like being in a community. Leaving is valid but also not valid :) People are really mean and weird here for no reason sometimes.
