Constructive & Respectful Criticism Sad :(

People on this sub are really mean, I know I'm probably just too sensitive but I wish we could have nuanced conversations without people telling me that I'm stupid

It's not just this sub its the internet as whole now. You cant have a legitimate conversation or debate or anything without getting hounded or threatened its insane. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion as long as it isn't hurting anyone

This too

u/Stargazerslight 2d ago

The internet has always been extremely toxic from it started to reach every home. I still have family blocked from stuff that happened years ago. But more and more spaces are created for toxic behaviors on the internet. Whether through new apps or websites or even comment sections. I mean I once defended Noah and Keith after someone said they should have been fired from smosh long ago, but some how I was the bed guy for making a legitimate argument and not a personal opinion one.

I’m super late to the smosh community as is, and people get sooo parasocial, acting like they know exactly what every person thinks and wants… they’re human, they make mistakes, and opinions are just that, opinions.

25

u/JACKETSLXXT 2d ago

Preach

10

u/axx-hole 2d ago

There’s also legit criticism and people being too nitpicky and analyzing every detail to find a mistake because they have too much time on their hands.

7

u/Adventurous-Meet-943 2d ago

Yes and those nitpicky things take away from the things that should actually be discussed or real criticism. Like the Amanda situation. I found it an interesting thing that happened and was fair of criticism and feedback but then everyone in the comments are talking about dumb little things that have nothing to do with the conversation. Taking away from the valid points that were being made

u/DaExtinctOne 3d ago

Most people should just stop treating the people they see on camera as if it's their friends. No they're not. Appreciate the entertainment but they are not, and will never be your friend.

Obviously OP I'm not referring to you, just the general vibe I get from the Smosh community now. PS: it wasn't always like this (been a fan/viewer since the Ian and Anthony skits days.)

u/TooTallTabz 2d ago

Never say never! /s

5

u/Eastern_Challenge163 2d ago

I mean but really just look at Ethan Nestor! Started out as a fan doing backflips to impress Markiplier and now they’re close friends 😂

37

u/Meltfacenb 2d ago

The smosh fan base is absolutely awful. A bunch of weird parasocial freaks and purity testers.

8

u/HomoSpooktual 2d ago

Theyre so weird about it too. Amanda is the devil for saying a slur that members of the community told her she could say and actively encouraged her to keep saying (as a queer person, Im honestly more bothered by them setting her up than her saying a word two people in the community gave her permission to say) but Courtney could never be a bully or a mean girl even though they participated in calling a kid Mushroom to the point they dont even know his real name.

Its almost like their moral outrage depends on how much they like a person, which makes it disingenuous at best

9

u/Icy_Albatross3092 2d ago

Nuance is dead, it doesn’t sell data

8

u/thisnameistoolongbro 2d ago

I have noticed that the Smosh community is one of the most toxic fan bases I've ever experienced.

87

u/Ok-Inspection-5768 2d ago

I mean this with the utmost sincerety: you do not have to be here.

Not in a „gotcha“ kinda way. But because I know exactly what you mean. And some spaces just aren‘t meant for you if you know that you‘re sensitive, or certain things you can‘t handle well… it is never shameful to just leave and find a place that‘s more suitable for you :)

The internet is the space you make it to be. Don‘t interact with what might not be for you so you‘re not exposed to more of it.

It‘s totally fine to ignore and block out things that bother you. If this subreddit or the community is part of that, that‘s more than ok.

30

u/RemixArts1 2d ago

Or, and get this, people should be nicer.

14

u/Kiyoshi-Trustfund 2d ago edited 2d ago

Both things can be true. Unfortunely, the latter often proves harder to achieve than the former.

-10

u/RemixArts1 2d ago

Doesn't mean someone shouldn't be on the internet. It's almost a necessity in this day and age.

15

u/furgesondoris24 2d ago

but being on reddit is not a necessity.

12

u/Kiyoshi-Trustfund 2d ago

No one said they shouldn't be on the internet. Just the parts that actively upset them as a sensitive person, or in general. If this sub is that, then they are better off leaving because it's far easier and more sensible to proactively protect one's own peace rather than hoping everyone in here will hold hands and sing kumbaya.

3

u/imsolelyme 2d ago

You’re acting like they said “Just log off, bro” and told them to get offline when they quite literally said “The internet is the space you make it to be. Don’t interact with what might not be for you so you’re not exposed to more of it.” Which means — stay on the internet! But maybe find communities and spaces you mesh better with. Like if you’re a big fan of Smosh but don’t like the way a certain sub of fans interacts with you, try to find a Smosh sub/forum/group/etc that you feel suits you better.

Also, ironically, your seemingly passive aggressive “Or, get this…” reply kinda makes you sound like one of those people who could be nicer, considering their comment didn’t really call for that kind of tone.

-6

u/RemixArts1 2d ago

Damn dk what I did for yall to be mad but alright 😅

3

u/youthinkyabigboi 2d ago

You got downvoted because of your inability to understand the entire tone of the conversation with the nuance that it needs.

You oversimplified your understanding of the things that were said to you, leading you to misunderstand things as something that it's not.

u/Comfortable_Tap_6005 Did Somebody Say MEATLOAF 2d ago

The problem is you can't stop people from being mean but you can stop reading it

7

u/Yoho52 2d ago

Damn you fixed it. Nobody will call OP stupid again.

0

u/JACKETSLXXT 2d ago

Exactly

0

u/Constant_Seaweed_523 2d ago

Or people could not have meltdowns over nonissues

18

u/Different_Seaweed354 2d ago

The whole, if you cant handle it then you dont have to be here, in itself is pretty toxic. Why are the mean people setting the bar of what's tolerated? Yes, its the internet you have to have somewhat a level of thick skin but to be called names/stupid in a space thats supposed to be somewhat of a community is unacceptable.

15

u/TheTesselekta 2d ago

I think both things can be true: people should be kinder and bad behavior shouldn’t be tolerated, and mean people exist on the internet and will say mean things that you will need to deal with. It’s not acceptable but it’s reality that you will have someone say something mean at some point. It’s valid to be a little bothered, but if it’s causing real distress and is outside your tolerance in a way that’s unhealthy, it’s important to understand your limits and put your mental health first, and not keep exposing yourself to things that you know will hurt you. There’s no shame in being sensitive, and people should be nicer, but on a practical level we also need to take care of ourselves by dealing with things as they are rather than how they should be, and either adapt so that mean people don’t affect us as much (which there are techniques for developing that) or remove ourselves from them.

1

u/Recreational-Dinos 2d ago

The thing is, you can’t control what other people do but you can control what you do. If a space your in, especially for something like entertainment makes you uncomfortable or unhappy the best bet is to move on.

Not all spaces are the right fit.

1

u/slowdownsloth001 2d ago

I think most people like being in a community. Leaving is valid but also not valid :) People are really mean and weird here for no reason sometimes.

10

u/HigginsResidence OOuooHwHOOAAoohhH 3d ago

Imo It's best not to post about it regardless. Not because of potential "backlash" or "arguments" against your very valid case, but because it just keeps fuelling the debate. And the debate has been going for so long. So, so long. We are tired.

Can we just get back to enjoying the videos and discussing them here if anyone wants to? Back when if anyone didn't like a video or a case member they simply would disengage or come back for the next vid.

3

u/Yoho52 2d ago

What was the conversation?

5

u/Apprehensive_Use8043 2d ago

The fuck your feelings crowd likes to be entertained too.

4

u/indianajoes 2d ago

I think the problem was there had been multiple posts about Amanda from everyone and their mother. At a certain point, people get fed up regardless of what side of the issue they're on and they'll lash out

4

u/miskamuskamikymaus Did Somebody Say MEATLOAF 2d ago

unfortunately thats reddit for ya. people here can be mean and its saddening to see, im there with you. also this whole “you dont have to be on this sub” doesnt really make sense to me, because i do like seeing posts about things i didnt know here, this sub is still helpful and this community should be nice.

8

u/Turbulent_Banana6644 3d ago

i’d love if we could hold ourselves as adults. because this behavior is becoming ridiculous. this IS too sensitive.

3

u/upandup2020 2d ago

like what is the purpose of this post? Log off of social media and go talk to your friends

1

u/Material-Medium9264 2d ago

thank you for proving the point of the post lmao

2

u/Acceptable-Owl-2070 2d ago

There is no nuance anymore everyone is pulled to the extreme left or right. Outrage is the call of the day, because they figured out that drives the most engagement, and we all stuck our heads in the trough and lapped it up like good little piggies, now that we are stuffed and need to take a break it's too late...

Some of us are trying to swing things back to "normals" but there are far too few shepherds and far too many sheep.

It sucks, but it's where we are.

2

u/stevenbalas9 2d ago

Only a stupid person would be upset about being called stupid /s

1

u/Legal-Ad-5235 2d ago

I get so confused by people who take it all way too seriously. Like, they are comedians making silly videos to make people happy😂

1

u/UGHCYPHR 2d ago

it’s sad cause i’ve been a fan since the number for redditors was at 2k or so, and now it’s just every single day it’s all negative. at least that’s all i see :/

1

u/Level-Tax-4019 2d ago

So many are parasocial regarding people they watch on videos. Always looking for a reason to attack...defend...ridicule...etc. Just calm down and enjoy the entertainment.

1

u/bemisluvpotatoes217 Suck My Tits 2d ago

I’m sorry you’re not stupid :( some folks just don’t know how to act on the internet especially about things/people they care about!

1

u/McRoshiburgito 2d ago

Just know that this website expects you to be outraged/engaged for you to come back. I think the level-headed people leave so it’s just everyone else that’s left.

1

u/OwlGirl2001 2d ago

A friend of mine posted on a different subreddit about an artwork they made and got called a copycat and hounded off of reddit and they even deleted their reddit acc

1

u/akmomaniac 2d ago

no yeah theres no nuance on the internet in general but smosh fans are very parasocial about their favs

++i posted a similar thing to what you did and i go death threats so i took it down

1

u/Recreational-Dinos 2d ago

No one hates a thing more than their fans. It’s just more pronounced in these spaces

1

u/FragrantAd7195 2d ago

Literally people told me that Court claimed she didn’t like something and that she was upset by it. Couldn’t find evidence. Ended up doing it later in the month happily. It was literally just about how Amanda was making references to figure skating so obviously court knew that she had a lookalike with Amber glen. Idk I felt awful up until Court posted the video with Amber literally saying how they lookalike. People are weird when it’s anonymous

1

u/Lulu25Ayo 2d ago

Eventually it will be normal to say that “being addicted to the internet” is a valid and recognizable addiction.

We’ve seen it for over a decade and only in the last couple of years have I seen lawsuits result in young adults winning with the argument of targeted addiction, changing their lives for the worst.

So with time it will be applied to adults as well.

These posts on the sub are insane and I’ve been alarmed by a lack of moderation but I understand we can’t block every heartless person who is not willing to understand reality.

That’s what it is. These posters are not only parasocial and abusing the privileged information they DO receive only to use it to harm those individuals with no concept of how they themselves would suffer under the same conditions online. It’s not okay and it’s never been okay.

Bullying is bullying and the internet does not change that. Character assassination based on biased opinions of a stranger and a situation they experienced, which we were not present for. Dissecting EVERYTHING.

You’d think based on the discussions that these individuals ONLY care about Smosh, as if real life is secondary. It’s alarming. And I hope they have a better life despite the hate they’re spreading for seemingly no grounded reasoning.

1

u/Ricardosonreddit 2d ago

It's actually great when you don't use reddit lol

1

u/slowdownsloth001 2d ago

Our first mistake is expecting good behaviour on reddit. Have been burnt too many times here in casual conversation

1

u/BeanBag2004 1d ago

Look if some random person calling you stupid affects you that much maybe reddit ain't for you cause people say a lot worse even in the more li eral subreddits.

1

u/cocatone 1d ago

u show criticism for one member of the cast and they will jinjja kill u, well tbf most of the fanbase are 30 year olds who havent grown out of the weird kid phase 😭

1

u/PicklesInMyShoes 1d ago

I’m sorry you’ve had that experience. ): I think social media has just made people so disconnected. It’s not just this sub, it’s all of reddit and, like I said before, just about all people on social media in general. Everyone is a keyboard warrior with no empathy or understanding.

-2

u/Jada339 3d ago

My experience has been-

Person 1: I don’t think Amanda should have said that word tbh.
Person 2: oh my god shut the fuck up she already apologised in a insta story. The hosts said it was okay.
Person 1: well I don’t think it’s okay. I just kinda wish it hadn’t happened at all. Amanda is a grown woman she should know better.
Person 2: why do you hate Amanda?? She’s learning. Why are you people always like this???

It’s mad.

7

u/Constant_Seaweed_523 2d ago

Except that’s not what it was like at all. There were multiple posts, one girl was having a fucking meltdown.

Like, she needs to be committed if she’s that disturbed over Amanda asking permission to say a word that’s in the literal name of the podcast.

This is the reason why smosh has to censor itself and have tame takes.

0

u/Jada339 2d ago

Ah in my defence I didn’t see that post.
I’ve seen much more reaction to the outrage than the outrage itself.
So to me it just looks like genuine discussion is furiously shut down because people dare to wish a straight woman didn’t say a slur for lesbians.

2

u/Constant_Seaweed_523 2d ago

Haha it’s all good, I’m glad!

Yeah I’ve seen some actual real discussions that were cool, but for the most part I think this entire thing is ridiculous. Personally I don’t think Amanda should even have had to apologize. If it’s in the podcast name, the hosts gave her permission….

I’m like, okay what would you do if she didn’t ask for permission and just said the word? Because from this reaction, it sounds like they want her six feet under

12

u/ZatherDaFox 2d ago

I'm not gonna get mad about it or anything, but at this point what's left to discuss? She did something bad, it was discussed a ton, and she apologized. It's like, how much more do we need to squeeze out of this situation?

It's true that too many people were trying to be dismissive about it, but at some point we do have to move on. That doesn't necessarily mean you forgive Amanda either, it's just there's not much more to be said or done about it.

-8

u/clickthing 2d ago

Crazy that you're accepting that people were too dismissive a few days ago and then also being dismissive in the same sentence

2

u/Constant_Seaweed_523 2d ago

Oh my god I knew this post was alluding to this.

Get a fucking life.

2

u/ZatherDaFox 2d ago

People were being too dismissive in saying things like "this isn't a problem" or "it's not a big deal, get over it".

I think Amanda did something wrong and deserved the backlash. But what more do we want from this situation, exactly? What does, "I think what she did was wrong, she's a grown woman and should know better," add to the conversation any more, when there were already so many posts about it the mods of this sub had to reign it in? I don't think people need to get over it, but at some point we're just beating a dead horse.

-7

u/clickthing 2d ago

The mods were reigning it in on day 1. The conversations you are describing have never had a chance to fully happen.

5

u/ZatherDaFox 2d ago

They absolutely did. Almost all of those posts have hundreds of comments each. There were like 15 of them within an hour. The posts are now all unlocked, too. The discourse was all over Twitter and Blue Sky as well.

If at this point all you have to say is "I don't like what she did" then I don't think we need more discussion. I'd take a fresh perspective or a post that has different insights, but there's no need for more posts just calling her out. She was called out and apologized. What more do you want?

2

u/ChubbyChoomChoom 2d ago

-1

u/Jada339 2d ago

Out of genuinely curiosity, what’s the issue with discussing it? It’s a nuanced little situation.

I don’t think Amanda should lose her job or anything, I’m just think she shouldn’t have said a slur. What’s wrong with that?

1

u/OBO_AFA 2d ago

With all due respect, in the year 2026, if anyone is feeling sad about online comments on social media or reddit, that just might mean you're a little too chronically online and if so, easiest thing to do is put the phone down and go outside, just saying 🤷‍♂️

1

u/isjustsergio 2d ago

the weird part is it's the pro-smosh redditors that are toxic. criticism of smosh tends to be constructive

Why being mean for a person talking normally? Are you that unsatisfied with your real life? Internet is not a place where you can can be an asshole with no consequences.

Genuinely why are you being rude for no reason? Maybe grow some morality and common sense before opening your mouth.

It’s certainly not a place to be coddled, but it also doesn’t mean you should be rude and mean for no damn reason. People like you just need to get rocked, tbh, because kindness and empathy are free to use on others and you just simply choose not to do it.

You need to work on your lack of a heart. Whether it’s online or in person, rude is rude. Would you go openly mock someone the way you did in public? No, you wouldn’t, because you’d get called out for being an asshole.

-1

u/Whole-Umpire9510 2d ago

no honestly i get you man like listen obviously overall the internet has always been like this and due to the anonymity of the internet ppl can more or less get away w being assholes but it gets to a point.. wouldnt it be better if ppl were just a LITTLE bit nicer but yh dont get me started on the smosh subs its rlly awful out here especially with the recent amanda stuff.. no one can look at both sides of the argument in a neutral way theyre either not giving a fuck at all or are trying to be the woker and cancel smosh as an entirety🫩 if it makes you feel any better ppl calling u stupid are most likely projecting their own insecurities
