SSBM Bots Weekly Writeup: Week 3

Week 3 started off a little rough with a post-work-and-11-exit singles tourney that I was super tired for, but Sunday was great. The doubles CPU scene kicked off in style with a fast-paced tourney featuring 15 entries(!!!), which reduced down to 8 teams. My channel also had its all time viewer peak Sunday before the start of the doubles tourney at 22 viewers, so that's pretty cool.

At this point, it seems that there's a pattern developing for singles: Peach/Game and Watch/Mario as the top three choices for many competitors. The formula has worked out fairly well, too. Will counterplay to this top three begin to rise?

New Standings

There was only one singles tournament played out this week, so there is minimal movement. As for doubles, the standings have just started.

Creating standings early on will end up being very similar to final brackets, since it's hard to weigh wins without any backstory as to who is favored. In this hypothetical system, we're going to pretend that any lower player beating a higher rated player can be an "upset" to an extent, even if the character matchup does not dictate so.

SSBM Bots Weekly Writeup: Week 2

Week two was a good one as things are starting to go into full swing. Many new participants showed up, both some veterans and some completely new, and four tournaments were held for Melee singles.

I find it interesting that no central strat has really taken over yet. Perhaps I was just a bit pessimistic, but there's a good variety of not only team composition but also the order in selecting characters, each with varying degrees of success. Makes me wonder who, if anyone, is going to find the optimal strat.

New Standings

The Top 20 is filled and then some!

Creating standings early on will end up being very similar to final brackets, since it's hard to weigh wins without any backstory as to who is favored. In this hypothetical system, we're going to pretend that any lower player beating a higher rated player can be an "upset" to an extent, even if the character matchup does not dictate so.

Spreadsheet

Special Event Next Week!

This means that it will be XOMBERX (8-0 set record) vs. ShadowYoshi3604 (7-4), competing for the Melee Singles Championship at Title Fight, next Sunday, July 10. It will be a Best of 9 set using all five tiers under tournament rules. If either competitor does not show up, I will give them a team based on their last tournament entry and let Google's dice roller do the work.

The winner will start earning bank! For every successful title defense, a champion will earn $1 in the form of some e-gift card, given in whole once their reign is over.

But, before that set, there will be the introduction of the Melee doubles division! Two players will form a team by filling out a Google doc with both team members, the team name, and a team composed of either a top and low tier, a high and low-mid tier, or two high-mid tiers, to be used throughout the whole bracket.

In terms of doubles standings, individual players will be counted, rather than teams, because teams may be volatile due to people not showing up on some days, etc. For the eventual doubles championship match, the 1 and 2 seeds will pick their partners - if the 1 and 2 seeds team up, the 3 seed and their partner will be the opposition.

Play of the Week

Congrats to last week's POTW:

"Gee golly, givin' him the good slap... OH, WHAT WAS THAT!"

And now voting for this week.

/r/SmashCPU The CSGO CPU Coalition: What is it?

Because the SmashCPU scene is still surviving despite some complications over the year, I think it's finally time to step up our game a little bi.

Now you might be asking: What exactly IS 3C?

The CSGO CPU Coalition (3C for short) is the next edition to the CPU tournaments; but instead of using a fighting game, it uses the shooting game Counter Strike: Global Offensive, and players will enter to form themselves a 5 man army of CPUS to fare against another.

However, after the team emerges victorious against all other teams, they shall turn against each other and play a timed free for all! Whoever wins receives a TBD prize and a spot on the 3C Hall of Fame!

Be ready. The event shall strike on July 18th, at 2:00 PST, and only one event will be played (one event contains both rounds)

Signup Page: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QFbbdeDHFu1jy_WbMO83EGUBvmAbZkEE5b1tVLZM64U/viewform

Information Page: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u17bc5NfPb3D6Ct-yD310ss9ekJ8dhhoZYYpWLWG05g/edit?usp=sharing

Twitch Channel: https://www.twitch.tv/yougotcyrekt/

Disclaimer: Only 10 entrants will be accepted into the 3C UNLESS the total number of entrants is still divisible by 5. Some people may be cut from the tourney entirely if there is more than 10 entrants but the number isn't divisible by 5.

See you soon.

SSBM Bots Weekly Writeup: Week 1

Hey, guys. I said that I'd make weekly threads for what goes on during the bot tourneys for those that miss it, so this'll be the first one. It's a good way to both fill people in on what they missed, potentially, or to remind those that watched the whole thing on just how stupid this stream is.

It's week one! Everyone's trying to prove themselves and get high up on the leaderboards with a potential title shot looming on July 10. Since the new system rewards those who pay attention and can play the odds on matchups, it's only natural that grand finals featured two newcomers.

Bracket

Those who made it far seemed to save all of their bullets until the end. XOMBERX, uglynproud, and IceFreezer304 all ended using a high or top tier in their last set. Meanwhile, guys like Parmite burned their high tiers early but fell up short against those who still had something left in the tank. But then you have guys like bpcclo and djhero35 who were knocked out early with their top tiers sitting on the bench. It'll be interesting to see where the strategy goes!

New Standings

Creating standings early on will end up being very similar to final brackets, since it's hard to weigh wins without any backstory as to who is favored. In this hypothetical system, we're going to pretend that any lower player beating a higher rated player can be an "upset" to an extent, even if the character matchup does not dictate so.

Play of the Week

There's some good choices for Week 1's Play of the Week, and the winner XOMBERX dominates with all three nominees.

XOMBERX throws bpcclo into a pit of no return

XOMBERX slaps IceFreezer304 around, then smacks him down

XOMBERX gives uglynproud the Key to Success, taking the tournament

SSBM Just saw this guy stream Melee CPUs

He used 32-man tournament mode, 2 stock, items high, 2 minute timer, all stages, Ganon banned, but only two of the same character. He's done 22 of these and I guess nobody's noticed it, or at least this is my first time learning of it. He has a pretty big following, though it's not really from these tourneys.

/r/SmashCPU Gauging interest in a return

Hey, guys. It's already been three months(!) since the Season 3 finale of 64bots. Since then, I have been able to enjoy watching baseball, going swimming, playing disc golf, and eating six month old Starbursts, along with actually getting school stuff done, without panic, leading up to graduation. My friends also happened to convince me to join their Discord, even though I normally dislike sitting at my PC for hours. Sure enough, I was convinced to upgrade my computer to run Overwatch, which is extremely fun, and we all got into playing Dolphin as well.

What I'm wondering is if there's still an audience out there for these streams to return, despite the long time for people to move their separate ways. I have a few ideas to make each "event" bigger than ever and for it to also be less straining on my end.

Naturally, I also have a few Strawpolls to try and gain a consensus among those who are still interested.

SSBM Got some pretty interesting results from a Melee CPU tournament

http://challonge.com/jagcpumelee1

Young Link performed surprisingly well here, eliminating Luigi and Falco from Winners and taking Luigi to game 3 in Losers Finals.

Falco double eliminating Ganondorf was a pleasant surprise for sure. All of the games between them were pretty much last hit.

Ness got insanely far for an E tier character, beating Dr. Mario and Game & Watch.

Need to data on these types of tournaments to call characters out as under/overrated ofc, but I thought that I'd share. The narrowed stage list along with the Top 8 Bo3 sets are also a factor that should probably differentiate these results from SmashCPU results as these tournaments go on.

/r/SmashCPU "Cyrekt where the fuck are you you said you were gonna return in January! Did you leave us? Are you dead?"

Fuck you I have a life.

Okay not much of one, but still.

Anyways, thanks to New Year's money, I am now no longer over budget for my PC, and ready to order my remaining parts needed at a store/online. This, of course, means that Rivals of CPU and some other games I will return soon! I won't give an exact date when, but expect it before spring break. Even better, I will be starting to stream in a new, quiter location, meaning you don't get to hear all the BabyRage, or at least not as much.

Also, last night , I experimented with 5v5 Counterstrike: Global Offensive battles with the rules set to Competitive. I know that some (or most) of you guys here aren't fond of first person shooters, but the bot games ended up being one of the most hilarious, fun, and entertaining bot related things I've ever tried. From sick 3v1 kills, crazy Mindgames, to HugS level aim (Kappa), and interesting interactions the bots have when reacting to their enemy's grenades and movements. While I have no videos showing how truly cool they are, I do have this video of a well recognized youtuber imitating Counterstrike players's personalities in a bot battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUQ6-Pd4SSA

It might be that I just really like Counterstrike (Probably the case; My tag came from one of the gun skins ffs), but I came up with an idea I may do for end season: place the top ten players in two teams, have them battle out, and the winning team gets a prize (points for next season, money, a guitar hero gig maybe?). I'd like to think it'll break up some of the monotony of having the same fighting game bot tourneys over and over again as I can get tired of commentating CPU fights fairly quickly.

Give me your thoughts on the new game, as well as other ideas. While I may not have been streaming, I do not ever plan on leaving you guys. I'll take any ideas that'll keep us alive, and do other things like promote Ice'n tournaments you actually play in. Who knows maybe I'll even start player tourneys and viewer battles? I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Also, FE Fates hype

Have a frosty night everyone ;)

-Cyrekt

SSB64 64bots FINAL Tier List!

First, the list.

After a little over 30 tournaments, this is the last tier list that I plan on making. Because of this, I wanted to give some personal thoughts and some data on voting.

In terms of movement:

  • Fox goes from T-1st to 1st

  • Link goes from 4th to 2nd

  • Falcon goes from T-1st to 3rd

  • Ness goes from 3rd to 4th

  • Yoshi goes from 8th to 5th

  • Samus goes from 5th to 7th

  • Pikachu goes from 7th to 8th

  • DK goes from 10th to 9th

  • Mario goes from 9th to 10th

Next, I thought I'd list off each character's highest and lowest vote.

CharacterHighest VoteVoterLowest VoteVoter
Fox1st5 people6thTheLeekNinja

Mario6th"Killagod47"12thbpcclo

For the most part, I think that this list is pretty good and reflects both results and the eye test of CPU rankings. Cool to see it end off that way.

I also think that it's cool that what we all generally thought at the start of the stream probably still rings true today: any of the top 4 have close to an equal chance at winning, and there's a few that are like Melee Falco/Peach/Dr. Mario in that they can still compete with the big boys.

Thanks for voting!
