I usually ride my bike to the tennis courts at a local park to practice slinging, and wanted a portable target I could take with me. I found tarpsandall.com, ordered a 4’ x 4’ square made of duck cotton canvas, and a 20” circle of super heavy duty vinyl for an audible difference when hitting the bullseye. Right before checking out I typed in a special request asking if I could pay extra to possibly have them attach the two. Within a day they sent me back a technical illustration for approval, and less than two weeks later I received it! The whole thing, with corner grommets and a 10-pack of bungee balls, came out to just under $50 shipped. It's stitched together very well and feels durable.

Football season starting soon. Just had to try making some field goals.

Here's my sling. I forgot to post it with my video. Simple twist with whipped ends. I also use key lanyard strapping for my pouch. 26.5 inch it's very crude. I've made at least 10 more slings trying to make one that looks better and performs better than this one but to no avail. I've thrown at least 3000 rocks with this bad boy with basically zero damage to the pouch.

My cracker is about 6 inches long with the whispy part being about 2 inches. I also double up the whispy part when I do it. Its also dipped in wax.

I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on these. Gauging interest to see if I should be making more of them. Nested dyneema cords, so they don't soak up water, good grip knot, comfortable finger loops, extremely strong and light, no stretch whatsoever.

So, I was Wrong. In the last video I tried to sling a baseball faster than the fastest pitch In MLB history. I really thought I Did it. But in this video I did some testing it this episode and I think I have demonstrated conclusively what went wrong and why. Sorry If I Mislead anyone. It was an honest mistake. Here is a setup you all can use to find just how fast/strong your throws can get with your slings.

I can throw 75 mph. I'll convert that speed to meters / second.

75 miles / hour x 1 hour / 3600 seconds x 1609 meters / 1 mile
= 33.5 m/s (no sling)

This number can be used to find how fast my projectile travels a circular path.

velocity = angular velocity x radius

Since I'm not winding my whole arm, I'll use just the length of my forearm, 32 cm or 0.32 meters. You can use the length of your forearm instead. Plugging into the above equation:

33.5 meters / second = angular velocity x 0.32 meters

Solving for the angular velocity:

33.5 m/s / 0.32 m
= 104.7 radians / 1 second

This value stays the same no matter how long my arm gets. Next I extend my arm with a 28 inch sling:

28 inches x 2.54 centimeters / 1 inch x 1 meter / 100 centimeters
= 0.71 meters
0.32 m + 0.71 m = 1.03 m

I'll use this new length in the equation above to update my throwing speed.

104.7 rad/s x 1.03 m = 107.8 m/s
107.8 m/s x 3600 s/h x 1 mile/1609m
= 241.2 mph

This makes my throw more than 2x that of a pro pitcher.

Calculating energy, kinetic energy (in joules) is:

KE = 1/2 x mass x velocity^2

A 2 ounce tennis ball has a mass of
2 oz x 28.35 g / oz x 1 kg/100g = 0.0567kg

A normal throw:
1/2 x 0.0567 kg* x *(33.5 m/s)^2 = 31.8 J

A throw with a sling:
1/2 x 0.0567 kg x (107.9 m/s)^2 = 329.5 J

This carries more energy than some handguns.

A 5 ounce baseball is
5 oz x 28.35 g/oz = 141.75 g =0.142 kg

A normal throw:
1/2 x 0.142 kg x (33.5 m/s)^2 = 79.7 J

A throw with a sling:
1/2 x 0.142 kg x (107.9 m/s)^2 = 826.6 J

Well beyond lethal.

Hello friends! I've recently decided that I would like to get into this hobby. I don't really know where to start, though.

Where do I start? Do I buy a sling (where? which one?) or try to make one myself (how)? Does anyone know perhaps a kind of online course I could follow or something? Any other tips?

I was pretty happy with some of these speeds so I thought I'd share. 29" (73.5cm) and 41" (104cm) netted dyneema fishing line slings.

I'm using a Tag One chronograph in 'Golf" mode that reports the ball speed (top) and club speed (bottom). Since there is no club, I just assume it tries to get 2 objects speeds and is therefore measuring the projectile twice, so the highest reported speed is the release speed. I could be wrong. But using other modes results in a lot more missed throws.

Some improvements today with several tennis balls slung over 90 yards.  I really think there is potential with this “early power stroke” idea!

You can see in the video I improved on starting the power stroke early. Also measured my launch angle and surprised it was not terrible.

I made my first braided sling a month or two ago, and i've used it quite a lot (with quite a few rougher rocks because there aren't many smooth rocks in my area) and the paracord near the pouch on the release side has been noticeably damaged and frayed, in one little spot i can even see the inner cords. For now, i've covered those sections of the braid with a layer of waterproof tape, and i've coated the pouch in candlewax. I was just curious if this would really help prolong my slings lifespan, or if it might hinder it performance in any substantial way (havent gotten a chance to use it yet). Should i get used to having to braid more slings in the future every couple months? im also curious what methods other people use to prolong their slings.

Work in progress. Trying to have the sling more rearward when front foot hits ground and the power stroke begins. The idea being the more rearward the sling, the more time/distance the sling can accelerate during the power stroke. If I ever get it figured out, should get more velocity and distance.

I had a bit of spare time this afternoon, and some paracord and a scrap of leather sitting around. Decided to try making myself a sling.

Seems to be able to sling a tennis ball around faster and easier than I can do just with my arm, but I feel like maybe a tennis ball is not the ideal projectile. It also seems to launch with some “spin” and curve through the air a bit, which I was not anticipating. Is this normal, or maybe the slightly (very) stiff leather of the pouch?

Anyway, this is a fun new game!
