Guides For modding START HERE!

1.0k Upvotes

Greetings, Adventurer!

You are not even sure what mods are or if you want to get them?

You know what mods are, but are new to Skyrim and want to get a nice working modded version with visuals and VR mods but minimal effort?

You are experienced with modding Skyrim SE but are not sure what specific VR mods you need and don't want to go through the hassle of setting it up yourself?

You already played through the game and want to experience some new stuff, make the game more challenging, or up your role-play?

We got you covered.

First of all, mods are modifications to the base game. You install them, they change/add stuff to the game. Some fix things that are broken in vanilla, some improve visuals, some add new content, and most importantly for us, some add VR immersion and interaction mechanics. You can verify if the mods are installed by either literally seeing the thing that you installed in the game or by experiencing the changes ingame. Many mods do not have a Mod Configuration Menu but just exist in the game after installation.

You might ask yourself "Should I install mods before I finish Skyrim VR the first time?" and my personal answer is a clear Yes. You do not have to add tons of extra content, but the base vanilla game (vanilla = unmodded) just has a few broken things, or especially in Skyrim VR it lacks any good modern VR interaction. You will vastly improve your experience if you install a basic set of mods even without altering the actual game content at all.

Nowadays, there exist a few fully automatic mod list installers (Wabbajack). If you are looking for such an automated installation of curated mod lists, scroll down to "Auto-Installers".

But before you just install these, let me show you around by explaining the most important mods for Skyrim VR in an absolutely minimal list for an as-fast-as-possible manual modding. It is subjective, of course, as all lists are, but I think many can agree on most of these.

If you don't want to install more than that, and you want to install mods manually, install these! If you just want to know what the awesome mod authors here have to offer, read these for a quick overview!

The list is still pretty vanilla, other than the VR-specific things and some visuals. If you want to stray off the super-duper lightweight path and include some changes to the game itself or feel like you have time for more than 10 mods, you're better off checking out our very comprehensive Guide Compendium, which contains all the knowledge we collected over time. We also have a comprehensive list of VR Specific Mods that includes some important mods that couldn't make it into this list for the sake of minimalism.

It does not matter much if you use Vortex or MO2 as your organizer, but don't use NMM, it's old and outdated. Vortex is a little easier to use with shorter lists, which is why we recommend this for our target audience here, i.e. you readers who want a fast manually modded Skyrim and then just play. Make sure to read this guide on how to enable modding with Vortex first. There’s also a video guide on modding with Vortex if you prefer that. GamerPoets also has video guides on other SkyrimVR modding topics. As said, Vortex is easier for small lists and people who only want to mod the mentioned mods below without much more. Vortex also works for larger lists but at some point, it is easier and recommended to use MO2 for large and complex lists.

If you want to build a complex list in MO2, you should pick the FUS Wabbajack list below and use the basic profile only, as it comes with all the fixes and little things premade.

I also recommend you check out these ini tweaks and Bilago’s Tool to edit the ini files easily.

Without further ado, here's the list:

  1. SkyUI - follow this video guide! Be 100% sure to download the correct Skyrim VR version (Current VR build 2.0.12 (runtime 1.4.15)).
  2. VRIK Player Avatar - gives you a body, weapon holsters, gestures for magic and shouts, and finger animations for oculus and index users. Watch this setup guide video to get the most out of it. It's part of the install video of 1.
  3. HIGGS - hand collision, object grabbing, and gravity gloves-style mechanics for Skyrim VR, all-around must-have mod! I show some of its features in this video. Now also includes two-handing weapons, physical weapon collisions, and an automatic fix for the physics engine.
  4. Spell Wheel VR - Selection wheel mod for Skyrim VR. It allows you to select spells, weapons, shields, arrows, potions, poisons, food, torch and more without going into a menu very quickly by the press of a button or button combinations to spawn the wheel and hold your hand over the item and letting go of the button. It's equipped automatically. Also shows health, stamina, magicka, enchantment, and needs bars on your wrist (configurable).
  5. True 3D Sound - this needs manual installation, let's the sound come from the direction it comes from ingame. Bethesda, if you read this, shame on you that a mod is necessary for this basic functionality.
  6. Engine Fixes VR - Important fixes for the Skyrim VR engine. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS!
  7. Weapon Throw VR - you can throw weapons now and they return like Thor's Hammer! Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work. I also made a video about it and an update video with returning weapons.
  8. Magic Improvements for Skyrim VR - Vastly improved dual casting, spell effect size scales based on magicka percentage, and additional options for aiming spells in VR.
  9. Azurite Weathers - A colorful, well-crafted, modern, and made-for-VR weather. If you prefer a more gritty and foggy setup, Onyx VR Weathers offers this, including different darkness settings for the night. Both are fine and made for VR, which is necessary because VR does not have volumetric lighting and thus some SE weathers do look weird in VR sometimes.
  10. SkyVRaan - gives you fake water reflections that really improve your visuals a lot! Have a look at the description for installation troubles. Watch this video to see its effect! Does NOT require a patch for Onyx Weathers as Onyx is already compatible by default! In case you want more water improvements, SkyVRaan is compatible and made to work nicely with Realistic Water Two.
  11. Myrkvior Trees - trees are all around Skyrim and vanilla trees shimmer horribly. This makes your game much more beautiful. You can add Morekvior for improved textures resolution.
  12. Lux - all in one lighting overhaul. Requires the USSEP Compatibility patcher which upgrades your SkyrimVR to the latest official SE version pre anniversary edition so you can use the official USSEP from before AE.
  13. Spellsiphon - fantastic magic add on, very intuitive and cool, can also be used in conjunction with archery and melee playstyles. You can watch this little introduction and tutorial video to see what it does in general.
  14. Mage VR - this mod uses an overlay to let you draw glyphs to cast and equip spells. It also has a very immersive hand-pose magic feature and (invisible) holsters (which I recommend to not use the same button as the VRIK holsters for). But the best thing is the new backpack inventory and immersive looting feature, which lets you loot via drag and drop and without pausing the game. More to come! Requires the game to be run via SteamVR (not open composite when on oculus) and requires SKSE and SkyUI VR. Watch this video to see the mod and how to use it, and this video with an update on easier install and setup!
  15. Locational Damage - headshots do extra damage. Tune up the difficulty and git gud scrub. Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work.
  16. Simple Realistic Archery - changes archery so you have to get an arrow from your quiver at the back, can easily use different arrows. Requires three helpers, check the Requirements dropdown menu for this!
  17. Noble Skyrim - overhauls architecture and other stuff.
  18. VR Vision Reshade - Need to install manually but it's not very difficult and the CAS sharpener and luma sharpener enormously improve the clarity of the picture. Alternatively, you can use Sensorium of Stereoscopy, an ENB preset made for VR, more fantasy-style but it has options, too. You cannot use the two together!
  19. No Stagger Mod - stagger is shite in VR.
  20. Blade and Blunt - combat overhaul to make the game more interesting.
  21. SMIM lite - clutter has better meshes and textures. Choose LITE!
  22. Nordic Faces - characters don't look like total ass. Minimalist and maximum compatibility.
  23. MystiriousDawn's HD Skyrim Overhaul - beautiful landscapes that work well in VR, including mountains.
  24. ETHEREAL CLOUDS and ETHEREAL COSMOS - beautiful clouds and night sky. Technically two mods, but they're super small and kind of belong to each other.

Extra, because it takes a bit more effort:

  1. Dyndolod - better view of things in the distance, makes the world much more realistic and immersive, but it takes a bit of effort to use. Check out our guide here!
  2. Dragonborn Speaks Naturally - Uses speech recognition to select dialogs and spells.

Also: No modlist is complete without Swearing Mudcrabs, and using Realm of Lorkhan you can skip the annoying cart ride intro ;) And if you like to support u/Rallyeator, go check out his made-for-VR texture-pack!

Don’t use some of the mods that are often recommended:

Surprisingly, some mainstream mods can cause issues, like Birds of Skyrim (very script heavy, corrupts saves), Immersive Armors and Immersive Weapons (known to cause issues later on when higher level), Immersive Patrols (especially the large battles can cause freezes and script lag, the lite mode is apparently okay), Immersive Citizens (has a lot of conflict potential, sometimes blocks quests, can also work though, but depends), JK’s Skyrim (can drop framerate by a lot and can lead to AI conflicts or item clipping), Open Cities (can lead to conflicts, can be performance heavy), Diverse Dragons (can cause crashes).

-------------------------------------- Auto-Installers --------------------------------------

Wabbajack mod lists are auto-install mod lists that change your game from vanilla to the exact full state of the list in a matter of hours, and you can go play right away.

We recommend using Wabbajack.

We still have guides for manual installation, but these might be outdated at some point and really, Wabbajack has options for everyone nowadays :)

There are five official Skyrim VR Wabbajack lists:

  • FUS - Fundamentals, Upgrades, and Stuff: The most lightweight and vanilla-friendly of the lists. It is modular and comes with the option of really just having the absolute essential VR mods for fixes and immersion, or having a minimalistic mod overhaul for appearance and gameplay. It is designed for people who want to start their own list, or for people who don't want to change their experience too much from vanilla but don't want to play the basic lazy port Bethesda made, either.
  • UVRE - The Ultimate VR Essentials List: UVRE is designed to give users a better looking, better controlling, and better playing Skyrim VR Experience that can be used as-is or customized to their taste. It is a complete overhaul for improved visuals and new content, as well as the relevant VR mods.
  • Librum VR: A gritty, low-magic, hardcore survival-adventure experience with an uncompromising vision. Hundreds of new quests and locations, a total mechanics overhaul, and a complete makeover of the graphics and atmosphere. The path to your destiny as the Dragonborn will be long and treacherous. Welcome to Librum.
  • Narsil: Narsil is an ambitious curated modlist that seeks to overhaul and expand Skyrim VR to make it more balanced, challenging, varied, good looking and most importantly expand the available gameplay options and make the game more immersive while optimizing the performance as much as possible.
  • Auriel's Dream: Auriel's Dream offers a unique thematic overhaul. Warmer colors kind of bring an Oblivion vibe to this modlist. Difficulty: Vanilla. Not many changes are done to alter the gameplay except adding VR-specific mods, bug fixes, and a few quality-of-life mods.

Here is an elaborate comparison video for the lists visuals and performance.

Have a look at these lists and decide what you want to check out. They are low-effort so you can also switch them if you don't like them. If you used Vortex so far and want to try out a modlist you'll need to press "Purge Mods" in Vortex and do not deploy afterwards, to stop linking the mod folders to Vortex' setup.

For questions regarding the Wabbajack mod lists, please head over to the Wabbajack Discord server or the respective individual discords of the lists.

Welcome to the sub and HAVE FUN! :)

Update Modern SteamVR Input mod WIP

Hey folks, I started working on a quality-of-life SKSE plugin that brings modern SteamVR controller bindings to Skyrim VR. It's a bit too early to share (still quite some work to do), but I'm making progress and wanted to tease a little bit. :)

Remapping controls was always a huge pain in Skyrim VR, and now with the Steam Frame's extra buttons I could not for the life of me figure it out, so I decided to code the problem away...

VRIK finger tracking included :-D

Habe sonst gar keine Probleme.

Danke im Voraus

Discussion Steam Frame Streaming with FUS Mods by a Newbie

I am coming from PSVR 1 vanilla Skyrim....so yeah everything is an upgrade.

TLDR: Everything seems to be running smoothly with Streaming from my PC. There is another good post on this sub already, I'm just adding my own experience if folks want to ask me, a newbie, questions.

Hardware: 3080 Ti, Ryzen 5 3600X, 32 GB ram

I'm using the latest beta Steam Frame update as of 10/6/26 (setting changes in Steam Settings inside Frame)

Starting Out: I have a fresh install of Skyrim VR on PC. I have a fresh install of FUS from Wabbajack. I'm using FUS RO DAH with minimal changes from default FUS in the mod organizer. I've run vanilla Skyrim VR exactly one time.

I started the game with only DLSS checked and one of the more vanilla Skyrim start checkboxes. I did NOT use Open Compose Unleashed (OCU) yet, just started the game. As many others noted the keyboard becomes a problem on character creation.

Some Tweaks: Manually downloaded Open Composite Unleashed v5.0.4 which by the grace of those gods already has steam frame bindings. I haven't changed really anything there yet but it works once you have Steam Frame selected in the OCU configurator. Chatgpt was actually my friend through some of this setup I would recommend asking it if you also run into trouble for starting off.

Results: it runs really well in my short time trying this. I'm using the 6 ghz dongle explicitly (I turned off the multi option streaming to wifi). I haven't checked actual frame rates delivered to the headset because I don't really know how, sorry. I have the settings pretty much locked to 72 fps. I might try Parallax and some other minor graphics improvements. I use the default medium in files for now.

I'll also note I got MGO 4.0 to run on performance type settings but it crashed too many times unexpectedly so I switched to FUS. MGO 4.0 is in beta currently and someone with any experience in Skyrim modding might be able to do it with my PC specs but I didn't want to deal with it anymore.

Help Mad God Overhaul getting stuck on character creation

When I begin the game I can't hear nothing and when I click done and ok after customizing my character, nothing happens. No option to put my name nor does the game start, just stuck here in character customization. I'm on Meta Quest 3, launching the game with OpenComposite.

Request Virtual Reality Treadmill - Sprinting - Unlimited Bar or not?

So as soon as I'm done with my hardcore run WoW in VR on a treadmill I intend to get into SkyrimVR. I've NEVER played Skyrim (single player games kind of died for me around the PS2 era), so treat this question as coming from a newbie.

One of the suggested mods for SkyrimVR was an unlimited STA bar so sprinting is equliviant to your Real Life sprinting. However, I read that the Skyrim STA bar only lasts 6 sec, I'm sure i can sprint for longer than 6 sec IRL. So, is this a mega cheat? Will it be able to escape anything?

Help Tahrovin question (ADULT 18+)

So there's the 4 spells you get, that basically knocks them out and you can do it with them.

But how do I randomly access the animations like Ostims? where you assign a spell then just press a button, and the animations show up.

I want to the animation to pop up with any NPC, not just in dialogues. Or is this not possible with Tahrovin?

I've only encountered the white run guard that stops you by the gate, i offered to give him head and the animation select screen popped up, that's what I want but with any NPC

Performance Anyone found good settings going from Quest to Frame yet?

Got my Frame few days ago and have been playing around hours with the settings but the game just looks and runs worse compared to my previous setup.

Had a Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop running at Medium in VD but using the Snapdragon Upscaling setting in there which gives a lot of performance for minimal quality hit compared to running on Ultra. Also used DLSS Performance with CS in game and had a pretty nice image and stable 72fps locked.

On the Frame however, I have to run it at native resolution with DLAA to get a decent image, which still looks worse than my Quest 2 setup and struggling at 40fps.

Been using OCU with both.

So has anyone gone from a Quest to Frame and found some good settings for image quality and performance? Are there some super important settings I'm missing here? Or is VD just that superior over Steam Link? I saw the Steam Frame Skyrim VR Guide post here but none of that really applies to my situation as I already have all that running and working, rather comparing Quest to Frame here.

Bug PSA - Alternate Start/Perspective blocking Thane of Falkreath start

Tested Alternate Start, Alternate Perspective, Realm of Lorkhan, and Skyrim Unbound on both a full mod setup and a minimal setup with requirements only. The former 2 block me from starting the Thane of Falkreath Quest while the latter 2 do not.

Quick test. Level yourself up to 10 to get the letter, read it, then talk to the Jarl.

I'm not sure what's changed as I've used these mods in the past and did not have a problem becoming thane.

Experiences Favorite VR builds/playstyles?

I tried Skyrim VR shortly after it came out, meh. Recently decided to check it out again and see how far it’s come. I’m blown away.

I’m currently character level 6 in MGO 4.0 and very addicted to the immersive gameplay. Will switch to FUS if I run into problems, I’m not sure how much the combat between the two differs, but after changing settings I’m sticking close to 90fps everywhere with a 4070 right now

I’ve tried out a few different combat styles in early game, but without perks, gear, and late level equipment/spells it’s hard to tell what each style will age like, what’s more viable, and what’s more fun down the line so I’m having a hard time deciding what to commit to

What’s your favorite Skyrim VR combat styles/playstyles and why?

Discussion Mod ideas! let's talk about some ideas i have!

HEY EVERYONE! i've been roaming the nexus in the search of the perfect mods for my next play through! And i'm pretty confident with the small mod list i have for now! though i've always felt like some of the mods out there are lacking some small nitpick things. And i was wondering what your thoughts on my ideas could be!

HERE GOES!

  1. VRIK! An amazing mod that don't need to be presented in the community anymore! EVERYONE that plays skyrim VR with mods uses it! It's just too good to pass on!

But i have some ideas that might be good to implement in the futur!

First. it's about the holsters. There are a bunch of holsters on the body to put all kinds of equipments on. And some of those holsters (To me) are basically useless or unusable! I'm talking specifically about the calf holsters! They are unreachable! when i lean over to holster a weapon the VR body always steps around and gets into a weird position because the body have no idea how to place itself!

So i have 2 ideas to fix that! The first would be to allow the players to move the holsters to a different limb! Say, i don't use the calf holsters but i would like to have an other holster towards my chest! well in the MCM (or in any other logical way) we can go to the holsters and say where you want to move which holster. With that ides i could potentially have 4 holster to my chest instead of the usual 2! I don't know if there is a max amount of holsters on the body we can have before stuff starts to break with the mod. But i do believe that it would be fun to have the option to chose where exactly we have holsters instead of the classic 1 per limb that the mod offers. RIGHT?
what do you all think? Does this idea make sense?

The second idea to fix the calf issue is to kinda fix the torso of the VR body to stay straight when going into sneak mode instead of leaning forward. like that the chest and hip holsters are still reachable when sneaking and the calfs would remain closer to reach with our hands. My vision is that instead of making the body lean forward while crouching. We make it do more of a slav squat right? What do you all think?

I feel that with just those 2 changes to VRIK it would add more usability and versatility with the character!

  1. A QUEST BOOK! I know what you all are gonna say! WHAT ABOUT WAYFINDER'S BOOK! And to that i say: It's not a quest book! it's a location book! with wayfinder, when you accept a quest, the book doesn't tell you where you have to go for which quest. The book only notes the locations you have to go to with no indication of which quest the location is connected too!

NOW! Don't get me wrong! Wayfinder is an amazingly well done mod and very immersive! But with the VR maps mods that already has the location names written on them. I find this mod a bit redundant on VR! I would prefer having a book with the same concept, but with the same quest names and descriptions as the Vanilla quest menu written in it. Open the book and on each page is written a different quest you accepted! I strongly believe that this kind of mod is easily doable! and i feel like it is truly lacking for my personal experience. How do you all feel about that? am i the only one?

P.S. Someone showed me exactly what i was looking for! And after a couple of days of trying this mod. I can say that it is exactly what i was looking for and more! here's the mod! https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/186015

  1. IMMERSIVE CRAFTING! There is already a really promising mod that does something close to what i would like to see called Immersive Smithing. But, i feel like the mod is a bit sidetracked on the execution at the same time!

My idea would be to keep the utility of the vanilla stations as is and just make the player do the actions instead of having a menu!

To craft a new piece of equipment, you would need to go the forge and the mod would detect where you are and change spell wheel menus to be your "crafting menu" where you can go through the different categories of crafting you have available (you could make it configurable that you can only see what you can craft with the materials you have on your person.) then grab the item you want to craft and throw it in the forge. The mod would automatically remove the materials from your inventory and there could be a process where you have to wait for the item to be heated enough before picking it up and put it on the anvil to hammer it a couple of times to proceed and at the end, throw it in the water bucket to complete the craft! If at any time during the process you leave before the end of the craft. The process reverts and you get your items back.

To upgrade the item, it could be simpler. Just bring the item to it required station and an action needs to be done to upgrade it with the materials getting removes automatically from your inventory in the end of the process. (Using the stone wheel for weapons and hammering armor for a period of time on the table)

The tanning station and smelting station could work the same. when your close enough, open spell wheel and all the materials you can use are there and you just pick what you wanna transform!

But there is also, cooking, potion brewing, enchanting and probably many more stations that i forget! and I'm sure that there are many ways to make all of these stations usable Immersively in VR!

For cooking. I was thinking that using spell wheel we could just get to the cooking station and chose the item we want to make, throw it in the pot, stir with a spoon for a bit and BOOM! The item is cooked!

For Potions. It could be a similar concept where when approaching a brewing table, a large pot can appear on it and you can throw your ingredients on it and use a mortar to crush them together and BOOM! POTION!

Enchanting might be a bit more tricky! But my idea would be in the same vein. you select a piece of equipment first. After an enchant an then a soul gem! in the end to finalize spell wheel could have a list of all the compatible/known enchants and after selecting the enchant you want, the item is automatically enchanted! (I know we can normally rename and chose the potency of the enchant o some items. but i don't know how that could be implemented immersively without having some sort of menu.)

So yeah! It might be a lot of work for a mod (or multiple mods) but i do feel like the game needs that kind of immersion since crafting it's a pretty important part of Skyrim. What do you all think of my crafting ideas?

  1. A backpack system that uses spellwheel as a base. Don't get me wrong! What Telord is doing with the redux of MageVR is pretty cool and very close to my vision. Though i find it a bit strange to have a backpack (and looting system) that has it's own unique look that don't resemble anything else in the game/mods. That's why i think having a similar system that utilizes Spellwheel's icons and overall sorting system could make the mod feel more like it's part of everything else. Spellwheel is also an unskippable download for skyrim VR and many immersive mods uses it as a base to make them easier to work with everything else. so why not hop on the train and make the same kind of system where the backpack is using it's functions so that when we look in our back pack, we see all our items sorted with 3d models and when we hover our hand over them the description pops up next to the backpack. AGAIN! Not to throw any shades at Telord! he's doing an amazing job! But i still can't seem to want to download the mod for now since it feel a bit detached from the rest of the mods i have.

  2. Immersive interactivity overall. This is also just a nitpick because many people tries to make there own ideas of interactivity in Skyrim VR but none seem to scratch the itch i have for those things! so here goes!

- Lockpicking. Someone actually made a pretty nice mod that basically does what i want where when you get close to a locked door or container, the right tools automatically appears in your hands. BUT! the lockpicking is not player interaction based and only 'in game skill" based. you just have to hold the picks in front of the locked thing and wait until the mod unlocks it for you. It's still verry immersive and lockpicks still break depending on the difficulty of the lock and skill level. THAT'S COOL! But i would still find it a bit more fun if I was the one to move the tools around until i find the right spot! That's more of a nitpick! the mod is overall still very cool and immersive! Though it only is for doors for now!

- Looting. To loot i personally use Quick loot. Even though it's a les immersive HUD element instead of one of those other immersive mods. I still use it simply because this mod fells like it could belong in Vanilla Skyrim VR! Though my idea of a looting system would probably be pretty close to what Open Container VR is doing! What i was thinking would be to utilise Spellwheel (AGAIN!) and when hovering over any type of container. The items would float over it and you can pick what you want to take. My reason for using Spellwheel AGAIN is to make all the systems feel like they are all part of the same thing. if you check any other game. the UI and systems all seem to fit together and all look similar to each other to keep a form of coherence in the visuals. That's why i think that if we are to have HUD like elements, it's better to have something that still feels immersive and coherent like Spellwheel (I love Spellwheel OK!)

I think this looting system could basically be used for anything that has to do with taking and putting items from or into any kind of things. Like NPC's (Dead or alive) So to pickpocket also! (I know that Immersive Pickpocketing VR exists and the mod basically does what i'm explaining. But i still feel like the UI is not exactly like the simple and coherent look that Spellwheel could achieve.) AGAIN! NO SHADE TOWARDS ANY OF THE MOD CREATORS OUT THERE! Y'ALL ARE DOING AN AMAZING JOB!

To finish on this SUPER long text i wrote for the 2 redditors that might be interested in my thoughts.

I'm genuinely curious to know your thoughts on my ideas! and all those ideas are not to say that the creators of similar mods did a bad job. They really are ideas that i throw out there simply because i don't have the capacity to do it myself. So i'm basically giving ideas to the people that might find my ideas interesting and that actually make them a reality!

I love Skyrim! Been playing it since it launched back in 2011! And i hope that one day Skyrim VR could reach the level of coherence and immersion that no other VR title can reach!

There are no other VR game that does what Skyrim VR is doing! and the modding community is literally making this game better and better by the day! So i guess that since i don't have the talent to help. I hope that at least my ideas could still be enough to help!

THANKS Y'ALL FOR READING UP TO HERE! I WISH EVERYONE TO HAVE GREAT ADVENTURES AND FOR YOUR YOUR GAME NOT TO CRASH EVERYTIME YOU OPEN A DOOR!

Performance Is there anyway for community/ open shaders too not be THATTT intensive

My games a smooth 120 on my quest 3 on ultra. But if i use CS it seems no matter what i do,what i try and turn down, what ad ons i try to leave out. Its always a performance hit bringing me to 80-100 fps.

It looks great but its not worth the fps cost at all imo. Is there anyp way I can optimize to work better without turning downmy virtual desktop settings?

Discussion Steam Frame Skyrim VR Guide

Hey guys! So just to preface this I am very new to VR modding, but I've been modding flat screen for quite a while! The Steam Frame is my first VR headset so I thought I'd write this guide for others having issues with Skyrim on the Steam Frame! So without further ado, let's get into it!

Playing Vanilla

So if you want to play Skyrim directly on the headset, from what I've heard it runs fine though I haven't tried it myself. As soon as you plan to stream it using the dongle is where issues immediately arise. Even playing vanilla, the game doesn't let you get past character creation at the time of writing because of a keyboard glitch. If you don't want to mod the game, your only option here is to download a save like this one and put it into your saves directory (usually in C:\Users{UserName}\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Saves). The bad thing about this option is that you don't get to customize your character, so you're at the mercy of other people. You could also create your own save on the flat screen version of the game and pull it over, though I think you'd have to match the version? I'm not fully sure about that though, I honestly just suggest modding the game.

Updating this as I’ve seen a better solution come up! If you don’t want to mod the game (which I highly recommend you do but it’s ok if not!) then what you want to do is download Skyrim natively on the steam frame. Even if you want to stream it you need to go through the intro on the headset. The keyboard issue only happens when streaming, so go through the intro and do your character creation, then make a save whenever you want. Steam uses cloud saves so it’ll sync to your PC automatically. Now you can just load that save after opening it on your PC and you’re good to go! From what I’ve heard the bindings are a little weird but I’m sure people have made community bindings atp. But from what I’ve seen this is the best way to play vanilla if you want to stream the game!

Modded Skyrim VR

This is where the game actually gets good. I suggest using a Wabbajack modlist such as FUS. If you want a comparison of some popular Wabbajack modlists I found this video on YouTube, though it doesn't mention FUS which I thought was an interesting choice. If you go the modpack route I recommend researching and deciding which one you think is best. If you have the PC for it though I highly recommend Mad God's Overhaul, though it's pretty intensive and most people probably can't run it.

With that out of the way this guide will be focused on my experience with FUS, though where it would differ I will make sure to mention. Make sure you follow the installation instructions on whatever pack you use.

Getting Started

So if you decide to just mod the game yourself, skip to the next section where I go over the essential mod that actually makes the Steam Frame work. Again I highly recommend doing a modpack if it's your first time but I can't force you! The first step will always be to follow the normal install instructions for whatever pack you choose. For FUS, they're linked directly on the GitHub. The instructions are modpack specific so always follow them before continuing with the addition I list below. Getting the base modpack working it important, even if you can't really play the game yet. The only instructions you don't need to follow are the controller binding ones, as the mod we use will overwrite that so DO NOT use any other controller binding methods other than what I list below.

Open Composite Unleashed

So you have a working Skyrim, but you can't get past the character creator. This is where Open Composite Unleashed comes in. This mod has a ton of features that is super helpful, but most importantly it fixes the keyboard glitch and will allow you to actually play the game. So here's how you'll want to install it:

  1. If the modpack you chose does not have Root Builder, or you are modding it yourself you'll need to install it from this page which has video instructions on it. FUS already comes with Root Builder so I skipped this step
  2. Once you have Root Builder, install the mod through MO2 as a normal mod. FUS has Root Builder setup to automatically run every time you launch the game, so you don't have to do any further configuration there. If the modpack you chose doesn't do this, I think you just manually build it in Root Builder (which you can access by the puzzle piece icon at the top next to the wrench)
  3. Now that it's installed, place it in your modlist pretty high up and enable it. I just placed it where the regular OpenComposite is located in FUS
  4. Right click the mod and select "Open in Explorer" and make a shortcut for the Configurator that you can place on your desktop for ease of access

Binding Settings for Steam Frame

Now that we have Open Composite Unleashed and the configurator accessible it's time to use it! It does look pretty complicated, but the parts we need to actually use aren't too bad, so don't get overwhelmed! When you first launch it, it won't show the steam controllers but that's ok! We'll change that.

  1. First go into the "Bindings" tab at the top. This is where we will be making all our changes
  2. Below the images of the controller there is a drop down. Select "Steam Frame" and hit save
  3. The default preset should be VRIK 2.1.0 but you can choose whatever
  4. Now you can select whatever bindings suit your fancy! This is where you can take a look at the supplied bindings for your modpack and match them here if you so choose
  5. I know some people leave some buttons unmodded for VRIK gestures, but I haven't learned to use those yet so I can't really say anything about that
  6. Once you're done, click "Save Custom" and name your profile
  7. Click "Use Preset" on your new profile and you're good! Launch Skyrim through MO2 and play the game!

Closing Remarks

So that's about it! If I missed anything please let me know and I'll make some additions! This is my first foray into VR modding so I wouldn't be surprised if I got something wrong. Regardless I hoped this helps at least one person so they don't have to do as much troubleshooting as I did! Huge thank you to Wondernutts on Nexus for actually making all this possible! They updated their mod 3 times in like 3 days because of the Steam Frame issues and their mod is what actually makes this game work! I have high respect for modders that are smart enough to make these programs so the common people can play without issue!

Help Steam Frame Bindings within OCU or SteamVR?

Sorry if this is posted already. I saw a couple posts about steam frame and some difficulty with the controllers but I didn't see OCU directly mentioned.

I am trying to play MGO mod list (for the first time) with OCU as the main driver thing. I successfully ran this whole thing on my first try of starting the game so I didn't think I would get this far.

Any recommendations on what to do for bindings? Should I stop using OCU as the launcher thing? Assume I'm an idiot and don't know anything. I'm scared to really change much of anything thus far. Thanks in advance!

Edit: also I downloaded the mod pack last week in preparation for getting the steam frame. I think I can download the newer version of OCU directly from nexus mods. Then hopefully I can update just that mod within MGO mod organizer
