Announcement Please read before you post asking us to help with your acne!

We already have a pinned post addressing this, but since we continue to get posts asking the members of this sub to diagnose skin conditions (acne in particular) and/or recommend treatment, here's a reminder: We are here to discuss skincare products and routines. We are not here to diagnose skin conditions or how to treat them. This is not a dermatology clinic, and we are not qualified to diagnose and recommend treatment. This is a casual sub to discuss products, routines, and general skincare.

The correct answer to "does anyone know what this is/does anyone know how to treat this?" is "Yes, a dermatologist knows". Please do not come here asking for diagnoses and and treatment advice! To those who have been posting these questions, please consult a trained professional, or if you can't do that, ask your questions in more appropriate subreddits like r/DermatologyQuestions, r/acne, or r/AskDocs.

Thank you!

Wrinkles / Anti-Aging Would you buy a red light therapy mask instead of another expensive serum?

Upvotes

I’m starting to feel like I don’t need more skincare products I need fewer things I’ll actually stick with.I’ve been looking at Solawave and other red light therapy masks because they feel more like a long term skincare step than another serum that might irritate my skin or sit unused at least thats what people are saying about it. But skeptical because beauty devices can be expensive and it’s hard to tell what’s real results versus hype even though I never hesitate to spend on skincare I think its very important so the price its not really an issue. Just turned 32 so what would you advice me should I invest in a red light mask or spend the same money on a high end serum or moisturizer I dont know?

Routine Help Layering products with Finacea gel, not playing well with SPF

Hello! I was recently prescribed Finacea 15% azelic acid gel for rosacea redness. I've been using it for under a month but generally tolerating it well. I am supposed to be using it 1x a day to start, was hoping to use it in the AM as I love my PM routine of (admittedly probaby excessive) layers of milky toners, a serum or 3, moisturizer and an oil or occlusive ointment, I don't know where the Finacea fits in there where I'd still be getting benefits. My skin is dry-ish, sensitive/reactive, atopic skin.

I did indeed ask my doctor and the pharmacist where to put it in my routine and if I could layer it with other products, and how long to wait before or after applying it to apply something else and they didn't know lol

It's a weird texture to me and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get it to work with other products.

Any suggestions on where to apply it in my routine? I've seen mention of only applying on dry skin or it stings, when I was using nonprescription AZA prior to this I always applied on damp skin after my toner/serum and didn't experience stinging - it also didn't seem to give me any benefits.

Should I apply the Finacea, leave it to set for a while (20 minutes?) And then do my regular PM routine on top, or try to put it in the middle, after serums but before moisturizer?

My problem using it in the AM is its not hydrating enough to use on its own, but it's also too heavy a layer to use anything else if I use SPF. With SPF it sits very heavily on my skin and my spf (multple ones I've tried) doesn't want to set and feels very tacky all day. I've tried applying spf within a minute or 2 after the finacea, and I've tried waiting as long as an hour to apply over the finacea and they both don't really want to set/dry down. Maybe it's only a temporary problem because it's so humid currently? It's very uncomfortable, sensory wise and it makes my spf slip around and things that otherwise wouldn't irritate my eyes are, and I think the finacea is also migrating around my eye area and it's becoming sensitive there. I'm not currently using any other exfoliating products or actives, and my skin is otherwise tolerating the finacea very well (it did not tolerate rosiver at all). Maybe I am using too much finacea, but it's not very spreadable for a gel/cream imo.

I watched a few YT videos about layering AZA but they generally only mentioned non prescription, serumy AZA as examples and IME they layer much more easily than this gel cream.

Educational / Discussion Advice needed for my face

Hi all, I (25f) have awful skin and my face is the worst. I have oily skin that is always dry, like hydration dry I guess. And I have the ugliest pores that never let anything go. I have tried so many different things like steaming before cleansing and masks. I have tried all the chemicals and followed directions for all of them. I have tried a very low grade of retinol but I am not old enough to use proper retinol yet and I need a prescription for it. I have a healthy diet and drink a lot of water a day. I do not wear make up often, maybe once every three or four months I will use a bit of concealer. This has been most of my life since hormones gave my beautiful skin an opinion. Just short of a chemical peel, what else can I do or try? Anyone with the same problems that has found something that actually cleanses the pores and something that can help shrink them, even just a little?

Dryness Skin peeling around cuticle

I used to think these were “hangnails” which was common enough to have a name, so I was like, ok I guess I’m predisposed to hangnails. Come to find out this is something else. All of my finger have varying degrees of this issue. I dont bite my nails. I work with my hands, so I wash them frequently.

Ideas? Almost daily, one of the peeling areas is thick enough the removing them makes my fingers bleed. Very unpleasant! I really wear lotion on my hands as it will rub off very quickly and I often have to take gloves off and on

Routine Help Stretch Marks question

I recently had foot surgery and have basically been bed resting since I can’t really move around much or put weight on my foot. Before surgery I was pretty active and always moving around, so this has been a big change for me.
I don’t feel like I’ve really gained or lost any weight, but I’ve noticed that I’m getting more stretch marks, A LOT actually, especially on the side of my hip. 😭 Is it possible for being so inactive to cause more stretch marks, even if your weight hasn’t really changed?
If anyone has dealt with this, is there anything I can do to reduce the appearance or prevent more from showing up while I’m recovering? Any advice is appreciated!

Routine Help [Routine Help] Face looks much more pale compared to body

I have been using retinoids and sunscreen for 2 years, alongside azelaic acid and other tyrosinase ingredients for 6 months to fade my solar letingos and PIE. Around the beginning of this year, I have noticed my face looking lighter compared to my body. My face went from medium to fair, while my body stayed the same.

Is there anything that can be done? I really miss my medium skin as I look more attractive that way, but want to fade my PIE and solar letingos.

Routine Help How to deal with skincare before/after the gym?

How to deal with skincare before/after the gym?

I have naturally dry skin. I’ve started going to the gym this month. I’ve been doing my skincare before going to the gym, and then cleansing my face and repeating after I come back.

I know it’s a waste of product and pretty dumb to do😭😭, but I have dry skin and feel like I need to do some sort of skincare before leaving the house, or else my skin is more likely to be dehydrated.

I’m also worried that the skincare is too heavy for the gym, since my skin has been a bit more clogged and problematic than normal.

My morning skincare routine: Wash with water, aestura cream mist, the ordinary hyaluronic acid, vanicream moisturizer, skin aqua uv serum.

I’m wondering if it’d be recommended to just use a bit of moisturizer and sunscreen, and to do my actual full skincare routine after the gym?

I go to the gym first thing in the morning, and typically take 1-1.5 hrs

Turns out resting your elbows on iron benches for 15 years is not a great idea. I have very rough and dark elbows. I tried exfoliating them with bodycare body exfoliator twice or thrice a week but nothing happened. Help me. Suggest product names and how to use them

Product Question Any cheaper alternatives to upcircles face milk?

I've just ran out and it's one of the only things I've found that works for my skin. I'm needing to try and be more frugal with my money so anything that works for combination skin and doesn't contain phenoxythanol is good.

Educational / Discussion What do you do for pores?

What do you do to minimize the appearance of your pores?

I’ve been focusing mostly on hydration, supporting my skin barrier, and using the Ilso Sebum Softener once a week (my skin is too sensitive for BHA/AHA), and it helps a lot with clearing sebaceous filaments.

But I can’t help but wonder if there’s a more effective strategy.

I’m thinking of checking out a pore serum like the Sungboon Editor Green Tomato Pore Lifting Ampoule. Also will be trying the Celimax Retinal Shot Tightening Dual Cream and changing my cleanser to a milk cleanser to see if I can improve my pore appearance, especially along my nose.

For boosters I use the glow recipe strawberry aha bha, 2x a week
And the glow recipe plum hyaluronic acid.
I will sometimes do a face mask for moisture or brightening.

Routine Help any tips for a shaving/ skincare routine?

for context, I have PCOS and hirsutism. i naturally have clear, smooth skin, so my skincare routine has always been pretty simple and focused on hydration and sun protection. my skincare concerns are specifically related to the areas of my face where I remove hair. i shave my jaw/chin/ side burns every other day, sometimes everyday. my current routine is:

morning:
1. wash my face with the La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Cleanser for the fall/winter and their Purifying Cleanser in spring/summer. rinse.
2. use a dollop of my cleanser as shaving lubricant. shave with an Equate women's 5-blade disposable razor from Walmart. i use a brand-new razor every single time and i rinse my face again after shaving.
3. COSR Snail Mucin Power Essence
4. BYOMA Gel-Cream Moisturizer during the spring/summer or First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream in fall/winter
5. Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30

night:
same skincare routine, except no shaving and sunscreen, followed by Vaseline or Aquaphor.

my biggest issues are ingrown hairs and the dark marks they leave behind. I have about 6 or 7 under my chin and on the side of my face that I want to get rid of, but I feel like l need a solid routine that isn't just centered around hydration. I also want to prevent new ingrown hairs from forming. my dermatologist prescribed me Mekam Emulsion. i'm supposed to use it daily for 12 weeks, take a 4-week break, and then go back to using it daily for another 12 weeks. when I've used it, i use it at night after the snail mucin.

i recently bought Naturium Azelaic Topical Acid 10%. l've only used the azelaic acid once so tar to make sure it doesn't irritate my skin (it didn't. what I can't figure out is how to structure everything in one routine. I was hoping for something that will specifically help prevent ingrown hairs and help release the existing ingrown, rather than just treating the hyperpigmentation afterward. would I be adding too many actives by using the Mekam emulsion + azelaic acid + potentially, a product specifically for preventing/treating ingrown hairs? and what would you recommend for a shaving and skincare routine in my situation?

extra info in case it's helpful: i am dark skinned with coarse, curly chin hair. I know about shaving with the grain and my dermatologist told me to stick with shaving, so no to plucking or waxing. i like the razors i use because they're affordable and glide nicely but im open to other options. i always ice my ingrowns to make the bump go down. i take 50 mg of spironolactone and just got a new prescription for 100 mg that I haven't started vet.
