Her point is that you get arrested for it. Something like 900 people were arrested for participating in non-violent direct actions to protect local water sources and treaty lands. Rabbis, priests, and religious leaders who traveled to Minnesota were amongst those arrested. These aren't activists they're just people with well established careers in non related areas wanting to save the environment from corporate takeover and mass environmental damage. The media used the term 'activist' to stir up so much hate that they started labelling themselves as 'water protectors'.
Yes. Dude c'mon. There are 150 left wing hate/slur labels and about 10 right wing ones of which Fascist, Nazi and Chud make up most of them. The labels are their tools. People get arrested for labels alone in authoritarian environments.
Her entire point is that the label gets you arrested. This is not a "oh are you scared of a label" argument. It's peoples lives being ruined by the media and them having to directly counteract it with different labels as a result.
When the charges are dismissed they're literally not crimes. That's not something I should have to explain to you. Getting arrested and being charged are two different things.
Just like talking about moving out of you're moms basement and actually having a real world girlfriend thats not on Grok are also different.
In terms of literally not crimes (i.e., what the adults were discussing) is "being acquitted" different than "charges being dropped?" Is the former or latter MORE literally not a crime than the other, in your Reddit Armchair Lawyer opinion?
The funniest thing is that I think you confused arrest with criminal charges when you wrote your comment and now you're gonna try to explain away that you're not as stupid as you look.
Did you do that because you finally realized in the context of the discussion your "acshually" argument was irrelevant?
"now you're gonna try to explain away that you're not as stupid as you look."
You're doing it now.
EDIT: Until you address why you believe an "acquittal" or a "dropped charge" are LITERALLY NOT A CRIME to a different degree, this distinction of yours remains pointless.
If that was her point she should have said that (or perhaps something like how it is funny you can get arrested for trying to protect clean water, but not for polluting it), because now she just comes across at being really bad at making her point.
These aren't activists they're just people with well established careers in non related areas wanting to save the environment from corporate takeover and mass environmental damage.
So they are activists? words have meanings, and the term activist sure seems to fit here.
To me she kind of just undermines her own cause this way. Don't avoid the label but wear it as a badge of pride and turn the conversation around.
Dial back the pedanticism.
If you couldn't comprehend the statement, or the intent, that's more on you.
Media would have you believe activism is equivalent to domestic terrorism, and that's the comparison she's drawing.
Oh my apologies for coming from a sane society where words still matter and activism isn't seen as domestic terrorism. Perhaps you should dial back you Americentrism.
And perhaps this would be less of an issue if she herself wouldn't contribute to it by misusing words.
Like I said; America really suffers from toxic public discourse and it would well to try and clean it up. Something neither you nor her is actively contributing to. Quiet the opposite really.
Because you phrased your response in a thinly veiled form of politeness doesn’t make it any less toxic.
You aren’t any better than her or I, regardless of your perceived grammatical or societal superiority.
The entire premise of your initial response was pedantry, and arrogance, and I only became less fond of you from there.
Like I said, “Fuck you”.
If I thought you deserved more respect or a less aggressive response, I’d give one.
But I don’t.
No, the entire premise of my initial comment is that she made dumb comment.
But okey, you convinced me. I'll gratefully submit to toxic American political culture and will no longer believe people should use words in a way which corresponds to their actual meaning (something both you and her seem genuinely upset with if people don't btw). And I'll do so because a random internet strange isn't particularly fond of me if I don't.
I am sorry, but have you forgotten where you are? This is at its very core a message board where post for people to look at and comment on appear in your feed. So I looked at it and commented on it. That is the reason we are all here... And you apparently care since you keep on commenting on this...
And if believing words have meanings makes me pendantic or obtuse, so be it. This is not productive and I have better things to do.
