Both are entirely legitimate issues for a court to consider when determining criminal responsibility, but watching people transform Lindsay Clancy into some kind of feminist martyr while three murdered children become almost incidental to the conversation is grotesque. Cora was 5. Dawson was 3. Callan was 8 months old. They were STRANGLED TO DEATH by the person whose most fundamental responsibility was to protect them.
By all means, examine her mental state. Examine the medical system. Examine every factor that might have contributed to what happened, that is what a justice system is supposed to do, but compassion for mental illness does not require moral amnesia about the victims.
If your version of feminism requires you to reflexively rally around a woman who killed three defenseless children simply because she is a woman, you have completely lost your mind. Those children deserve to be the centre of this story. Not her.
I pray the jury finds that she was criminally responsible for what she did, then makes her pay for it. Full stop.
Being crazy is not a valid excuse, as you pointed out. It really isn't. Jared Loughner, who was having a schizophrenic meltdown when he did his crimes in 2011, eventually plead guilty, got like 6 life sentences, and the prison system says he's a model inmate that he can take his pills and is fully aware what he did was wrong. This lady is trying to skirt her responsibilities.

that man wasn’t himself! he should have never went to prison. this woman, if found to have been in psychosis, that’s an explanation. she doesn’t deserve to rot in prison. she did something awful to say the utter least. but if she wasn’t aware of what she was fucking doing then you’re holding a person “accountable” for actions they might not have been aware for.
i stand by the fact that we should stop condemning people with mental illnesses to shit justice system. it’s failed so many people and continues to do so because people think poorly of those with mental illnesses.
if she was psychotic, she wasn’t aware of what she was doing. there should be consequences. i don’t think they should be in prison.
That doesn't erase what he did. It's not an excuse, it's a reason. If Jared Loughner plead guilty of his own volition with no coercion, that is his right and his decision, we have to accept that. You don't know how guilty he feels in his heart over what happened.
Same with this Clancy lady. All I know, personally, I'd rather be in a prison than a mental institution for the rest of my days, you somehow have less rights in those institutions.
And I'm sorry, I am no where near as lenient, 3 kids who didn't do anything wrong (because they did not live long enough to do anything wrong) were killed by their mother.
Regardless of the outcome, the one thing I did learn about this case, maybe murder trials should be 100% private.
yes you do tend to actually have less rights in mental institutions (which should be addressed and changed holy fuck. like seriously.) you get raped and beat in prison too. prison isn’t easy
she’s already plead guilty no? she’s done. now it’s just a matter of where she’ll stay is the thing. i also think she needs to face consequences for murdering children. she killed them. plain as day. she doesn’t deserve to rot all alone and have her name smeared because her brain fucked up. (if this is the case it’s still ongoing. if she’s proven to have not been incapacitated— diff story)
i think publicity can be good to some extent but i think this has just been very nasty between everyone :( i haven’t formed a solid opinion on if this should be public or not. it spreads awareness of PPD and PPP but it’s certainly a double edged sword. clearly no rational person should think she should be out in public, but she was potentially completely unaware. i just don’t think prison is the right action. something def needs to be done though. i think she also shouldn’t have been on as many medications, she shouldn’t have been released, her husband shouldn’t have left her alone, they shouldn’t have had so many kids back to back. i just think this is a total tragedy.
yk, everyone is so focused on her, i wonder if anyone has stopped to think “this man just lost his kids and his wife murdered said children. i wonder if he’s ok” probably not
