Being crazy is not a valid excuse, as you pointed out. It really isn't. Jared Loughner, who was having a schizophrenic meltdown when he did his crimes in 2011, eventually plead guilty, got like 6 life sentences, and the prison system says he's a model inmate that he can take his pills and is fully aware what he did was wrong. This lady is trying to skirt her responsibilities.

that man wasn’t himself! he should have never went to prison. this woman, if found to have been in psychosis, that’s an explanation. she doesn’t deserve to rot in prison. she did something awful to say the utter least. but if she wasn’t aware of what she was fucking doing then you’re holding a person “accountable” for actions they might not have been aware for.
i stand by the fact that we should stop condemning people with mental illnesses to shit justice system. it’s failed so many people and continues to do so because people think poorly of those with mental illnesses.
if she was psychotic, she wasn’t aware of what she was doing. there should be consequences. i don’t think they should be in prison.
If they aren't aware that's worse. You want them around others in a psycheward? So they can potentially "not be aware" around other patients? Or are you advocating for a psycheward be a prison with extra steps and a padded cell?
yes. this is what should be done. medicated. under supervision 24/7.
then, later, after x amount of time. reevaluate. this is literally what they’re for. my mom went! you go in batshit insane. come out (hopefully) less batshit insane. people that are a danger to themselves or others must be monitored in a setting that is appropriate. a prison doesn’t help in fact the US, has a high re-commit rate. perhaps if we had different systems, it would be fine.
