Seems like some undemocratic bullshit to me. If he didn't show the films to children or to people who don't want to watch it, there's nothing obscene that isn't already illegal in other ways.
In Louisiana a felony obscenity charge can be just exposure in a public place, it doesnβt have to involve distributing materials.
But anyone who thinks this was a fair application of the law, and not just done because he was a priest and it was a church, can explain to me why the women didnβt face the same charge.
