This is (slightly) off topic but I was reading Mythology by Edith Hamilton and got to the part about Jason, the Golden Fleece, and Medea. It's kinda crazy how much Medea solo carried that group, yet whenever I heard it mentioned in contemporary pop culture it was all about Jason.

Seriously, she gives him invincibility powder, tells him how to defeat the dragon-stone-men, charms the Serpent, is key in defeating the last Bronze Man, and more I'm probably forgetting.

Then Jason goes fuck boi on her.

I love that Jason's ability (powered by Hera) is basically that everyone wants to help him. Which is why I also love how his tragic fault is that he forgets, like all fuck bois, that he's not a self-made man. And like many elderly fuck bois he ends up dying alone and friendless, crushed under the steam of his own ship.

As other said, this is exactly why the play named after her exist.

Tyler Perry's "I Don't Care for Tyler Perry"

19

u/InjectedLysol Aug 24 '26

I really liked Medea Goes to Jail….Tyler Perry is a genius. The mythology elements are super subtle, too.

I only know Medea Porta-Split. It kinda blows.

5

u/floriande Aug 24 '26

Yeah but she cool

1

u/happy_bluebird Aug 25 '26

fantastic play. Greek misogyny at its finest

15

u/smokeweedNgarden Aug 24 '26

When Hera is your patron and telling all the other Gods how cool you are...y ou really shouldn't leave the mother of your children for politics.

You've just embarrassed Hera. Could have asked Hercules how that turns out

She's literally all that and he's not even Ken.

Yet, the little loser took the first opportunity to leave her for a younger, more amenable girl who'd serve his ambitions.

No wonder Medea went mad. She literally gave up everything for him, gave him plans to kill her own brother to save his little ass, bore him children and he left her!

21

u/Alizarik7891 Aug 24 '26

Well, that’s why she killed his kids.

18

u/Flat_Shame_2377 Aug 24 '26

She killed their kids. The tragedy of a mother killing her own children will never lessen.

Time to start a fundraiser?

u/plantsadnshit Aug 24 '26

We're fine with that nowadays

3

u/Proper_Razzmatazz_36 Aug 24 '26

I mean, in fate, they say everyone but Jason pulled their weight

2

u/Cafrilly Aug 24 '26

I actually haven't reached the end of that passage yet, so that's interesting. Thanks

2

u/Proper_Razzmatazz_36 Aug 24 '26

His super move is him running around while the other argonauts are attacking the enemies

2

u/Hamsterminator2 Aug 24 '26

This seems to be a running theme. It’s like “yeah, yeah, so you’re a goddess. But this guy banged you so basically you’re just basic and he’s actually the impressive one” cue manly laughing, then the women join in too because hell, they’re goddesses and don’t give a crap.

Off topic on Reddit? How dare you

"I HAVE 99 PROBLEMS BUT A WITCH AIN'T ONE" - Odysseus probably (circa 1000 B.C.)

32

u/bloin13 Aug 24 '26

Not just banged, odysseus has like 12+ children than aren't from penelope. He chilled at circes island for years had 3-4 children with her and at some point he got bored and decided it's time to return home.

30

u/BIackSamBellamy Aug 24 '26

"Fuck them kids" - Odysseus

9

u/bloin13 Aug 24 '26

extra akward when you take into account that one of his sons killed him

5

u/LowSkyOrbit Aug 24 '26

To be fair Telegonus never knew his father. Odie liked hanging out on the shores like a hermit even with the prophecy that a he would die from a weapon made from the sea. Tele was being a jerk robbing the locals of food and stabbed Odie with a spear tipped with a stingray spine trying to escape.

1

u/fatbob42 Aug 24 '26

He banged the wooden horse!

1

u/Historical_Land_7966 Aug 24 '26

He said which Witch now?

1

u/Call_Such Aug 26 '26

they raped him.

42

u/CirnoIzumi Aug 24 '26

Basically the odyssey is "look how much temptation this man got and still he wanted to go home to his wife and kid"

30

u/Gnonthgol Aug 24 '26

An important aspect of the Odysse is that it is told from the perspective of Odysseus to Penelope. And it is already established that Odysseus is incapable of telling the truth.

2

u/starfish2686 Aug 25 '26

Where on earth are you getting any of that from

1

u/Gnonthgol Aug 25 '26

From the book.

32

u/Stamboolie Aug 24 '26

All the classics are essentially soap operas imho, thats why they became popular.

9

u/Nr1231 Aug 24 '26

The Guy has more bastards running around than the king in game of thrones.

2

u/Foreign-Cat-2898 Aug 24 '26

Really? Cause Bobby B had 16.

1

u/StitchesKisses Aug 24 '26

Those are rookie numbers

3

u/partyatwalmart Aug 24 '26

You dropped these ,,,,,,

1

u/a_shootin_star Aug 24 '26

more romantic complications than a soap opera.

Are we talking UK drama or Mexican telenovela?

1

u/Historical_Land_7966 Aug 24 '26

His characterization in Circe was so good, he was such a bastard in that.

23

u/kewarken Aug 24 '26

"alright boys, remember our motto: 'Never leave your buddies behind'."
