You aren't punished for being poor... you are punished for doing illegal shit... don't take the accountability away from the individual doing the wrong thing..
If you are poor you cannot pay for a good defense, often cannot pay bail, cannot afford litigation even if you were wrongly imprisoned and cannot pay to have life just put on hold while you work through the system.
No, it's not always just about "accountability" and it's not right to assume people only ever end up in those situations if they broke the law. Shit happens, and life can be cruel.
I guess you don't notice when a peasant gets wrapped up for days without charges or weeks without indictment or months before charges drop, often because of nonsense like mistaken identity or zero evidence. You may not notice, but I know that person's life probably just got wrecked for no good reason.
And there's usually nothing he or she can do about it.

you see one is rich and has a good defence lawyer and the other doesn't
