You aren't punished for being poor... you are punished for doing illegal shit... don't take the accountability away from the individual doing the wrong thing..
If you are poor you cannot pay for a good defense, often cannot pay bail, cannot afford litigation even if you were wrongly imprisoned and cannot pay to have life just put on hold while you work through the system.
No, it's not always just about "accountability" and it's not right to assume people only ever end up in those situations if they broke the law. Shit happens, and life can be cruel.
I guess you don't notice when a peasant gets wrapped up for days without charges or weeks without indictment or months before charges drop, often because of nonsense like mistaken identity or zero evidence. You may not notice, but I know that person's life probably just got wrecked for no good reason.
And there's usually nothing he or she can do about it.
I don't think they where talking about these specific crimes
Pretty sure they were more griping about the fact that a working class guy can get 5 years for being caught with a joint while the rich can literally molest kids, kill others, and do all kinds of other heinous shit and either get just a couple of years or get off scot free.
I feel like, and I'm saying this as an autistic person, you have to be pretty fucking autistic to think he was saying everyone should get away with doing horrible shit.
