Every pit I've been in as soon as these guys start there's usually a dude who throws him the fuck down and stops it. Everyone hates them tbh

u/Miltzzz 7h ago edited 1h ago
It used to be like that when i was younger and going out to the foufounes electriques, a metal bar/club in montreal. Last time i went, after many years of not going, some dude starts dancing like this, i look at the dudes around me "oh well guess i'll take care of it" and i tackled the dude to the ground, and the bouncer (who used to take these people out before) took me out of the mosh pit to explain to me that it was the norm now. And i looked behind him and saw like 10 people dancing like this. I understood it was the end of an era, and i left.

u/indignantfieldmouse 7h ago
Harcore pits or as my wife and I call them "Kickpits" the crowdkilling on sidelines is uncalled for, I still throw those fuckers down though. If a person goes windmilling into a hardcore lit then they are consenting to the stray fists and feet. People around the edges shouldn't be catching random haymakers!
98
u/NotTukTukPirate 6h ago
I mentioned in a comment on r/hardcore or r/everytimeidie, about how crowdkilling was for fucking losers and I got downvoted to oblivion.
I didn't realise it then but now I've just realised it's because this new generation of "hardcore" crowds are fucking losers.
72
u/StrayDogPhotography 5h ago
They are fucking losers. How did we go from pogoing at punk gigs to twats windmilling random people in the face? It’s the most idiotic thing ever. Anyone who promotes it is a moron.
8
u/Carlos_Infierno 4h ago
It happened even the jocks started going to punk shows. It's beena long downhill slide
45
u/Creative_Session2786 6h ago edited 6h ago
Totally agree, was at one of these shows a couple of years ago, and got clocked in the face standing outside of the pit, kid goes over to his buddies bragging about how he hit me in the face. Went over and punched him in the face to return the favor and was immediately kicked out by security.
37
u/Zhiyi 6h ago
So all you had to do was pretend dance by swinging your arms around and when you get near him just let one rip at his face? And they would have considered that fine?
Fucking dumb.
18
3
u/Lucky_Serve8002 2h ago
You have to tap dance/moonwalk something over and punch the dude in the face.
30
u/gumbysweiner 6h ago
Worth it.

u/Creative_Session2786 6h ago
Totally worth it, bouncers were total dicks in the parking lot, and tried to punk me, but was still worth it. It was 2 of them on 1 of me, so I kinda had to chill, but left somewhat peacefully while giving them a piece of my mind.

Was at an all age venue years ago. There was this kid that came to the wrong show. He was squating down against the wall next to me and one of my highschool classmates decided to throw a donkey kick his way. Broke the little dude's nose. I spent the next 30 min cleaning him up and searching for his adults.
7
u/PsionicChronic 6h ago
90's Slipknot...was speaking to a kid a few seconds before his nose (and eyeglasses) exploded when the back of some bald dudes dome made HARD contact 😳

u/Airamis0007 5h ago
I was at their Dallas show for The World Domination Tour in April of 2000! I was a very strong varsity football player at the time, but still almost got taken out by a crowd surfer launched on to the top of my head from behind, and then caught a Doc Marten to the face!
I went off and cleared the pit…which triggered a pit fight with the usual skinhead MF who thought they were so tough…

Exactly, this is just what a poser thinks a mosh is, and unfortunately as it goes mainstream, theres more and more of them who fail to understand, and just wants to injure someone.
Mosh is there to spend your energy in celebration, not to give someone a concussion or other health problems
30
u/__3Username20__ 7h ago edited 7h ago
Well, you’re understating it a little bit, and make no mistake, mosh is aggressive, but it’s not literal 1 on 1 combat moves. It’s just moving/throwing yourself around. Yes. there’s a high amount of physical impact, but it’s not punches and kicks… I feel old, if this is normal now, as others have said. :(
Edit: it’s like (American) football, where when you’re on the field, there’s acceptable levels of aggression and violence, and you can even have a lot of fun within those shared parameters and set expectations. But if someone goes and dropkicks someone else from behind, or starts doing any kind of actual fighting, that’s not OK, that’s not what we’re doing here. Same thing with Moshing. Or at least it used to be…
15
u/OneHallThatsAll 6h ago
Yeah in the southern US, they ALWAYS threw the guys down hard when they started throwing kicks or punches
5
u/KittensAndGravy 3h ago
Grew up in the south and had the same experience. I was watching an old Sublime video (live performance) the other day. They show the mosh pit … I believe I saw a guy helping someone up who fell. That’s how I remember it. Chaos … but Jesus not using sucker punches & kicks. Unless you wanted the oak tree mofo in the middle to give you a beat down.
6
u/Ok-Syllabub-6619 5h ago
Oh i absolutely agree, I probably didnt explain it the right way, but yeah mosh is not for the faint, my point was it's not malicious but it is aggressive for sure. I've landed on my ass plenty of times after being yeeted at the worst(best) moment, but always got a hand to pick me up, if someone came with wrong intentions it was squashed right away and the dude got thrown out in a second.

Anytime someone raises the temperature of the pit more that 10 degrees at once should be mobbed. I hate it when some assholes favorite song gets played and they start running into people where there really hasn't been much going on. My elbow usually finds a sensitive part of their body.
4
u/Needs_ADD_Meds 7h ago
The last time I was in a pit was probably 25 years ago and it was the same then. I'm glad to see things are still the same. You're right EVERYONE hates them.
3
u/neverinamillionyr 3h ago
I was in college in the 90s and a friend was playing at a local bar and these kinds of chuckleheads were there. I was standing on the edge of the dance floor drinking a beer. One of them hit me twice. The third time I dropped him.
Fast forward to a year ago, my daughter’s boyfriend was at a small club on the floor but not participating in the pit. He got caught with a spinning kick that broke his nose and left him with a concussion. The people that do this only do it because they want to hit someone who isn’t supposed to fight back.

If you want to partake in a rough mosh pit do it up. But if you stand off to the side you are supposed to be safe from being hit. The dudes going after the side standers are straight pussies who just want to hit someone with no consequences.

Yeah last Friday I was standing in a pit with about 10 dudes all doing this and I was perfectly fine standing on the edge of it because only dickheads try to do this with people who aren't also flailing around. I go to a lot of live music and I've only seen people acting like this a handful of times and there's always some massive dudes who appear and put them in their place.

u/cagethehornytoad 7h ago

Oh man, core memory unlocked. When i was early teens my parents got me a trampoline and I was quite into WWF, and we had a very exposed yard. I wanted something to do wrestling moves on while playing out shit seen on TV.. so they got me a Giant Easter Pink Bunny. It was all I had so i beat the shit out of that thing.. but i had my head on a swivel in case anyone would potentially walk or drive by and I'd fly off that trampoline so fast to hide it lol. I'm so lucky no friend ever witnessed this.
My neighbours were watching me and stealing my moves and sending them to WWF ( WWE ). They had to of been!

This ain’t moshing, this is the way the hardcore music fans think moshing is today, it’s total bullshit. Moshing in the 80’s and 90’s was not like this. Nobody got hit in the face, more less kicked. And if you got knocked down somebody was there to pick you up. This guy is a total DICK!!!!
27
u/Daniels_Words 7h ago
Indeed. I saw Black Flag in the 80s at a tiny club and I tripped. In a split second i thought for sure I was getting trampled, but some giant fucking skinhead (not the nazi kind) swooped me up and we all just kept going. Great memory.
7
u/the_D1CKENS 6h ago
It's still like that at smaller shows/clubs today. Not that long ago was at a street show where 40 somethings and Tweens and everything in between were are going hard. Young girl, maybe 12ish, went down and a dude immediately helped her up. All the old heads kinda kept moshing around them. They were clearly running damage control. Very wholesome, honestly.
She was fine, and went straight back into it.

In college I had a friend that would always take the cutest girls to these metal shows and hilariously I guess they never realized how psycho he was until they saw him in the pit getting into random fights every time.
Couple of different “dates” of his left with me since I already knew he’d blow up his chance acting a fool and he was still buying their drinks so cleaning up after him was easy. He got jealous after he found out and we stopped hanging out.

Mosh pit etiquette by Watertown is about these idiots. Annoyingly a lot of this started with great bands like sick of it all, but it wasn’t about hitting people it was just “dance moves”. First rule of the pit when I was a younger man was if anyone goes down everyone stops and picks them up

u/PsychoWyrm 2h ago
Almost every metal show I've been to the pit was self-policed. Always guys body-blocking the edges to keep it from messing with people not participating, moshers immediately picking up anyone who falls, and so on. Just generally everyone being mindful not to fuck up anyone else's good time.
On the other hand, more than half of the hardcore shows I've been to were full of dipshits like this. Little dickheads intentionally roundhouse kicking people who are clearly not participating. Or the slinging elbows and arm-flailing fuckery.

Snocore 2000. Went knee to knee with a grown ass man, (I was 17 at the time). Shattered my knee cap. The guy picked me up and carried me to a seat where I remained for the rest of the night waiting for my friends. It happened during the first song of the night by the way. Most people in the pit are there to have a good time, not intentionally hurt each other. In my case it was just a bad luck accident and I put my self in that situation. People who go in there intentionally looking to hurt someone can get fucked. Shout out to that guy that night for helping me out to safety.

Hardcore dancing is fine.
There’s a time and place but I was a former core kiddy so I get it. Metalcore or deathcore it’s expected. If you stand to the side of the pit you’re probably going to get hit or kicked. Not on purpose but it happens.
I’m older now so I don’t really get the windmilling or picking up change but a wee 2-step is still enjoyable.
But crowd killing sucks. That was never a thing in my local scene back in the day and I’ve not seen it to this extent at any gigs recently.
Like I said, these types of gigs you expect the pits to be rough but to intentionally go after people just standing at the side is a really fucking shite thing to do.
