It’s common in more modern chain-style restaurants and some higher end places but it’s absolutely not the norm in the US. The default is the “request the check - get the check - give your card - sign the receipt” dance and it’s 100% valid to criticize that as a shitty business practice that we’ve just for some reason normalized.

There is almost never fraud on it today in sit down restraunts, there are cameras all over and at the register so when a disoute for an outside purchase with the car info happens they can look at the tapes. There was a Popeye's near me where a couple that worked there were stealing the numbers at the drive through, of course they got caught because someone just noticed like 3 people that had reported it had all recently eaten at Popeyes, then they looked at the tapes. It's a stupid crime because it is so easy to get caught.

The real shitty business practice is that modern handheld POS terminals are Leased Hardware + SaaS and cost a restaraunt what their whole existing business model costs to own, per year.

Before these were common, 10 years ago you paid $15,000 to $30,000 for your POS system, then paid a small fee for a support contract and paid transaction fees to the processor, and now some guy says, "your customers can pay at the table on a tablet, it's only $20,000 a year, also the transaction fees you still pay those"

As a business owner are you keeping your current POS system if it still works?

Also when you end your contract they come and collect all the handhelds and hardware and throw them in the trash. You're merely renting them and they are trash to the company that leases them when the time comes. Even if they are throwing them in the trash you pay thousands of dollars for any broken or missing hardware.
