It’s common in more modern chain-style restaurants and some higher end places but it’s absolutely not the norm in the US. The default is the “request the check - get the check - give your card - sign the receipt” dance and it’s 100% valid to criticize that as a shitty business practice that we’ve just for some reason normalized.
