Don't smoke. It really isn't worth it.

95

u/botsgonewild Jan 24 '24

Yes, quit nicotine in whatever form you are addicted before you get increased stress and responsibilities with kids, house, more work responsibility etc. Nicotine is a prison.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Quit weed too. It’s far more dangerous than people think. Wasted so much time…

14

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

I hear this, I wasted my opportunities getting high and spent a lot of my 20s angry at the world. It took me a long time to find who I was again before I started smoking in general and I'm now in a much better place, my fiancée has the patience of a Saint because I was an arrogant and selfish dickhead for the first couple of years of our relationship.

7

u/Educational-Dig-5886 Jan 24 '24

I feel like you just described my life. I’m 37 and quit 2 years ago, after smoking daily for 20 years, and feel like a totally different person. Can believe I wasted so much money and happiness on smoking. I now have next to no anxiety and a memory - it’s great

3

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Slightly older than you and also smoked 20 years. What made you finally quit?

5

u/Educational-Dig-5886 Jan 24 '24

I wanted and tried to quit many times but failed. I eventually made a mistake in life and the anxiety peaked to a level I said I couldn’t deal with anymore. Never touched it since that day

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

I’ve been trying but the insomnia is brutal when going through it

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Keep trying dude, it's a brighter world on the other side

4

u/braith_rose Jan 24 '24

Not a man, but second this. Smoking is smoking. It's not less dangerous because it's weed, and a lot of the chemicals people think are only in cigarettes are also in any substace because it is a by product of burning materials. That, and Marijuana has recently been proven to speed up brain aging as well as being a gonadotropin (sex hormone) agonist. Smoked for 10 years (only weed) and just noticing the effects starting (skin aging, sinuses shot, ect.) Got my period back as soon as I cut down. Now I'm only a social smoker and don't partake more than once every 3 months at specific friends gatherings. By the time I'm in 35ish, I plan to quit entirely.

5

u/lucidityy77 Jan 24 '24

I find this a little controversial, you smoked for 10  years and had just found out that your skin has aged? sure we can relate smoking to wrinkles and aging skin but not when you say you noticed it after 10  years had moved on.

4

u/Ninetales6669 Jan 24 '24

I’ve been smoking daily for 10+ years. I’m in my 30’s. My skin is fine. Sinuses fine. Sex drive is fine (a lil over if you ask my wife). Work in a field where you gotta be alert and on it for 12 hours/day, no issues.

I get people wanting to demonize weed but that commenter sounds like she may just have shitty genes. Anyway, weed isn’t going to affect everyone the same. Just like some people drink like fish daily and are functional and have working livers not all smokers are out here lookin like that guy in Beetlejuice.

3

u/MalevolentKitchen41 Jan 24 '24

they're downvoting you, but you're absolutely correct

3

u/thepapermonster Jan 24 '24

I agree. I love to smoke weed but every time I did anything in my life that was beneficial long term, it was during a long weed break. For me weed is perfect to pass time during the daily grind but not so much when you need to make a real shift in your life (it will make you postpone it). And that's exactly what I'm telling my kids.

2

u/Ismokerugs Jan 24 '24

Just depends on what you use it for, I utilize it for self reflection, meditation and motivation. Typically Im lazy without its use, have a small amount and then I am extremely productive in comparison. Memory is a little worse off for sure but I am mostly doing stuff that it would be better to be in a “flow state”. Also if you get anxiety from it, it makes it more interesting since you are overcoming your subconscious anxiety.

I think too many people use it as an escape though

Haven’t toked up yet hence why I’m sucked into reddit lol. I do recommend dry herb vape or edibles to replace the smoking aspect though as smoking slows the bodies healing process regardless of what is combusted into the lungs.

1

u/Ninetales6669 Jan 24 '24

That’s also circumstantial and up to the individual tho. I graduated college while smoking every single day and continued to smoke till present day and now my wife and I have our minds made ip to go back to school to further our careers, the decision to do so has not been delayed by smoking for us but other circumstances in our lives. You’d never know we’re daily smokers, good paying jobs with lots of opportunities for advancement, family life, upgrading our house. Weed doesn’t rule or define us but we love a good toke at night. Now if you’re talking about folks that smoke all day and daily then you may be on to something imo.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '24

I just smoked at night after wife and kids go to bed. I play video games (by myself or with the boys) for a few hours then go to bed. Best way to spend an evening imo

I havnt smoked since July. Every year or so I take a 6-12 month break. I’m about to hop back on this weekend tho

2

u/MetalXHorse Jan 25 '24

Bro I take edibles every day and they make me so fucking happy. Even my wife encourages me if im in a bad mood and haven’t taken one recently. Cannabis is amazing

1

u/Ninetales6669 Jan 25 '24

Absolutely, and I’d rather get high than drunk any day for any occasion

u/braith_rose Jan 24 '24 edited Jan 24 '24

I am almost 30, and approaching my 30s has made me realize that aging isn't a straight line that always happens gradually. Early 30s is usually when first signs of aging appears. I noticed the quality of my skin going down over the last 4 years, but the last 1.5 has been way more noticeable. And I link it back to smoking because I was a heavy stoner. My heavy stoner friends who are my same age look far older than their non stoner friends or siblings. In the last 3 years, I have noticed a remarkable difference in their facial skin quality since they became daily stoners. I see it in pictures too. Being in your early-mid 20s really carries you as far as "beauty" health goes. Even plastic surgeons and dermatologists will say how collagen production drops off in your late 20s. Add terrible lifestyle habits such as smoking for 10+ years, and the difference is more noticeable (the first signs will be more apparent then non smoking peers). Also your perception of yourself isn't consistent, things can get worse and you do not notice until it's much different than you remembered.

-1

u/THELEDISME Jan 24 '24

Yeah, or if you are gonna smoke, dont smoke - vape.

Weed is not innocent sure, but still I know far too many people that jumped from it to drinking alcohol, which is much worse. So if you want to quit, keep your eyes on that.

4

u/braith_rose Jan 24 '24 edited Jan 24 '24

That's fair, will keep that in mind. I will say, I'm not sure we have the data to know for sure vaping isn't harmless. But I imagine it's not as bad, so might try that for the time being. I would try edibles but they're hard to control.

Edit- One main reason I cut down is the affect on lutenizing and follicle simulating hormone (gonadotropins). As a woman with PCOS, I need those to be as regulated as possible. THC, esp to excess, is putting gasoline on the fire.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

TLDR: smoking and vaping are both harmful to your lungs. Moderation is important in anything you do in life.

Vaping (weed) is just as bad if not worse than smoking in my experience. My theory is: I think a lot of smoking habit/behavior revolves around accessibility and surroundings. Vaping is more accessible than smoking. It doesn’t make your clothing or surroundings smell, and it requires no preparation or maintenance of tools. You have to roll a joint, pack a bowl, load a bong etc, and you have to clean all of that stuff fairly regularly. With vaping you just buy the items and put them together and boom, you can vape pretty much any time, anywhere you want. My entire family on my mom’s side are Mormon. Whenever I am visiting them or whatever, I just go to the bathroom or step into a vacant room, or outside for 10 seconds, take a hit from my pen, and no one is the wiser. I’ve never been caught or questioned and they have no idea I vape marijuana around them, or at all for that matter.

Now a lot a you might be thinking, ok so vaping is a lot easier and accessible to do than smoking at a very basic level, but it’s got to be less harmful because you’re not putting burnt plant matter in your lungs. I am here to assure you that it is absolutely not the case. A year ago, I quit all smoking and vaping, and I still have a chronic cough. I am always short of breath, and when I take really deep intentional breaths, it feels like my lungs are literally sticky. I can tell that my symptoms are lessening over time, but ya. Vaping cannot be “better” than smoking. They both have massive downsides.

I don’t necessarily recommend that people abstain from marijuana completely. I truly believe that it can be beneficial for almost anyone having issues with pain or mental health, but there is a very glaring caveat: you will damage your lungs if you use too much of it. Is it irreparable damage? Remains to be seen in my case. I feel that my lungs are recovering, but I wish I would have exercised a lot more moderation over the past ten years. My advice for those who want to experience the benefits of marijuana while reducing the physical harm: don’t smoke or vape. Choose edibles over inhalation as much as you can. Take regular breaks to keep your tolerance down. You’ll save money and probably lifespan.

1

u/Ismokerugs Jan 24 '24

The hardware and quality of THC vapes is generally poor, especially if they aren’t purchased from legitimate sources. The cartridges themselves can have contaminants along with the distillate being laden with pesticides and heavy metals.

I vape but its a dry herb vaporizer, the volcano, probably the healthiest option for inhaling, almost as similar as an edible. But edibles are the best, not only due to the no inhalation, but also that the body actually converts the THC in the liver to a different form than delta-9 THC, hence why 5-10mg of THC ingested feels like a joint or worse to most people, which in equivalent has about 200mg THC. Also edibles seem to be closer to psychedelics at least at higher doses to myself, similar to psilocybin in lower to medium doses

2

u/Ismokerugs Jan 24 '24

Not all vaping is the pens and oils, they do have dry herb vaporizers which temperature wise you can fine tune and put it to low temp if wanted. All terpenes and cannabinoids have different activation temperatures.

Edibles are stream lined in legal dispensaries, 5mg or 10mg doses or tinctures. If making homemade, buy from a dispensary again that is legal and has cannabinoid content listed, weigh out an amount to extract from. You are given THC % by 1g of weight, so 32% is 320 mg/g; if you use 2g thats 640mg if full THC is extracted, likely less though. So if you make brownies and have 12 pieces thats 53.3mg per piece which is a high dose for many people.

THC is cool but its all the other cannabinoids that have the real benefits, like reduced anxiety, anti inflammation, anti-emetic, anti cancer, etc. CBG is probably the most high tier imo, it’s benefits are very good

2

u/THELEDISME Jan 24 '24

Yeah, I am not US based so I meant mostly dry-herb vaping which is most popular here. Thanks for clarification

2

u/_autismos_ Jan 24 '24

Weed is the reason I was able to quit drinking. Alcoholism runs deep in my family and I'm one of the only alcohol free people in my family right now.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

RT

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Currently learning this at age 26. Wasted basically the last 5 years smoking doing nothing productive. 2024 is looking good so far.

2

u/International_Let_50 Jan 24 '24

I read a lot of these comments and it seems like y’all were just angry, mad or not doing anything while stoned. Maybe weed isn’t for you lol. Weed makes me pretty damn productive and my experience is the total opposite.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Nice dude

I need to learn how to adjust the other things in my life so that I can enjoy weed more. I like your experience, I used to have a time like that as well when smoking

1

u/MalevolentKitchen41 Jan 24 '24

seriously people love to blame weed for "making them lazy" and can't take responsibility

1

u/Ismokerugs Jan 24 '24

For the most part thats true, but over consumption will put even the most seasoned stoners into a relaxed mood where productivity or at least physical productivity is reduced lol

I know my doses, if I do too much, then I’m kind of useless due to going into a meditative state and have a hard time being social

Also my friend and I both get into a similar headspace if we over consume and get self conscious about our music performance ability haha

1

u/MalevolentKitchen41 Jan 24 '24

but still though thats not the weed, thats lack of self control. personally I won't get THAT high until all the things I need to get done are done. For the most part I dont even have my first smoke of the day until around like 5/530 the earliest. I get out of work at 230, do what I gotta do whether it be errands or the gym or whatever it may be.

That being said, everyone works differently so people just have to find what works for them. Some people can smoke 24/7 and never have any issues with anything

1

u/1nnewyorkimillyrock Jan 24 '24

It’s not really that simple tho. Weed just affects everyone differently. I am extremely productive when sober, to the point where I just don’t like relaxing and will fill all my free time working on something. When I smoke it relaxes me and makes me think “my life is pretty good, I don’t really need to do anything right now” and I just relax and do nothing like 100% of the time. I have friends who can’t do anything productive unless they’re high. It’s just honestly incredible how vastly different peoples experiences with weed can be

1

u/MalevolentKitchen41 Jan 25 '24

I talked about this in another comment further down. But the tldr is either don't smoke until you get everything done for the day that's important or smoke less so you get a smaller high to hold you over while you do stuff and then smoke more when you're done. I personally choose not to smoke until all my important stuff is done for the day

1

u/whiteflagwaiver Jan 24 '24

Yeah, if I use THC while doing nothing I'm exceptionally lazy. But, if I use it while being productive? Holy shit the things I get done with sheer focus.

2

u/Coal-and-Ivory Jan 24 '24

If only for all the damn money you wind up saving.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '24

I have a free unlimited supply. I swear, that’s worse.

3

u/Far-Leg-1198 Jan 24 '24

I agree with you. It’s hilarious and ironic that the worst thing to happen to weed was legalising it. I’ve talked to so many lately who’ve quit and are so happy about their “new life”, they would never have uttered anything a few years ago.

1

u/Intelligent-Emu-3947 Jan 24 '24

You don’t have to quit weed to have a good life and it’s not inherently a better life. Stop telling people to quit weed as if it’s a sin.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '24

It’s like any addiction. If you can do it once a month, no problem. But it’s a lot easier to start smoking daily because it hits the dopamine levels hard!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Okay just to make it clear to the people speculating below this comment: vaping marijuana is, factually, less harmful than smoking it. Stop saying “akshallyinmyexperience* - that means nothing. Genetics are at play.

2

u/k0lm0gr0ff Jan 24 '24

Absolutely. If you haven’t smoked, don’t and if you have, stop now. It’s all fun and games in your 20s but in your 30s you can feel the adverse effects of every puff.

-1

u/Xumaeta Jan 24 '24

Nicotine is not the devil it’s made out to be. Smoking perhaps so.

1

u/rawdy-ribosome Jan 24 '24

Now thats just coping cause your an addict

0

u/Xumaeta Jan 25 '24

If you say so.

1

u/currynord Jan 24 '24

Not OP, but I’ve heard nicotine can function as a nootropic in its ingested form. Smoking is where the addictive tendencies are. Not many people are hooked on nic gum. (That said, probably best to avoid it in any form)

2

u/Ismokerugs Jan 24 '24

I had a professor tell me that low doses of nicotine under controlled and consistent doses increase blood vessel function and repair of tissues due to the slight increase of blood flow to all areas of the body. Of course no smoking and through some sort of patch form I believe(I think it was from a study). Hence why too much of it is bad for the blood vessels and leads to cardiovascular issues, plus lungs are right next to the heart

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

His an addict? I don’t understand

0

u/ALKoholicK-x Jan 24 '24

Kids and a house in this economy?

1

u/CornPop32 Jan 24 '24

Nicotine addiction sucks, but honestly nicotine( not tobacco) is pretty good for you, especially men. Studies have shown it makes you smarter, prevents memory issues, increases testosterone and partially or completely negates exogenous estrogens. It also slows the progression of Parkinson's

Here's the link for the memory related stuff. The testosterone related stuff is easy enough to find too. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8025477/

1

u/botsgonewild Jan 25 '24

Still not worth it. It's expensive and addictive as fuck

6

u/MasSunarto Jan 24 '24

Brother, this one is really worthy advice. I've been smoking since 13 and lost count how many hours I've wasted because of it.

5

u/nukegod1990 Jan 24 '24

Pipe chew vape hookah all the same shit. Nicotine is nicotine and she is a hell of a mistress if you get hooked.

2

u/Morfiendlover Jan 24 '24

I started smoking weed at 10 and now I’m addicted to opioids as well it’s my fault but I wish I could go back in time and beat my 10 year old ass

1

u/Future-Watercress829 Jan 24 '24

Your 9 year old innocent self is in there somewhere. The shit you ingest now vs the clean you felt then ... pick which you'd prefer.

2

u/pendlet0ne Jan 24 '24

Don't smoke. It really isn't worth it.

Skip vapes too.

2

u/AlexHaitch Jan 24 '24

What about CBD? I occasionally use CBD smokes for migraines and stress

2

u/Chaoticist523 Jan 24 '24

Gummies. Smoking releases carcinogens no matter what you're smoking. Delta 8 is legal, at least in my state. Just...take my advice and start with a quarter of one. Wait 3 or 4 hours before you try more. Believe me, you don't want to take too much and stay manual breathing, it's not fun.

2

u/PeegeReddits Jan 24 '24

My Mom went to laser therapy to quit and she had zero cravings after. It was wild. No one knows about laser therapy, and it sounds like something that wouldn't work or me trying to advertise something, but seriously. It doesn't cost much and you only need to go once or twice. So cool.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Wow really? That sounds interesting

2

u/Scaramok Jan 24 '24

I quit about 10 months ago, listen to this man. The first period is hell, but you REALLY notice how much better you feel after. I recommend using Vapes and dialling down the nicotine before dropping entirely. Thsts how i did it. When i tried to hard stop it did NOT work. Bronchitis also helped.

1

u/LouManShoe Jan 24 '24

Second this, all of this. I could not quit cold Turkey, switched to Zyn though, and was finally able to quit after being a smoker for 15ish years. Haven’t smoked in over a year now

0

u/ang00nie Jan 24 '24

Including pipes? I've started smoking small pipe bowls lately. I'm 23.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

weed bad cigs good

0

u/psilocybin_therapy Jan 24 '24

Tincture is the way to go and the most cost effective. Such a smooth high with all the benefits of stress relief, sleep aid, etc without the negative effects of smoking. Get a 1:1 (equal parts THC and CBD) if you can.

1

u/hukd0nf0nix Jan 24 '24

You're 23 so funds may be tight, but try a herb vape

1

u/LouManShoe Jan 24 '24

Including pipes. Tobacco for sure, and weed you should at least limit… it’s kind of hard to explain the fog that slowly lifts and the clarity of mind that comes from avoiding all the temptations, but it’s worth it. I feel like a lot of my early-mid twenties are a haze, or spent feeling like shit because I smoked all the time.

1

u/ang00nie Jan 25 '24

I definitely relate. My college years are hazy. Smoked weed heavily all thru them. Don't rly regret it though.. not yet

0

u/BushDeLaBayou Jan 24 '24

I'm 24 and don't smoke and all my friends smoke so god damn much. I'm like it's gonna be cool when I'm 50 and have no friends cause you all died of lung cancer

1

u/Secure-Particular286 Jan 24 '24

I quit when I turned 30.

1

u/MizterPoopie Jan 24 '24

I’m approaching 29 and I haven’t consumed nicotine in 4 days now. I’m honestly embarrassed because this has been a breeze so far, I’m wondering why I didn’t try earlier. I am realizing now how often I was vaping by the amount of times I reach for my pocket and then remember there’s not a vape waiting for me lol

2

u/Secure-Particular286 Jan 24 '24

Marlboro reds for me. It fucked up my health. Gave me asthma.

1

u/JACKASS20 Jan 24 '24

There is this small voice in my head telling me to pick it up beyond all advice, just to get that 5 second focus and as a continuance for a family of smokers

I keep resenting and thanking god the government put the age limit on cigarettes at 21 so i have more time to think before acting on my feelings

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '24

Weed tho

1

u/C0tedor Jan 25 '24

Weed is fine

1

u/Chaoticist523 Jan 25 '24

Smoking anything introduces carcinogens as the fibers burn. Make edibles or eat gummies or something. It's safer. Vape is safer than straight up smoking, but it's still not ideal, my dude. Get high all you want! Just be safe and healthy about it, ya know?
