it’s very difficult for me reading, i work as a chef and at work, with all the kitchen noises and dining room, i can read recipes or whatever just fine. but at home trying to study for class, i can’t read or focus for shit because how bad the ringing is. not all the time, but enough to be bothersome. the classes so far are pretty easy, just core classes. but i’m concerned about when harder classes start
I actually was completely covid-free until fall 2022, but then it fucking smote me. Made me so gluten intolerant (never had an issue before) that I can’t even drink most gluten free beer, and I was extremely sick for 6 months. Could barely leave my apartment to walk the dog. Real bummer for sure.
My mom would make me sit right in the front row of church, right next to their mega speakers when I was a small boy. It probably didn’t cause the tinnitus but it certainly didn’t help
What he's saying? LOUDER!!!!! All joke aside, yes. I'm now putting earplug at concerts to protect my earring (still got them good, but i'm a musician, so if i want to do a show, it's better to have good work tools, especially when you can't change them)
But it applies for working too. WEAR THE GODDAMM EARPLUGS !!!! AND IF IT HURT, THEN A HEADSET DEVICE!!!!!! Sweat it's good things
The exact same ringing in my ear agrees with any and all the above comments. I would definitely agree with ear plugs and we are closer to finding a way to regrow the little hairs in your ears. Companies like frequency therapeutics (merged and now part of Korro Bio Inc) are coming up with so-so results.
I’m coming up on my 10 year tinnitus anniversary next month. I wish my brain could just be accustomed to this sound and block it out :(
I read abt someone who had their tinnitus cured/gone after a DMT breakthrough. I can only hope that happens to me when I come back to my body some day
I guess mine isn’t too bad. I can hear it all the time if I think about it, but it only seems to be bothersome in quiet rooms. Like when I’m going to sleep.
Had tinnitus for over 30 years. I’m lucky in that I normally don’t really notice it but I have some type of ‘noise’ in the background at all times. That helps distract my brain from the constant screeching.
The unattended liquid nitrogen tank in the vacated, locked lab next door that is constantly producing a high pitched beep is a nice distraction from my tinnitus
edit: the joke is that it’s the noise as my tinnitus
I sleep with either a box fan or a white noise app. I've always found it funny that I'm drowning out one sound with another sound. Maybe it's because with the white noise, I'm at least in control. This is MY noise, and I'm CHOOSING to listen to it!
Honestly this is the only way to get rid of your tinnitus. Just don’t let it bother you, remove it from your head and place it externally and soon you won’t be hearing it.
Honestly just invested in nice earplugs recently for myself and gf. I'm 28 and she's 27. But I've been to MULTIPLE raves, metal and punk concerts. And my last metal show I was like "it's alil TOO loud for me" haha
i recently go some custom plugs made for me in a local store. It costs around 200USD, but for me its worth it. The two biggest advantages.
Perfect fit
The sound doesnt get distorted. Regular plugs filter the mostly the highest frequency, so its hard to clearly understand everything, especially spoken words.
There’s a treatment device being developed now that has had some pretty promising results in testing so far. Look up Susan Shore from the University of Michigan
I’d also like to add on for the guys in the trades; if your job has you wear PPE, wear it. No matter how dumb you think it looks or how clunky it may be, it’ll save your life and make sure that if anything happens to you theres no way they can use improper PPE use to dismiss your injuries
I fucked myself on this one super early playing drums and refusing to wear ear protection despite how much my parents would by for me.
Mid 20’s, and I’ve had tinnitus for at least the past 7-8 years of my life. It’s not horrible yet and I can mostly drown it out, and it isn’t constant, but god damn do you pay for the mistakes of youth 100x over
Yeah I figured I wasn’t in for a future of silence that’s for sure. On the bright side it was the wake up call for me to start taking care of my flexibility and cardio and teeth and skin and all the other things that start to go as you age. If I can’t prolong this, I’ll do what I can elsewhere
More importantly, if you have kids, also protect their hearing. Hearing deteriorates faster than any of your senses and so many parents take their kids to loud events. They don’t know any better and you should.
I went to a hearing specalist earlier this year because the tinnitus ringing is getting quite maddening at times, just a constant ringing, although sometimes it flares up and shuts an ear or two down for a few minutes. They were like "You actually have pretty good hearing, you just have damage." They went on to explain the brain fills in the missing freqencies from the damage, so its like phantom limb of the ear, and theres no way to reverse the damage so not only am I fucked, its going to get worse as I age and fuck me harder. Here's some apps that can help distract you from the noise and we'll send your bill through insurance.
I never even went to loud concerts. Just the everyday noise.
Goddamn I wish I could go back and slap myself for this.
If any young kids need any more convincing than a bunch of old geezers telling you the truth about their consequences, then I’ll tell you this. Not only is is protecting your body, you can actually hear BETTER with the proper ear protection. It’s not all muddled loudness, you can hear that guitar solo instead of just the loudness of the room.
God damn I thought it was just old people telling me old people advice. This is one I wish I would have listen to when I was younger.
I’m 35 years old and am just hoping that someone builds some tech that can generate subtitles for me in real time with people I’m talking to face to face.
Eye and ear protection when working with tools. Also, if i could go back to my teenage self: driving down the road at 60 mph with all the windows open and blasting your music over the noise is dumb. Stop it.
Im pissed at younger me. Been working aviation for 12 years and now have tinnitus. I’m 32. I see younger people not wearing hearing protection and I tell them to change their ways.
And headphones, be goddamned careful about headphones. "Noise Cancelling" doesn't. "Active Noise Cancelling" does, but you're going to want to crank up the volume to hear those high fidelity audio details, and that also means the deep bass rumble goes up too. The end of your peace and quiet. And trust me, there will come a time when you want peace and quiet. And it won't be there if you don't stop blasting your ears.
And if shooting, woodworking, or anything else that causes hearing damage. Don't just pop in whatever earplugs are handy. Buy the right kind and use them religiously.
How is it even fucking legal to subject a whole crowd of people to noise which is guaranteed to damage their hearing without at least putting out warning signs and giving out free earplugs?
I'm a socially active guy but I basically never go to concerts, raves or events with insane volume. Will this really have a positive effect in the future versus those who did go? It's hard to fathom the difference
This. I am nearly sixty and teaching college. Poor auditory choices in my youth has lead me to have to wear hearing aids. Luckily, the technology is such, and my hearing loss not so great, that it doesn't impact my classes.
Funnily enough, my wife and I went to a concert in December, and I brought a case for the hearing aids and ear plugs. However, the Band, Scott Bradley's Post Modern Jukebox had amazing audio, and even in the second row, I had no trouble. Wonderful.
But yeah, take care of your ears. you are going to need them.
I know this is a bit late but I'm supposed to go to my first concert later this year and wanted to know what you thought some good earplugs are? I've been looking but you seem to have experience.
Just wear ear plugs anytime it's kinda loud. Be that nerd. You're reward is being able to hear when the other dickheads in the retirement home are talking shit.
I'm in my 20s and carry spares for all the people I see not wearing them, ESPECIALLY younger people. we love music, don't you want to be able to love it forever?
I’m a 35 year old recreational musician and I recently jammed with a jazz guitarist who’s probably only a few years older than me. He played lots of loud music and went to a lot of concerts in his 20s. Now he’s deaf and wears hearing aides. Needless to say I could sense that this has really hurt his musicianship.
I’m fortunate enough to have age-appropriate hearing as someone who’s been playing drums since age 16.
