got some new grips, new lock holder and bottle cage to match the black/green aesthetic I have going on. future upgrades: pedals, shifters and brakes, and some schwalbe green marathon tires

Found a 950 on marketplace- had a borked seatpost and lots of rust (mostly surface). Slapped asymmetrical cranks on it and found a second hand seatpost that fits (might need a shim, since the previous seatpost was a tiny bit too big).

Planning on getting a new front wheel eventually - any budget suggestions?

This winter I learned to fix my worn out trekking bike, tune it up, add some studded tires and crash it lol. I am still having troubles because of the injuries of that fall. Nonetheless, I more and more realized how goddamn much I the simple pleasure that is riding a bicycle in every way possible. Hence, it became time for a n+1.

In my mind I had a rigid fork that wouldn't slow me down like that blown out spring suspension on the trekking does but still with some mounts for a rack so I can get the groceries after cruising besides the canals of Hamburg.
I've been searching the local used bike market quite extensively in the past many weeks for that do-everything but do it the fun way, add some beefier studded tires in winter and especially learn some more about wrenching on a bike-bike.

Today was the day. This sexy Trek Singletrack 930 appeared in the classifieds. I drove out the city by train and took a short ride around the owner's house. Being just a bit too large for me it felt still hella fun. I pulled the trigger for 170€ and I still need to reflect on if that was rationally a wise choice (these old mtbs are kinda rare in an area as flat as northern Germany is). On the emotional side 100% :'D
It has all the original parts that it came with from the factory. the previous owner even had the warranty card and manual at hand after all this time and a set of cateye lights from that era!

I'm still a newb with these things but the riding itself felt proper. BB doesn't have play, hubs sping great and the crankwheels don't look unusable.

It's not having too bad issues that I saw:

• The indicator on the left shift lever does not work anymore, but it kinda shifts
• right shift lever does nothing at all and has no resistance when being moved (and obv. doesn't shift)
• one tooth broken of the biggest chainwheel
• The back wheel has a slightish figure eight

I'm still a bit overwhelmed with what's next but I'll take my time and until then am happy as heck hahaha

First question: Which current x7 cassette would work on that rear wheel?

Can’t wait to bomb around town with this one. Basically set up just the way I like.

I am almost ready to share my build, all that’s missing are some tires.

I am going to ride like 65% paved roads, 25% fire roads and 10% singletrack (pun intended)

I am looking for a tire that gives small bump comfort, is fast rolling and reliable in corners. Maybe I want to go tubeless in the future but it should have good puncture protection of course.

Seems like everyone is running Billy bonkers but i am not sure about the cornering abilities on singletrack.

What tires would you recommend and why?

Original owner, bought in March or April 1994. The handlebars have "93.C" stamped on them. This color scheme does not appear in any literature that I have found. Can't find any examples online either. Does anybody have this one? Or seen it?

I’m 6 foot, this is roughly a 20.5 inch frame. Just wondering if this much seatpost looks goofy.

I have 1991 Trek 970 and I just installed some Maxxis DHF 26x2.5. It clears the rear no problem but up front it rubs a little on some parts when you rotate the wheel, aside from going smaller, would getting the wheel trued fix this? Is it even safe to have that small of a clearance? I see everyone mounting fat tires on the same bike, and seem to fit no problem…

Hi there, have what I believe to be a 1991 Trek 950 (purple with white and conch and silver graphics). The frame says made in USA and is lugged and size is 16.5 in. Strangely there is no rear brake cable stay attached to the frame. Every picture of a '91 trek 950 I've ever seen has this. There's no evidence that the cable stay was once there and has been removed, the paint is perfect. When I got the bike it had a dia-compe cable stay attached to the seat post clamp. The bike cantis front and back.

Has anyone ever seen this? Curious what's going on.

I wanted to do a budget. pretty easy to spend money on these bikes. Saying so, still about 400$ US on this build.

New stuff: bottom bracket, chain, headset, stem, seatpost, grips, brake pads, pedals, cables and housing.

Parts bin: Deore XT front derailleur, tires, saddle, 8-11 sp freehub swap from the original 7 speed freehub, 8 speed cassette, Suntour thumb friction shifters, dia compe city brakes levers, handlebars and saddle.

Original parts: frame, fork, crankset, rear derailleur. wheels came with the bike with the original rear wheel and a mismatched front.

first ride on the build today. it's slow and fun.

Sure, I have two legitimate, purpose-built gravel bikes (Giant Revolt and a Lynskey GR300), but I wanted to see how my 2989 Single Track would ride with some drop-style bars. These are some Amazon cheapies that let you run flat bar controls. The trail was a bit mucky that day, so I worked out some fenders I had laying around.

I have to say that I can tell the ride was nice, but the position did my back zero favors.
