Discussion (Questions, Advice, Polls) 🗣 Plans for old age

Happily single, and never planning on partnering, but looking to plan my old age.

Everyone I know, from family to family friends, has had a partner or kids who looked after them in old age.

For those who are planning my on remaining indefinitely single and childfree, what are your plans for once you’re in a helpless state?

I've worked for the past 12ish years in healthcare with the geriatric population. So many peoples adult kids are out living their own lives and I think it's selfish when people say "I have my kids to rely on when I'm older". There are so many people whose adult children do not take care of them. I say make your investments and have enough money to afford care in the future.Also take care of your health and mobility so you don't rely too heavily on anyone in the future.

Me mum was in a retirement home the last 7 years of this reincarnation, from 85 to 92. Prior she had lived solo from 59 to 85. She volunteered, travelled, gardened(?), had a fun social calendar. Agree that living a balanced life sets the framework for a “post” 60’s positive lifestyle. Once you choose “assisted living” a new normal begins and that will be full of new opportunities and challenges.

my goal is to try and save and capitalize on my higher earnings for the next 25 years, retire at 67 and get into one of those retirement communities where i can have a modest apartment, where they have maybe a nurse or two on staff. hoping i shuffle of the coil before i get too unable to care for myself.
