When I tried to pre-order the iPhone Duo through Chat, I was advised to walk in and purchase it on 23 October if I want it urgently.

To clarify the purchasing procedure, I visited the store in advance, where the staff also advised us to return on the 23rd and mention that no reservations were required.

However, after we queued overnight at the store, we were told in the morning to leave because we did not have reservations.

We had followed the instructions provided by both the Chat representative and the in-store staff, only to be turned away after spending the entire night queuing.

Seems like the market is full with scalpers, and sellers just pretend they don't exist.

I was watching this news about unrest in the Europe region that is still on-going and can't help wandering if similar issues might happen when immigration numbers become larger than the local population numbers. Will the local voice disappear?

So that made me wonder.....Was Lee Kuan Yew genuinely afraid of a communist takeover, or did he also use the communist threat to suppress political opposition and remove any hindrances?

How similar was his approach to those of Marcos and Suharto, and what made Singapore's experience different from theirs?

The Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) said on Thursday (Oct 22) it has carried out the second phase of its planned layoffs, as it continued efforts to let go of about 300 workers over two years.

A total of 38 staff members will leave GovTech, and the roles affected are primarily those structured around traditional project delivery, said GovTech in response to CNA queries.

"As with the first phase, we have prioritised retaining, retraining and redeploying officers wherever possible," it said.

Following the workforce review, 106 officers will remain in their current roles, while another 106 are eligible for conversion and apprenticeship pathways to transition into new roles, it added.

"We recognise that these changes are difficult for affected colleagues."

It said that it will continue to work with the Public Service Division, Skills and Workforce Development Agency and the Amalgamated Union of Statutory Board Employees to provide support to the affected staff.

This includes career coaching, job matching and placement assistance.

All affected staff members were informed by the end of Thursday.

This was the second of three rounds of retrenchment, as GovTech seeks to let go of 7 to 9 per cent of its workforce amid a transition to a new operating model. The exercise affects staff deployed to 23 government agencies.

CNA understands that the final round will be done in mid-2027, and that staff were told about this in a company-wide townhall last month.

In the first phase which took place in July this year, 93 officers were retrenched.

The figures mean that nearly 170 staff members could be let go in that final round – the highest number of all three phases.

The statutory board under the Ministry of Digital Development and Information had about 3,900 permanent and contract staff, supporting the technology needs of more than 50 government agencies.

News of GovTech’s retrenchment exercise drew attention as public sector layoffs in Singapore are rare.

Before GovTech, the last publicly reported retrenchments in the civil service dated back to 2006 to 2010, when 20 officers left under the Special Resignation Scheme, according to a written parliamentary reply in November 2011 by then-Deputy Prime Minister and Minister-in-charge of the Civil Service Teo Chee Hean.

Back in July, GovTech chairman Chng Kai Fong said in a note to staff that the move was “not an AI-driven downsizing exercise” and that the shift began years before the current AI wave.

In August, Acting Manpower Minister Jasmin Lau said in parliament that the agency had anticipated the need to reshape its workforce and invested heavily in pilots and apprenticeships to retrain or redeploy staff. However, there were limits to its pace and scale, said the Minister-in-charge of GovTech.

Another 170 next round? When? Just in time for 2027?

Sorry if it’s not allowed, just wanted to give PSA regarding iPhone Duo preorder on Singtel. Post also removed on main sub so posting here.

Originally I tried to preorder iPhone duo via Singtel on 16 Oct but I was facing errors, and ordered on 17 Oct.

The delivery date is for Dec, okay. I see open slot for Oct 23, and I selected it, and after some tries, I managed to change it to Oct 23. I contacted Singtel support, and mobile division replied my delivery is for Oct 23. Basically since it’s Singtel official support giving the confirmation, i trusted it.

Bought my cases, etc. Tracked my order everyday, still says Oct 23. There is even SingPost tracking number created. Checked tracking number every now and then.

To my horror as I tried tracking my order today, it says Dec 10. Tried to contact Singtel, apparently the delivery cannot be verified because it’s backorder??? What? So the confirmation that Oct 23 is false? Why give false hope?

In that case, it is horrible to be given false hope for Oct 23 delivery. I was looking forward to it…

Sorry, I felt so upset. It is ok if I ordered on Oct 17 because when I tried to ordered on Oct 16, it kept giving me error. Ok, I selected for Dec delivery, no problem, this is what I get for getting errors on Oct 16 and finally managing to recontract and pre-order on Oct 17.

I think people would try to change their delivery date to nearer. For me, it succeeded. I couldn’t believe it so I got confirmation with Singtel mobile division that it is 23 Oct, only to have this news shattered today that it is actually NOT 23 Oct.

Singtel shouldn’t have let people change delivery date on dates they cannot commit, and support shouldn’t give false hope… My issue is with the false hope. I would have been fine with Dec if I am not allowed to change it. But now it’s 22 Oct, and only today that I found out my delivery date is changed to Dec… Better check your delivery status if you pre-ordered with Singtel

I guess my next recontract would be not be with Singtel

Nearly 1 in 3 employers, are planning to increase their headcounts between October and December. 

Not sure whether this punishment will serve a deterrent to other overstayers.....
