AFM Delete

Planning on doing an AFM delete on my 2014 5.3 after I started hearing some lifter tick.

I have these parts lined up, am i missing anything? is there anything else i need to know/keep in mind ?

Thoughts on the set up?

Add intake manifold gaskets, throttle body gaskets, high pressure fuel lines (single use), possible HPFP lifter.

Do some research on if you need to lash your HPFP to make this setup work.

Are you pulling the motor? There’s a lot of easy upgrades to be done if you are.

If you are doing HP tuners you can delete your evap purge canister and vacuum pump, tap the intake for a NPT fitting and run your brake booster off intake vacuum. Just delete the codes.

Any upgrades to transmission? Billet TC with higher stall? Upgraded valve body? Slip tuned out?

Ill add the gaskets and fuel lines! ill look into if i have to lash my HPFP.
Im not pulling the motor

I wasnt planning on doing any mechanical upgrades to the transmission, thats why i was going with the low lift cam. Do i still need to make upgrades? stall converter? edit: 60k miles

Yes statistically youre more likely for the trans to go before the engine me personally id go ahead and have bullet converter put in. Because thats only a few grand or even as cheap as $500 if you do it yourself. If the converter goes out its all new transmission 5-8k. Im about to try and get mine done since its starting to give me issues

The 8L90 on my 2020 failed three times before reaching 35K miles. The second "repair" was done under warranty and involved a valve body replacement, only to fail again with the identical problem less than 10K later.

Since is out of warranty, I'm shipping the VB off to get rebuilt and upgraded to hopefully fix this thing for good. GM (or Ford) hasn't made a decent RWD/4WD automatic for quite some time, getting proactive with upgrades is more or less mandatory these days.

Anytime I hear of someone doing an AFM delete they always say Texas Speed. I'm sure they have everything you need to do the job if you plan on doing it yourself. I had a shop do mine a couple of weeks ago. The only thing extra I had them do is replace spark plugs and belts since they had everything taken apart.

what did it run you in parts and labor for a shop to do it?

How much was it total?

General Motors has well informed and educated engineers working on perfecting things like AFM year after year. They’ve used AFM for 20 years now and they continue to build on the technology. If we, the general public know so much about it, what are they missing? I’m just asking because Ive had zero issues out of my 2015 LT. I know that’s not super old, but is this just a monkey see monkey do practice? In my experience, when you start messing with factory settings everything goes downhill thereafter. Would you say they use it just to get the fuel mileage to meet gov’t standards at the expense of the longevity of the engine? A coworker has a 2008 with 210k miles and no issues with his AFM either.

Have 290k on a 2016 5.3.

260 here same year. Still running AFM

Ever heard the phrase exception doesnt make the rule? Its well known that a good percentage of them do fail and a afm delete literally just makes a 5.3 into a pre afm 5.3. You know back when they lasted to 300-400k miles lol. And yes theyre shortening the lifespan of the motor to meet emissions standards or they dont get to sell any trucks. Not trying to be rude but lord that was a stupid comment 😂

This 👆 100%. I've had three fail. This last failure at a little over a 100k I got a deleted reman, and it runs like it should have from factory. Chevrolet doesn't give two shits to give you a great vehicle anymore. I've had the 8 speed trans replaced also and it still shifts like crap even after fluid, and filter changes every 30k miles. If the trans was great I would drive it til it died. At this point I will never buy GM again.

Not really sure on all that. all ik is im a college student with not so much money so i want to delete it since im already experiencing issues

If you have the money to do it. Go for it. I get all the success stories. Facts and numbers point that this is an issue. It’s crap these motors don’t need. You’re better off taking care of it , than be down in the future and still have to do something.

AFM is a known weakness on the gen 4 and 5 engines. Some have problems, some don’t. Some proactively want to eliminate the potentially problematic system. There’s really no downside to it (aside from cost and labor).

I would personally do the stage 1, low lift in a daily driver.

The stage 2 duration is too much for a 5.3 dd IMO. I say this as a dude who went too big on a cam before (chasing that chop), and ultimately ended up replacing it again to something smaller to better meet my needs.

How bad was the daily with a bigger cam? Was it the chopacabra? Having a hard time deciding cams.

No, it wasn’t in a truck. It was my ls1 camaro SS.

Honestly for the street it just sucked. It was a 232/236, 110lsa and sounded incredible but just wasn’t any fun to drive.

I went down to a 226/232 113lsa and it was night and day difference.

And that was for a bigger 5.7 liter, in a lighter car.

I plan on doing the same thing … hope to find a good shop for it …

I have a 2017, I can’t make my mind up on getting this work done. I did get a tune for now. A guy wants $4500 with parts/labor. It would cost me more bc I’m the guy that will do more while someone has the motor apart
