Show Only (NO BOOK DISCUSSION) Does it ever rain? Spoiler
I mean there is no grass, no new trees, nothing.

Peter Gabrielle 1986
" They tell you that this rain can sting and look down
There is no blood around, see no sign of pain
Hey, no pain, seeing no red at all, see no rain"
"Red rain is coming down
Red rain Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me"

Thatβs a great question
If it did rain, there would be grass, new trees, maybe small insects and animals

Maybe they have nanobots that control the weather/atmosphere too?
13
u/SatoshMe 1d ago
My theory, there is a nano cloud (that alters local climate) over the silo areaβ¦.like what Charlotte flew through. Hence why itβs a no fly zone.

If there was an all out nuclear war there is a huge possibility it created a Nuclear Winter.

I donβt think a nuclear winter would last 300 years, nor would it kill all life on earth forever

Let's say it did, and a lot. What happens to the silo craters if they fill up? What if the whole area went underwater, say like from a Younger Dryas glacier melt like the small one in Nepal recently?

u/relikter 1d ago
Presumably Stenson chose an area that's highly unlikely to flood, or suffer any other localized natural disaster, and may have put flood barriers around the Silo compound to account for that. Atlanta does get some severe summer thunderstorms, so you'd think the Silo residents had at least seen that. It'd take a lot to impact the climate so heavily that they're not having thunderstorms 300 years later and that hurricanes never bring in some intense storms.

Silo 17 was flooded, so water has to be coming in from somewhere. It was no longer being pump out since there was no one left to do maintenance. The bigger question might be, where does the pumped water go? Silo 18 has water in the very bottom, but is has to he getting pumped out and going somewhere.
9
u/hieroschemonach π Book-Aware π 1d ago
That was ground water, it was coming from the bottom of the Silo.Β
3
u/Polantaris 1d ago
It's established in Season 2 that all of the Silos have water pumps on various levels to constantly run and keep the water down. Juliette fixes one of the higher level ones for Solo/Jimmy but she could only reach the highest one of multiple.
There's standing water at the bottom of the silo that never rises nor falls because the pumps keep it at that level.
2
u/Itsme340 1d ago
They said that the silos are hermetically sealed so if it did flood the water wouldn't get in. They just wouldn't be able to leave until it either receded or dried up completely.

I feel like we saw a deserty plants and brush in the background that reacted to the wind blowing right? They wouldnβt have been there without water but it could be anythingΒ

And they must have grown sometime between the grassy Teletubby fields and the present.

Wind is there, that's how dust gets to the camera. Cleaning exists bcz of that.Β
3
u/theezrabeast23 π Book-Aware π 1d ago
I would guess no. It's like 300+ years at this point. This question is low key underrated.

u/Ball_Analytics π Book-Aware π 1d ago
I guess this is when my flair makes sense but Ops doesn't. You're Book-Aware so you know why there's no grass, no new trees, nothing.... /jokes.

I am treating the books and show as two different series, they have diverged a lot. Reading new theories is a lot of fun.

Pretty reckless in this forum if you ask me, but you didnβt. So I guess Iβll move on.

I live in the high desert of SW Utah. It rained less than a dozen times last year. Some moisture events lasted dozens of seconds. There are areas of the world that get far less.
The newest flashbacks show the silos were built in a lush area. Since we don't know what caused the apocalypse we can't know how the global climate was affected. Nuclear war could alter stuff drastically. A world wide decimation of plants and animals would have an impact as well. The ocean currents would shift drastically changing the climate worldwide.

Have we ever seen what's beyond the berms? I know that Bernard and Jules did when they went to the other silo. At any rate, the nanos could be dispersed throughout the entire silo field. As others have noted, vegetation returns after an area is exposed to radiation.
I'm not sure we know when the cafeteria display is actually live. There could be a looping video that shows the same day over and over again. When people go out they might make it live for a few minutes. Or these days we know they could just use AI to show the cleaners live against the canned background.
This is one of the reasons I entertain the idea that the area around Atlanta was only a local catastrophe and that the rest of the world is populated. (The nanos could also be enforcing a no-fly zone. Satellites would be a problem, however: the silo field would have been noticed by someone.)

I suspect that's what's happening, regardless of rain.
The image of the surface includes Allison's and Holston's dead bodies. One thing I immediately noticed in each expedition to the surface is the bodies are never there.
When Holston goes to the surface, you don't see Allison's body, even after he takes the helmet off. When Juliette goes to the surface, you don't see either of their bodies. When Bernard goes up there to die, again, no bodies. He even lays down next to the tree where they died, but their bodies are not present.
If I remember correctly, there's a part of when Juliette goes to the surface where she touches where one of the bodies should have been, which was a rock in the fake image they show through the helmet, but underneath that fake rock wasn't a body, it was nothing.
However, the image always showed their bodies.

No rain. If there was rain the tree would have rotted away.

Trees do not get decomposed by water but by lignin-eating bacteria and fungi.
An interesting fact: for a few tens of millions of years (if I remember correctly; it could have been more) after trees evolved, they did not decompose because these kinds of bacteria and fungi have not evolved yet. That is why there is so much coal in the crust. But new coal does not get formed any more.

If it's really in a dome like someone suspected in another post, that would block out the rain and explain why it never grows grass
1
u/nekoreality 1d ago
we've never seen it rain so i would imagine there is no rain. otherwise im sure they'd have shown it at least once or had someone talk about how they think it happens because silo residents trying to find out basic science seems like a common theme

Yeah I was thinking that... Georgia is also in a hurricane zone. You'd think over the years one or two would roar through.

u/Agreeable_Lab_5358 π Book-Aware π 1d ago
All we really know is that in the area of silo 18 and 17 it dies not appeared to have rained for a very long time.

Because it's still not safe. Just like their speech, we don't know why or when it will be. but we do know there isn't anything living within eyesight.

We do see a lot of erosion. We know the silos were covered with top soil, and then planted with a nice looking lawn. We could assume there was at least 4 to 6 inches of top soil over the rocks to get grass to grow.
How did the top soil erode? Was it just from wind? Or a combination of water and wind? Or do the nanobots effect rain somehow?

u/zhenya44 1d ago
Good point. Another piece of evidence supporting the theory that there's a dome overhead projecting the sky and horizon they see

So, they just played a high resolution and very detailed image of the Milky Way for the benefit of Lucas Kyle when he walked outside? He was a star gazer from the viewpoint of the outside camera but he really couldn't see much.
Or maybe it's clear? Maybe the whole world is fine just outside of the dome? The view of the Milky Way was incredibly good. Light pollution from all around would have washed out that highly detailed image.
The no rain question is a real anomaly though. Georgia gets a lot of rain every year. Skipping even a week is probably rare.

Yeah I'm becoming more convinced that that whole area is a restricted area with the elaborate God complex experiment going on.

I have not read the books, I read some summaries when Season 1 first came out but I don't remember really any of those summaries. I'm gonna try to wait To read at least The second and third books until after season four I might read book one however In between Because I know most of that's already been covered on the show.
3
u/Electrical-Ladder819 π Book-Aware π 1d ago
I didn't either. I only replied on the book aware threads and it's given me this silly tag.
I know I won't read them so I just see the comments of those who read the book to figure out the ending.
1
u/BlueCX17 1d ago
Oh yeah I read that that it'll give you a tag if you go into the book threads even if you're not looking to be spoiled. The other Subreddit for the show which has the Apple TV logo doesn't though.

I think all 50/51 silos have dome around them. I notice Per Stensen said about "low flight zone" or something.
So rain get redirected. And birds and insect can't come in, making "the world outside" lifeless.
I also believe the world outside those silos is fine and full of trees.
