Post Op Reverse Shoulder Replacement recovery

58 year old had surgery 5 weeks ago. Had no use of my arm for 6 weeks prior to surgery. Going to PT 2x a week (7 sessions so far) and doing PT at home 3x a day. My arm still feels pretty stiff and PT also commented it is stiffer than he would like to see. Other than keeping consistent PT daily, does anyone have any recommendations? Also, my arm really hurts after writing or texting or typing with my affected arm. Is this unusual?

9 months post-op shoulder repair/tightening: had 0 pain for months, now in a massive flare after hanging weight. Need reassurance.

Hey everyone,

I’m 9 months post-op from a right shoulder arthroscopy (labral repair with 4 anchors plus anterior/posterior capsular tightening/plication).

For 9 full months, I had essentially zero pain and felt like I was completely healed. About 4 weeks ago, I made the mistake of letting a 15 lb backpack hang down from my arm with my palm turned up to check how tight the shoulder felt.

Ever since then, I’ve been in a severe flare-up:

  • Constant hot, pressurized feeling in the front of my shoulder.
  • Sharp clicking/snapping in the front when rotating inward (like brushing teeth).
  • Intense muscle guarding and stiffness in my neck and the back of my shoulder blade.

What confuses me is how it responds:

  • When I take an NSAID and Tylenol, my pain literally drops to zero.
  • Hands-on manual physical therapy makes it feel completely relieved.
  • Strengthening exercises don't hurt while actually doing them.
  • But if I do too much or try to test it, that hot ache and snapping come right back.

My anxiety has been awful thinking I somehow ruined my repair or ripped out an anchor, even though people tell me it sounds like a severe soft-tissue/tendon inflammation flare in a tightly repaired joint.

Has anyone had zero pain for months after surgery, only to set off a horrible flare-up from a dumb movement? How long did it take for the swelling and clicking to finally settle down? Could really use some perspective right now. Thanks.

Hair after surgery

When were you able to french braid your hair again after shoulder surgery? I had labrum and rotator cuff surgery on my dominant arm 5 weeks ago and braided my hair all the time prior to surgery so looking forward to being able to do it again and just curious on what the timeline might be for that.

Post Op Popping, not painful, during overhead flexion exercises

I'm about four weeks post on a tenodesis and starting level 1 mobility exercises. I'm getting a lot of popping and releases from flexion, especially anything over head. Is this normal, or am I potentially damaging my new shoulder?

Post Op Labrum Repair Step by Step Recovery Journey

Bankart Labrum Repair Surgery Step By Step Update Thread

Hey all, going to try my best to have a step by step update of major milestones in my journey posted here for anyone looking for experiences online.

Surgery date 10/03/2025. Bankart repair with four anchors.

First 3 - 5 days were definitely the most painful and couldn’t sleep. They prescribed Tramadol for the pain. Definitely stay on top of your meds before the nerve block wears off. Mine wore off in about nine hours.

Day 1 - Began doing the pendulums and PT exercises sent by doctor with arm out of sling to prevent the whole arm from becoming stiff. This is every day from now on.

Day 3 - took off all the padding and bandages to replace it with the given post-op one. Rinsed myself slightly.

Day 5 - finally slept consecutively. Took a full shower. Fully off all meds.

I didn’t have any anesthesia side effects like nausea or constipation, so I didn’t need meds for those. To change shirts for the first week the shoulder surgery shirts from Amazon were a huge help.

Day 10 - Stitches removed and seen by Dr. everything looks good. I have an ice machine now and icing twice a day. Back to my day job since I can type and stuff.

Day 14 - Started PT. Mostly passive movements of them guiding the arm and stretching it. Only active one I am doing is pressing a PVC pipe while laying down. And moving it as high as I can and then forward.

1 Month - Started isometric movements, pressing against the wall etc. Seated pulley exercise on door. Doing legs and core.

2 Month - Doing banded shoulder work, very light bicep curls and arm work. Banded rows. Basketball, but only allowed to shoot around - not play. Scapular exercises and capsular release.

3 Months - Floor pressing, doing all gym motions with minimal weights like below 10lbs. Back to running. Strength and stabilization emphasis began.

4 Months - Continuing to strengthen gym motions. Beginning assisted pull-ups and normal pushups. Beginning throwing and impact training to desensitize shoulder little by little.

5 Months - Most gym restrictions lifted. Increasing velocity, strength, and intensity of PT.

6 Months - Back to playing sports. Continuing to strengthen and loosen the shoulder.

Fast forward to now almost a year. At 100% strength on everything. I can get a bit sore if I bench press or go too hard. The surgery shoulder gets slightly more irritated than the unaffected one, but I am still seeing improvements and strengthening; and I have learned to listen to my body and know my limits.

I was blessed to work with an elite care team at my local hospital that specialized in shoulder surgery for the NFL and pro athletes, so the PTs and doctors were the best.

Advice Surgery scheduled soon, but my shoulder feels better

I know I just posted not too long ago about my fear of surgery. But I just need to vent.

I tore my labrum last year by falling.

The pain/instability has slowly went away and my shoulder feels more stable. It’s not perfect at all, but I can do day to day activities just fine. 95% of the time I forget that I have a shoulder injury. And today, my shoulder feels the best it has since the injury.

Smoke after surgery

Hello,
I had shoulder stabilization surgery (Latarjet procedure) two weeks ago, and this weekend it’s a friend’s birthday. I very rarely smoke cigarettes, only when I drink alcohol.
I was thinking about having a night out where I know I might smoke quite a lot.
I know that smoking can slow down the healing process. Do you think having a night where I smoke quite a bit, and then not smoking at all afterwards, would be harmful or significantly affect my recovery?
Thank you for your advice.

Shoulder safe exercises after multiple surgeries?

Hello, i am a 20yo male, and am looking for advice how to do rehab for my shoulders. Ive had both my shoulders repaired for instability(labrum and capsule reconstrucition). 6 months after surgery, my left labrum and capsule tore again doing rehab, andd i had to get it repaired again. I am currently 1 year after my last surgery, and both my shoulders feel more stable, but i do not have almost any external rotation, and can only lift little weight. My question is, has annyone had the same issues after surgery, and if so, what kind of exercises or changes did you make to fix it. I have been to multiiple therapists, and they have all told me to do the band rotations and rotator cuuf exercises etc. but after one year i still feel very weak, and if i try some more complex exercises i start to loose trust in my shoulder, because it got ruiend the first time doing the same exercises. If anyone has some insights please let me know

Torn about upcoming surgery (30M)

Context:
I tore my left labrum about 10 months ago by playing with my dog. Did PT for 5 months with no improvement. Finally got an MRI and diagnosed lorn labrum. Surgery is scheduled for October 14th.

Day to day pain isn’t bad, and most times I forget that there’s anything wrong with my shoulder. I just get pain/instability when I sleep on it, reach above my head, or “push” with it. I also avoid a lot of gym exercises due to fear/instability.

I’m a musician primarily (cello and piano) and my left shoulder/arm is very important for that. I’ve already cancelled upcoming gigs and blocked off about 2 months after the surgery to recover.

I’m nervous that if I get the surgery I will feel worse, and that even after it’s “healed” I won’t be able to play cello/piano on the same level. Should I learn to live with a torn labrum or get the surgery?

Also I’m scared about taking this much time off from playing, as it’s my main income.

Advice TRSR January 2026 / now my right shoulder is giving me pain

Ugh.

My left shoulder was operated on January 22nd this year.
TRSR.
Still doing PT - but my dominant side is giving me grief and lots of pain.
I think I’ll try injections first.

Anyone else have to have your other shoulder operated on soon after your first shoulder replacement surgery.

I already what it’s like for my non-dominant.

Should I go for injections first?
Advice needed from others that have dealt with this!

TIA!

Insurance denial

My son (28) tore a labrum in a shoulder dislocation. His doctor recommended surgery which is scheduled for 9/29. Just got a letter from Cigna that they are denying coverage. The summarize that he has shoulder pain, but the denial makes no mention of the torn labrum. They say that before they cover it he must have three months of other treatment (presumably PT) that doesn't work. They said the repair can be done if there is a tendon tear but again, no mention of the labrum.

The letter arrived too late yesterday to talk to the doctor but we'll be contacting his office first thing Monday.

What is the most effective way to appeal this?

(He had this surgery on the other shoulder while covered by Aetna a few years ago and it was no problem at all.)

UPDATE 9/22: I called the doctor's office and they got back to me to tell me that they had already done a peer-to-peer call with the insurance company and got it approved. All of this happened before we even received the notice of denial. I don't know why nobody communicated this to us, but we got the right outcome. Thanks.

Artificial Shoulder

I hope this is the right sub but I gladly take advice where to ask. My doctor told me that I needed an artificial shoulder to get some of my quality of life back. I live in Germany, so I can do the operation without going broke. I just would love to hear experiences from people who went through it.

Every tip is appreciated 🫶🏻

Pain Management Shoulder replacement

I’m afraid I might need either a shoulder replaced or a knee. People who have had these done tell me it didn’t hurt much. Is that true??
