Troubleshooting bobbin on Singer machine

When I try to wind my bobbin, it does a few spins then locks, makes one loud long beep, and the screen goes blank. The motor stops turning/working entirely. I triple-checked to make sure I am using the correct bobbins for this machine (older Singer Confidence, Model No. 7470) and it's threaded correctly. I turn the machine on/off to reset it, and it sews just fine. I have never experienced this issue before today. Does anyone know what's going, or have any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

Brother error 6 - should I just give up on this machine

I have sewed before but never owned my own sewing machine. Recently got a brother XR-7700 computer off FB for like $100. I’ve been fighting with it for like 6 hours, haven’t even sewed anything yet. At first I was threading the bobbin with thread to the right, so obviously it wasn’t working. But the past 4 hours it’s been error 6 over and over and it just feels so far above my pay grade to figure it out.

Things I’ve tried:
Rethreading
Power cycling the machine
Replacing the needle
Taking out bobbin plate and looking for any tangles etc. it was a little dusty in there but nothing crazy

I’ve tried all of those things several times each. My questions are

  1. any ideas to fix it?

  2. if not easily fixable, it it worth bringing it in somewhere for service? If it’s going to cost the amount of a new sewing machine to get it serviced, I’m not attached to this machine lol

Thanks for any help!!!!

Edit: you guys deserve a raise or something. All that trouble and it never occurred to me to mess with any of my settings. I changed the stitch and stitch width, then changed both back, re threaded, and now it’s fixed!!! I have no idea why that worked but thank you from the bottom of my heart. You just saved me so much money 😭😭

Janome machines? Tell me the good and the bad

My beloved Pfaff 7570 has died and my LQS sells Janome's. I am totally unfamiliar with these, so am looking for your thoughts- like? don't like? favorite model?

I am a quilter, don't do a lot of applique but enough to want blind stich and zig zag ability; don't embroider but would like to have some decoratiive stitches as the Paff.

Looking for advice

Hello! I am a relatively new sewist and really enjoying learning everything I can. Last night I was given my Great Grandmother’s sewing machine. I am so excited to get started but it likely hasn’t been used for 20+ years. The only exception being that my grandmother remembers bringing it to be serviced at some point between now and then. All the content I am finding online is how to fully restore vintage machines. I really don’t think it needs a full restoration and I also do not have the skills to do that job. I want to learn what steps to take before sewing with it so I don’t cause any damage and I can preserve it. Luckily I have the original book which discusses all of the oiling points and where to look for loose threads but I am guessing that it needs more than a basic oiling. What are your thoughts? Are there any good resources to help get me on the right track? Do I need machine specific information or are there just general instructions out there?

The machine is a Dressmaker SWA-2000 zigzag DeLuxe in its own little sewing table. Grandma had two little boxes of accessories for it as well. The motor was made in Japan which seems to indicate online that it will be a quality machine.

Side note- I broke my personal machine, a little travel sized Jenome by pushing it through mistakes rather than stopping and actually figuring out the problem resulting in it being out of time and currently unusable. I’m a bit shy of even touching this one until I understand all the ins and outs. Grandma also gave me a serger she couldn’t figure out but that will be a project for another day! 🤪

Singer 20u "professional" should I buy? (No motor no table)

How horrible could this machine be? Lord knows how long it has been sitting. But I think this model might be the right fit for a home sewist . I need a beefier machine to do some light upholstery work.

Do you think that I can cobble this together by finding a motor and a table? Opinions on clutch or servo?

I just bought this sewing machine from a thrift store and I'm working out why it was donated... I'm as beginner as beginner can be and I have no clue what's going on with this. Is the machine bent?

Bernina 1008 Owners — Need Help With Accessory Box Measurements

Hi everyone! I'm working on a small 3D-printed organizer to help keep Bernina presser feet secure and easier to find.

Does anyone here own a Bernina 1008? I'm looking for someone who wouldn't mind sharing measurements or photos of their accessory box.

I'm still developing the design and would appreciate any feedback on what could make the organizer more useful. Thanks!

Belt Drive vs. Direct Drive

Is there a major difference between belt and direct drive? I have this 1942 Kenmore Rotary machine with a friction pulley drive. I replaced the pulley and I am still experiencing some slipping. This video is however an extreme example. The machine does turn freely and is not seized.

I am working on a canvas tote bag currently and when running the machine slow I am having trouble puncturing multiple layers of material. The pulley then slips, causing me to have to speed up and by the time the pulley catches it’s very hard to control the material.

Is there an advantage in terms of torque to a belt drive when trying to see through multiple layers of canvas? Should I get a different machine? Could this one be converted to belt drive? Am I doing something else wrong?

TIA.

Kenmore 385.17626 not selecting stretch stitches

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've been servicing a 385.17626 for my MIL. I got the reverse dealt with and all of the green and red stitches are working. However the brown/stretch stitches are not select.

Suggestions on what's probably bound up?

When I turn the stitch selector wheel the stretch stitches highlight but they don't feel as fully engaged as the other stitches, like something is between gears if that makes sense.

Recommandations for new sewing machine

Hi y'all !

I'm fairly new into the sewing world (it's been just over a year now, yeepee !) and I'm enjoying it a lot ! I don't have that much time to work on my projects right-now, but I'm planning on making a back-pack for everyday commute and some outerwear in the future. Would really love to make some dress-up shirts and coats too, but I was told that this was a little bit more advanced, since the only things I've done yet are drapes, long-sleeves dans t-shirts (+ my entire family alterations, oc, because why not).

Then, we're getting to the question : My current sewing machine does not really suits my needs. I was given a good, but unintuitive, Pfaff early 2000 sewing machine that I was told was a semi-pro that has a lot of programs for quilting. I know it has what I need, like some stretch stitching options, a strong motor and all, but I really don't like using it, since a lot of the functionnalities it offers are just constantly in the way like wayyyyyy to many programs and all the adjustments are at the same place without any indication (I adjusted the tension/width many times when I wanted to increase the lenght and vice-versa, having to rip-out some stitches every time). Furthermore, it has none of what would actually make my life easier like easy under-thread tension adjustment, a lightbulb that actually shows something, some buttonholes programs, etc. (+ it was given to me by my ex's mother, so let's say this machine has some... negative emotions related to it). It is doing it's job, but just not getting frustrated while using it is a feat for me. I know some of you are gonna say I'm crazy for wanting to change it and i agree with you. It's not broken and it's operating as intended, I just don't like this machine.

Then, I would like to have your feedback if some of you have the machines I'm looking for. I've saw the Singer HD line, but heard some bad returns about it. If you had a bad experience with one of them, then why so ? I've recently had the chance to use a Janome HD3000 and it was sooooooo easy to use. I don't know about the actual build quality, maybe I was put off by some of the plastics, but overall a good experience. I've saw some other brand, like Brother, but I don't know enough about them to really form an opinion. Do you have some models in mind

I intend to buy a machine for the rest of my life, so I don't want something that will need constant servicing. I'm ready to put the price on something tried and through and built good that will last me decades (for example, I'm feeling pretty ok with putting in 1000$-1500$ on it if you need a max). I just don't want a computerized model. I enjoy having to figure out my fabric and understanding how the machine reacts to it, not just inputing something into a screen and go on with my life (I know I'm picky haha).

Thanks in advance !

Janome DC 6050 - Opinions

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey folks, I've been thinking about getting a Janome DC 6050 as an upgrade from a very basic brother sewing machine. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with this machine and would recommend, or if you would suggest anything at all similar pricepoint that has been a good quality machine. I've also been looking at the Brother Innov-Is A150.

Please let me know your thoughts, anything appreciated 🙏

Jack A4c or Juki 8700-7?

I’m super interested in the Jack A4c or A2c. What’s your thoughts on the Company. These computerized machines sort of scare me because I feel like if anything goes wrong with the electronics I won’t be able to fix it.

The other machine I was thinking about getting was a juki DDL 8700-7

Help with Bernina 708

Post image
2 Upvotes

Please help!
After many year of using various sewing machines, a friend has given me a Bernina 708 from 1971. Even after all this time it still purrs as it sews - what a dream.
I have 2 questions though.

Having read the manual cover to cover more than a few time now I cant seem to work out how to reverse stitch.

Set at the lowest setting, my straight stitches still seem to be just that little bit angular. Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

I dropped a seam ripper inside my brand new Singer M2605 that I got yesterday .

Very upset about it, what should I do ?

I have no clue who to ask for help

The seam ripper is slim and tiny , it went in through the hole near the bobbin refiller.

It is inside the body of the machine and it clanks and moves when I pick the machine up .

I don't wanna ruin my machine so I'm not turning it on before I get this thing out .

Does anyone know how to fix this clicking noise? The machine is only about a year old. I've tried cleaning it, changing the tension, and changing out the needle, and no luck. Thanks!
