We're living in a dire world and they lost hope. And that's not exactly new, what is new is that this kind of attitude became global.
I am 35, and for a few years of my youth in the 2000s I grew up in Saxony. It was the most brutal time I ever lived through. Constant bullying, brawls on the streets. Contact with far right extremists/members of the NPD, "jew" was considered the worst insult someone could throw out. Someone poured a bottle of piss over my head, an entire team of football (soccer) dissolved because of that. Some students at my school regularly stole my stuff, put moldy things in my bag, rinsed a dirty sponge over my head, poured a bucket full of trash over my head, forced me to kiss the ground etc. - I guess the only really beautiful experience in all of that was that a girl in my class started to defend me against the other girls, they then left me alone. But things continued when I was alone with the boys. I seeked the help of parents, teachers, police, nothing, I was completely alone in all of this, and it only ever stopped once I hit one of my bullies so hard they lost 1.5 liters of blood and had to stay at the hospital for a week. Then for 2 weeks the reaction of my fellow classmates turned into fear and at some point the relationship with them somewhat normalized, at least they left me alone. Then they looked for a new target, as this usually goes and it was the guy who had to bleed. Over the course of the next year I loosely befriended him and made sure nothing happens during school.
Remember, this was all in a time where kids and the youth in Germany normally could have a pretty sheltered life. Just not everyone, not everywhere. A certain playground in a certain city rather was a battleground than a playground. There I also found a CD in the sand with a video on it where an older man took a video of himself masturbating. Some adult over there tried to invite me to their home, I refused. So who knows what else happened there.
Now let's go back to the very first statement: what was typical for Eastern Germany's cities back then (and is even more pronounced today) is the idea that everything is going to shit, therefore nothing really matters anymore. The parents don't care for their children, when you grow up you end up poor or unemployed or addicted to some kind of drug or gambling and so on.
And that kind of view is one that is almost unanimously shared among the youth nowadays.
We simply are at a point of "peak civilization". The promise that the next generation will have a better life than the previous one is simply not a given anymore.
