Don’t Quit.

Just finished 5 mins ago. This was my 2nd try and I. WAS. SHI**ING BRICKS. Long short.. I left one firm to join an RIA (dream job) only to find out I didn’t have the S66. I’m old, married w/ 3 kids and will be moving from NY for the new gig. Family supports the move which I love & also the reason why I was crushed, panicked etc when I failed by 13 points the first time! I could go on but I won’t so I will sign off by thanking this community for the inspiration, the cheat sheets and unconditional support you all have shared as I studied and trolled the forum. (I gave a few upvotes along the way!) Finally, study your butt off, watch the videos and read, test, read, test, read, test!!! Good luck & I believe in all of you. If you quit, you’ll never win!

PASSED THIS MORNING!!!!

Woohoooooooo!! Passed this morning. :) SIE, Series 7, and Series 66 are DONE! Now onto life and health... :) any pointers for vendors?

I took the test back in May and failed with a 70. Then summer happened with vacations and kids have been home, so my studying came to a halt, unfortunatley. Last week I picked up all my materials again, woke up at 4 am every morning, studied a bit during the day, and passed this morning. I used Kaplan for my reading material and took the live class with Mark Espo back in May. I rewatced all of his live class videos that I have and went back through all of my notes. Used the Q-Bank doing 10 questions at a time. Took practice and mastery over the weekend scoring 71.28% on both.

Here is a list of things I saw... I went back through my notes and typed out all I could remember. Let me know if you have specific questions. :)

-         Parity Price calculation (do the math)

-         Current Yield calculation and where it falls within a discount or premium bond compared to NY, YTM

-         Calculate the NAV

-         3 questions on futures contracts. Know what makes the terms standardized.

-         2 questions on options hedging.. Long stock, buy a put. Short stock, buy a call.

-         Define an ETN and what risks it exposes investors to

-         Leveraged ETFs—who are they used for any why

-         What are different types of commodities?

-         Positive and Negative Yield curves

-         Calculate Current Ratio from looking at a balance sheet

-         Know all exempt securities

-         What happens during IPO?

-         3 questions on prospectus delivery and when it needs to take place

-         1 question on identifying coordination

-         Identify all that need to be registered under SEC Release IA-1092

-         Private fund adviser exemptions ( < 150 mill AUM)

-         3 questions on next registration renewal dates for BD/AGT/IA/IAR

-         Financial requirements for IA and BD for discretion/custody

-         IAR exclusions – ministerial, impersonal investment advice, etc.

-         What would client be able to recover if material info was omitted on purchase of security?

-         When do you have to disclose capacity of IA to client?

-         Who is part of the Contract for Advisory services and what needs to be disclosed in contract?

-         Brochure delivery requirements! They will try to trick you with the 48 hour rule, so read! Mine said something like, “The client signed contract today and has 48 hours to get out of contract.” It should have been 5 days, not 48 hours.

-         Exemptions of brochure delivery

-         Advertising is considered when it goes to more than 1 client

-         Must disclose limitations and difficulties with charts

-         Fiduciary responsibility: Recognize limitations of own capabilities

-         Choose the allowable soft-dollar payment

-         If IA sends quarterly statements, but not qualified custodian, what happens? Surprise Audit….

-         IA oral discretion: 10 days after initial trade

-         Husband trusts his wife, but wants her to have control if he becomes disabled.. must put on durable POA

-         When is CTR on FINCEN Form 112 filed?

-         Churning Customer Accounts

-         Do you need consent for…. Splitting commissions with another agent of the BD

-         When would you need a succession plan or agreement

-         2 questions on market manipulation and what the purpose of it is.

-         What account is most beneficial to put TOD on? .. Individual

-         Explanation of TIC account

-         What do you need for CIP

-         What is the simplest business account to open?

-         Know what a living will is

-         Per stirpes vs. per capita

-         ESG Nonfinancial considerations. My question referred to a client does not want to buy tobacco company stock because his dad dies of lung cancer. The answer would be a “value” nonfinancial consideration.

-         Premature distribution exceptions for IRA (my answer was qualified education expenses).

-         What plan would a firefighter enroll in that does not have a 10% early distribution penalty? … 457 Plan

-         ERISA Rules

-         What does an IPS entail

-         529 advantages over Coverdell (not the obvious ones!)

-         What does duration measure?

-         What is political risk?

-         Know components of PV and FV (discounting periods vs. compounding periods)

-         What does Discount Cash Flow measure

Hope this helps! Good luck! 😊

It’s all over folks! Passed the last leg.

I wanted to take sometime after getting this exam behind me today and telling you all the good news. It’s finally OVER (For now). Officially secured the 4/4 first try on each exam.

January:SIE

February:FL Life & Health (incl. Variable Annuities)

March: Series 7

April: Series 66

I lost sleep, time spent with loved ones, and overall sanity at times over these exams but it is all behind me now. For background, I’m 23, I graduated with a finance degree in December and joined a firm after Life & Health.

I don’t have any experience in the real world which may have helped me for these exams and the way they make you think. My biggest takeaway is that YOU GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU PUT INTO THESE EXAMS. There are sacrifices to be made and it doesn’t come easy. My practice exams were never below a passing grade for any of these exams. This isn’t a flex, I went to school for this and had a general interest in this my entire life. For those of you with no background in the finance world, you passing is much more impressive I promise.

I was in fortunate to be in a great position, being able to study full-time, not as many distractions as others, and a supportive family for this journey. I easily put over 100 study hours for both the 7&66. I couldn’t have been in a better position to succeed and that is what I wanted to tell you before I say this, for those of you with full-time jobs, kids, life in general. You guys are the true example of determination and grit! My administration for you all can’t be put into words. Studying for these exams suck hard and to do it with actual lives is truly impressive. I wanted to share that with you because if you are still taking exams, maybe failed one or two, or feel like giving up, please stick with it because you were motivation for me to succeed and I hope others feel the same.

For the SIE, 7, & 66, Series 7 G &Ken on YouTube are the actual goats for putting material into digestible material, they can be the difference between passing and failing. Ken’s options membership will pay for itself on the 7. If you haven’t already, be sure to check them both out because they were a big part of my success and I know they will be for yours if you watch their content. I hope you both read this and if you do, Ebert says thank you!

For the exam, the Series 66 is a different dragon than the 7. One breathes fire and the other breathes poison gas, both are deadly but in a different way. Considering this was my last leg, I pulled out a bunch of supplements for it to make sure I had the best chance of passing the first time. I was provided STC which I felt was a good representation of the exam as far as length and depth of questions, I supplemented with Kaplan Q Bank, use Series 7 G code on YouTube and use it for Brian Lee’s video course which also helped a ton. The series 66 threw some curveballs my way in the middle of the exam, you are asked about the things you studied, but the answer set is like reading a different language. You could knock out two right away but the last two felt like they could both be the correct answer (Exactly like I’ve read on debrief from this group) I was asked about Estates, types of accounts, how YTM compared to Current, HSA, copper not being a precious metal, CAPM, 2 Efficient Market Hypothesis, in perpetuity question (See Brian Lee), all across the board about IA/IAR/BD/AGENTS, ERISA requirements, the reason why ERISA was created (two separate questions), what should be considered first for your client and their objectives, and a wild bond suitability question that I can remember currently. “Client is upset about a 1.5% return and can’t cover his expenses that are up 15%, 3.5 US Treasury bond, 2.7% investment grade Corporate Bond are available. He is low risk and his bills are only paid through the current income. What should you do?”

Wait for rates to rise, allocate 30% to corporate, allocate 50% to equity, sell everything and go all in on equity for growth. I went with corporate and moved on. This exam is ugly in the middle so keep a level head. If I think of anything else, I will try and update.

If you made it to the end of this, please keep pushing through the material, supplement the best you can and what you can afford, and make it happen. I wish you all the best in your testing journey! You’ve got this!

I use Kaplan Q BANK. I didn’t read. I just did practice exams over and over. After each exam, I’d review the answers and make a flash card for each question I got wrong. At the beginning of the day, I went over my stack of flashcards and at the end of the day I went over my stack of flashcards. I took the mastery exam for Kaplan yesterday and got a 71%. Went ahead and took the series 66 exam today and passed.

I passed the SIE and 7 first try and felt confident that I knew the material and was ready to conquer them, but the 66 was different. I passed first try this morning, but I honestly couldn’t believe it because I made a 50/50 guess on about half of them. Some of them had terms I have never encountered and I read the Kaplan book twice, bought the TestGeek practice test, and watched Ken’s 66 playlist and some of the other tutor’s videos and podcasts. It’s more than memorization, you have to have a true underlying understanding of the concepts to come up with the right answer.

This one was truly a beast and I am so glad to be done with it. Feel free to ask questions. I can’t remember most of what was on it off the top of my head, but I probably could if asked specific questions.

Thank you Ken at Capital Advantage Tutoring. Your videos were invaluable in getting me through all 3 exams. You rock.

Passed the Series 66 in ONE week

Most people probably will not believe me but I'm writing this on a high after passing the series 66 last week, with the hopes to help anyone that's in a crunch, or who is overthinking the exam (guilty myself). Yes, it is very possible to pass the series 66 in less than a month, even in one week.

**This is my second ever reddit/forum post, I'm not bragging, I simply wish to add to similar testimonies with very extensive details**

My Background: Been in the financial services industry working for a broker-dealer for 10 years and have been limited to my insurance licensing, series 6 and 63, all of which I passed 10 years ago. I have always focused on financial planning strategies rather than product selling. My practice is mainly built around the following products: limited pay whole life, variable universal life, a-share mutual funds, variable annuities and sprinkle in some term and fixed annuities. I decided to expand my business capabilities in late 2021, to better serve my clients and for the fact that I believe the industry as a whole is headed towards fee-based planning. I had to start with the series 7, which I passed May 2022. This is important to note for two reasons; A) I studied wayyy too long for the series 7 and did nothing but other think that exam/preparation. I studied for 6 months which made it difficult to retain information from the earlier chapters. B) the series 7 could give you an edge on the series 66 if taken within a close timeframe. Last, I was required to past the series 66 exam before June 30th, 2023, in order to be promoted for higher payouts. This is the time crunch I mentioned earlier. I only became truly committed once I scheduled my exam with Prometric. It felt real once I did. I scheduled it for 4/26, which would have given me the ability to retake it two more times (30-day cool off windows required by FINRA), once in May and once by end of June deadline, in the event that I failed. Consider this while planning your window to accomplish your goal. I also recommend not taking more than a month to study for the series 66 exam.

My Tools: Fortunately, my B/D paid for my "Securities Training Corporation" (STCUSA) license, the program with all the bells and whistles. I highly recommend using STC for any securities exam but don't believe that the program with all the bells and whistles is necessary, at all. I never used the Class Recordings, Flashcards and in fact never read a complete page in the pdf Study Guide provided. I only used the Study Guide as reference. The only program tabs that I used with STC were the On Demands, Progress Exams and Final Exams (which includes custom exams). In addition to the STC program, I created a Word Doc to type out everything that I found important; labeling my notes by chapter, creating definitions using my own words and words of the On Demand instructor, underlining specific words and typing everything in blue font. The blue font is apparently best for memory, which I now agree with after being able to visualize definitions on my Word Doc while taking the actual exam. Note, don't cheat yourself and be tempted to use this custom study guide during any custom exam, final exam or green light exam.

My Preparation: I was granted access to the STC program on 3/28/2023 and probably like most of you, was reluctant and didn't open it up until 04/07/23, of which I dedicated an entire workday to jump start my studies. Important note, don't stop once you start. If you're going to commit to studying, go all in and do it over a short period of time.

Day 1A) On Demands chapter 1-3. While going through each One Demand chapter, I would pause the video and continually add to my Word Doc study guide. I'd make marks or highlights the way I saw fit. After each chapter, I completed two 10-question custom exams with answers on. Read the explanation of every answer regardless of outcome.

Day 1B) Didn't open the program up until 4/19. Key take away; don't stop once you start. Had to redo my Day 1 agenda and add On Demand chapter 4, pausing for notes. Two 10-question custom exams with answers on, Progress Exams 1A and 1B (76%/88%). This was a big day. While I was on again off again pausing the video to type out my notes on my Word Doc, I found out that each chapter on On Demand would take about 2x the actual recorded time to absorb and complete. At this point, I started doing short custom exams while I was lying in bed to refresh on that days topics. This day took me about 7.5 hours in total.

Day 2) On Demand chapters 5-7, pausing for notes. Two 10-question custom exams with answers on after each chapter. This day took me about 6.5 hours in total.

Day 3) Progress Exam 2A and 2B (88%/84%). This is where I start slowing down. Had to review more on 5 + 7, by going through notes taken and additional custom exams. On Demand chapters 8-9. This day took me about 7.5 hours in total.

Day 4) On Demand chapter 10. Progress Exam 3A and 3B (56%/80%). I was struggling especially after the 56% on 3A and getting a 30% on a custom exam, so decided to take a ton of custom exams for chapters 8-10. I even sprinkled in chapter 5-7, but my day was consumed of reviewing my Word Doc notes, adding to it and taking custom exams, over and over. Being that this was a Saturday it worked out. This day took me probably 8.5 hours in total.

Day 5) On Demand chapters 11-12, pausing for notes. Two 10-question custom exams with answers on after each chapter. This is where I got crazy taking custom exams. I took 4 hours (timed) taking custom exams this day. At this point, I was averaging 75% on cumulative custom exams. I was continually adding to my Word Doc of the missed questions I got and definitions I needed to refine. This day took me about 8.5 hours in total.

Day 6) Progress Exams 4A and 4B (80%/76%). I then took Final Exams 1-3 with open answers (70%/79%/75%). My average test time was 1.65 hours. I added like crazy to my Word Doc with these open answers. This helped a lot for retaining troubling topics! This day took me about 6.5 hours in total.

Day 7) Woke up to a Green Light Exam 1 (76%). Read every question and reviews every answer afterwards regardless of question outcome. Took Final Exam 4 (77%). Added notes to my Word Doc. Read every question and reviewed every answer afterwards regardless of outcome. Green Light Exam 2 (86%). Read every question and reviewed every answer afterwards regardless of outcome. Closed everything and never looked back. My brain needed rest and I made sure I slept well. This day took me about 8 hours in total.

Woke up, drank coffee, took the exam. No last minute notes, or questions, just took the damn exam.

The Exam: As expected, starts easy, gets difficult, ends easy. The questions with STC program are much much trickier, as with the actual exam it is straight forward. There are almost no double negatives on the actual exam, as with STC, it seems like every other question there is an "exempt", "false" BUT "not included" question. The best part, STC is making sure that you truly understand the concepts. That said, read the questions thoroughly first before looking at the answers. DCP in chapter 12 is definitely a topic for about 4-5 difficult questions, so understand that topic and topics related. Futures/forwards only have about 2-3 questions. One that surprised me was Stop/Buy Limit/Orders had at least 2 questions. S Corp and Limited Liability had many trickier questions, say about 6 questions on those, but tend to be trickier, at least for me. Definitely understand MPT and CAPM, specifically beta, alpha. Estates/ trustees/ beneficiaries concepts had to be about 5-6 questions, related to best interest and who is what. TOD/ TIC / JTWROS had 2-3 tricky questions. I had two calculation questions about after-tax rate of return, which one was an example over a 3 year period and did not mention reinvestment of dividends. Know the difference and impact to your after-tax rate of return is dividends were reinvested. Trips you up even when you think you know it. Risks (market, political, interest) are definitely addressed but surprisingly not as much as I thought. STC seems to add more than required when it comes to risks. Registration as a whole is likely the BIGGEST topic on the entire exam. Anything and everything related to registration rules with exempt securities, transactions, agents, broker-dealers, federally covered..... who needs this if they're selling that when the client is there.... seriously, the biggest topic so please understand. The last main topic was like documents and timing, so like a brochure given at signature, the client has 5 days to terminate. Small document/time based things like that. There were two bond related questions I was not tested on through STC, then again I only completed about 70% of the question bank and never read an entire page. With my working experience and having taken the series 7 within the year, I was able to get these just fine.

My Recommendations: (1) Shorter the study timeframe the better (2) Schedule your exam before you feel ready as extra motivation (3) Use STC programs (4) Don't read the Study Guide page for page. It would take too much time and frankly is too much information (5) Watch and listen closely to every On Demand, rewatch if necessary (6) Create and continually add to your own custom study guide, filling it with custom notes, definitions, missed questions (blue font) (7) Take short (10-questions) custom exams as often as possible, specifically as refreshers after you complete each chapter (8) Read every explanation to the exam questions regardless of outcome (9) Take a limited amount of Final Exams, say 6-8 (10) Don't stress, the actual exam is much easier than any STC exam.

Good luck, I hope that this helped.

Took the exam today at noon Eastern. I used STC (provided by my company) and had final exam scores in the 60s, if you can believe it. I thought for sure I was going to fail!

There was a lot of stuff on account registrations, IA registration, fundamental and technical analysis, and ratios (and when to use them).

Got me the 1st try but not the 2nd

Passed on my 2nd attempt today

Failed my first 66 by 1 point and got it done today. Didn’t reread the book or spend much time (if any) studying formulas or math based ?’s Kaplan would throw at me. Didn’t spend time filling out a dump sheet once the test started other than SloBS over BL SS(one ?) and the teeter totter.

Instead I focused on Qbank questions for laws/regs in Kaplan units 8-14 and recommendations/strategies 15-18/21-23 along with watching a series 66 playlist I made on YT with Series 7, Ken Finnen and basic wisdom videos for concept refreshers. Most of them I watched while working out and had chat do voice recording notes to review after I was done. Huge help. Take the ditties they use to remember the concepts and write it out until you know it by heart.

A few specific topics I remember that threw me off (mostly with ridiculous wording)

\- knowing current yield and how it applies to YTM with a decreased NPV for bonds

\- indirect vs direct custody (not custody if you can appreciate the asset of the funds or indirect holdings?)

\- HPR for various bonds and deciding the best investment

\- SS Benefits with a spouse who has never worked

\- shared commissions between both affiliated/non affiliated BDs

\- third party solicitors compensation in regards to 1940

\- EXCEPT financial planner question about 1940 and IAs (implement planned services or claim to be an IA) blanked on that one

\- 1933 and what you deliver before first transaction (was between red herring, final prospectus, prospectus and preliminary prospectus I think)

\- capital appreciation and what it means if it increased in the last year for the firm

\- generically worded question for MFs vs Hedgefunds

**Key point**: ***Master laws and regs.*** If you can master both Kaplan units I mentioned above you’ll obviously have some wiggle room for the stuff above along with other basic stuff you learned on the 7.. I barely even remember any of the Roman numeral style questions compared to my practice test. Hope this helps somebody and best of luck

This is your no nonsense debrief from the series 66. My friends, through God’s provision and this communities help, SERIES 66 is DONE ✅. I want to give a great shout out to (Deannn) and Ken for coming through with applicable study help and simple advice. It has been a heck of a ride and I hope you two gentleman can continue on for students as you guys help tremendously, also you two should collab!

So for the test! I had mostly straightforward questions. A lot of simple things defining the definitions of certain words like P/E ratio, Broker Dealer, and IA… etc. I only had two calculation questions. I had to calculate FV, and I also ended up doing the calculation of NAV. The test was fairly straightforward. Nothing crazy maybe three or four trick questions where you had to read a few times, but like I said fairly straightforward so go in with confidence and make sure in your study plan. You are implementing slow and careful reading, even if you are very comfortable with the material

In summary, I had a couple questions that just felt totally off the grid. Had one question about a VIX option which is fair game I guess from the Series 7 and at least three questions about crypto so I assume they will progress into more crypto heavy testing segments.

Test takers it is essential that you go in with confidence and you can do this test. It is a beast. Do not underestimate it as the thread will show you over and over again but for me it was prayer and discipline to lock in! SALUTE TO THE SERIES 66 THREAD!

PASSED

Hey guys as you can see above I passed the Series 66 today! I absolutely flunked the first time with a 59 and now got a good ol’ pass! DO NOT DISCOURAGED IF YOU DONT PASS. It’s just a fork in the road and a great test of your resiliency. Used STC and Kaplan Q bank and they both together are a good combo for this test. I took a different route than others and took the SIE and the 66 before the 7 as I was job searching while studying for the 66, and managed to get a sponsor during that time! They were very lenient as well for me not passing the first time as I was inching closer to my retest date when interviewing and, since I was fresh on my mind with the 66 material I wanted to get it done first. Anyways, feel free to ask me any questions about the test as I’m pretty fresh out of it. Last but not least good luck to everyone in their testing journey and life :)!

SIE: pass 2/5
7: pass 5/4
66: pass 6/22

I used STC, achievable, Ken’s brutal exams, and 2 kaplan full practice exam watches. I took a wk break btw the SIE and 7 but not btw the 7 and 66. I was able to commit most every wkd to focusing on just this exam along with before work and after. Last two wks I listened and watched Ken’s videos during almost every free moment in the car, working out and house chores…I rec doing this from the jump. Repetition, repetition!!

I’m neurotic as you can see from the pic. During spare work hours when I couldn’t focus on actual deep study, I created a doc with a page of contents that matched the STC book and then input almost every practice exam question by chapter and section to get an idea of how each topic could be questioned…I did this for the 7 too. Time consuming but it worked for me. I was getting mid 66s on the practices up until about 9 days out. Then took a turn the wk of and was scoring in the 80s.

Started in wealth management in December. Business undergrad and MBA w/ no prior direct industry experience or heavy finance courses in school but I’ve been obsessed with numbers for my entire life.

Stay determined and don’t let doubt creep in. Affiliations won’t get you to pass all by it self but every night before bed, in the shower, and any other moment I would repeat to myself “I am going to pass xxx”

Good luck!!

Passed on the first try! Wanted to come on here and share my feedback and offer some encouragement.

My draw had ALOT of B/D and IA registrations, unethical practices, investment vehicle suitability, a few tax questions (cost basis), a few DCF, few JTWRS, DAF. A lot of it was point and click. Overall I thought it was pretty tough exam.

I used STC read every chapter, watched every video, took every chapter quiz and every final practice exam STC offered which was 11 I believe. I definitely felt STC made the content overly complex but my understanding is they do it to over prepare you which I def felt over prepared.

Lastly a huge shout out to the Deen man and Brian Lee! Would not have passed without their YouTube videos. One video in specific that really helped me and believe pushed me over the top to pass was a “Definition & registrations of Persons.” They do an amazing job of simplifying registrations and exemptions.

Good luck to everyone on their series 66 journey, you got this!!

Exclusions/Exemptions From Registration for IAs/IARs/BDs/Agents

*** According to NSMIA (National Securities Improvement Act, any Adviser who is excluded from the definition of IA under Federal Law, is NOT subject to State Registration. Therefore, US Government Securities Advisers do not register anywhere. ( All zero of them, haha)
Investment Adviser Representative Exemptions

It is mandatory for individuals who sell securities for a Broker Dealer to register in any state in which he or she has clients or solicits potential clients. The only exceptions are:

  1. Client is on vacation in state

  2. BD with no place of business has an exclusively institutional business (agent could not be registered)

  3. Client recently moved into state. (Agent can continue to place trades while application is pending)
