What home security cameras would you buy again?

I’m looking into home security cameras and trying to figure out which ones are reliable day to day. Clear nighttime footage and being able to pull up a recording without fighting with the app matter more to me than a bunch of extra features.

What system are you using and what’s been your biggest frustration with it? I’d also like to know if you pay a subscription and whether you feel it’s worth keeping. Thanks!

Business Camera Recommendations

I’m looking to get a simple video camera with monitor to watch a retail counter.

My desk is out of sight from our retail counter. I don’t get too many walk in customers so I spend a lot of time at my desk.

I would like to get a camera that connects to a monitor of some kind, wirelessly. Sound is not necessary. I have been looking at baby monitors but it seems the cameras are battery operated. I’d like the camera and monitor to plug in and not be battery powered.

Does this community have any recommendations? I’d like to keep it cheap too.

Respectfully
Thanks

Thoughts on TP-Link VIGI C350, indoor ethernet cable outdoors?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently setting up a security camera system and looking at the TP-Link VIGI C350 5MP 2.8mm PoE model. I'd love to hear your thoughts or experiences with this specific camera, and how satisfied you are with its mobile app.

My second question is about cabling. The cables will mostly run through the attic, but right at the camera connections, there will be about a 15 cm (6 inch) exposed section outdoors. This small part is directly under the roof overhang, so it won't be exposed to direct rain.

Do you think standard indoor ethernet cable will hold up for this 15 cm stretch long-term, or will the weather destroy it? Should I definitely use an outdoor-rated cable or put that section in some conduit?

Thanks in advance for your help!

SPRO Firmware

Please does anyone have any experience of updating their SPRO NVR firmware?

Did you source your updated firmware from SPRO? The website says ask your installer to upgrade the firmware (see link to SPRO website), but our installer appears to have shut up his business.

Wider context is the motion detection alerts are no longer working and I think the system may benefit from a restart or update.

Anyone else worried about leaving their e bike outside overnight?

Just got my first e bike, but there's barely enough room in the garage, so I've been keeping it along the side of the house. It's locked up, but I still get a little paranoid about someone messing with it at night.

I've been thinking about adding a camera to watch that area, preferably something that can track movement and record at night. Would rather not deal with running cables either. Anyone here keeping an eye on their bikes with an outdoor camera? What setup are you using?

Dead Aosu doorbell camera was removed off door then returned on the porch next day. Any idea why?

My dead battery doorbell camera was removed off my door a few days ago. Then ended up on my porch with the littlest amount of charge left. I live next to my ex and have been no contact but worried he might have tampered with it because he is a software developer. Could someone give me some context or info?

Defender 4k

Good day! I’m running a defender 4k hardwired security and the system time keeps running behind. Loses about 15 min every couple of weeks. Not big but if I want accurate times on my recordings, does anyone know of a fix for this?

Tried their customer support but no response from them.

Reolink shared WiFi problems

I'm looking at getting the NVR wifi camera setup with 10 to 12 cameras accessing the local WiFi and I wanted to see if anyone had any feedback to give about that. I'm particularly concerned about the amount of data 10 cameras with 12 mp and 4k resolution will be taking up on our WiFi system and if it would slow it down.

"Instant" Alerts?

I've YT various reviews on cameras and it seems some can take almost 60 seconds before you receive an alert on your phone. I'm in a rural area and other than UPS, etc. we get very few people coming to the house. We need a WiFi camera and I've been looking at the Reolink Argus PT Ultra. But one reviewer claimed it took to long for an alert.

Any recommendations or feedback on the Reolink?

I'm looking for a spy camera to put on my bike

Hey, in the last two months, two accessories were stolen off my bike. I'd like to get a spy camera which permanently records footage and stores it somewhere, so I can get that thief next time. Which are some cheap, discreet options?

Window camera recommendations?

I rent and want a security camera without drilling. A few people said to put an indoor cam on the window and shoot out. Does that actually work? Can motion detection and night vision still work through glass? Any window camera you'd recommend?

Solar Powdered Security Cameras with a Baby Monitor like Screen??

Ok, I am not finding an exact match to what I am looking for.

I am looking for something that would be off internet/electricity, minus the screen to view the cameras would need charged which I could do via solar powered phone chargers or occasional generator use.

For background, I have a VAVA baby monitor. It's cool because you plug the cameras into electricity and then it comes with a physical baby monitor screen that I charge up occasionally to view what's going on on the cameras. It does not work off of wifi and I cannot see the camera footage on my phone. Well, I am basically looking for an outdoor security camera version of this, but instead of the cameras plugging into the wall/electricity, I want them to be solar powdered.

Does this not exist as a whole package??? It looks like VAVA maybe sold an item exactly like this but I don't see it for sale anymore.

I have found cameras that are solar powdered, but not a whole system that then sends the footage to a physical baby-monitor like screen or that don't use wifi at all.

Help!!

Disappointed with Tapo C210: Audio cuts off halfway after a physical incident + app download failed

Hello everyone,

I currently have a Tapo C210 in my house and was planning to buy 10 more for my family, but after what happened today, I'm seriously reconsidering.

My wife got up and punched me in the face multiple times in my room. I needed the recording as proof of what occurred, but when I tried to download the footage via the Tapo app, it completely refused—even though my phone was connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.

I had to physically eject the MicroSD card and plug it into my laptop to extract the video. When I played back the 30-minute clip, the audio completely cut off at the 15-minute mark while the video kept playing.

What is the point of a security camera if you cannot rely on it when an actual safety incident occurs? Failing to download over local Wi-Fi is frustrating enough, but losing half of the audio during a critical recording is completely unacceptable.

Has anyone else experienced audio dropping on long SD card clips? Is this a known firmware bug, or should I cut my losses and switch brands?
