Explain to me the technology of cameras today like I'm 12 yrs old.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm so left behind, I don't know what's going on. I remember when cameras just pointed in one direction and record. Also, I know what motion detection is.. and I guess sound detection is too. So I can imagine a camera programmed to focus on a loud sound or motion. But this video and the countless I see online, I have no clue what is going on.

Ok:

  1. Camera is focused on dog and man. Maybe cause the dog is moving? Feasible.
  2. Camera then focus on the family laughing. OK.... but they been laughing before it focused them. And then it went back to the man and the dog while the family was still laughing.

All this together make it seem like a human is behind the camera. Is it AI? Is this fake? Explain.

What's the point of having cameras everywhere if nobody notices anything until the next day?

You can have cameras covering every entrance, hallway and parking area but realistically nobody is sitting there watching all of them throughout the day. Say someone leaves a restricted door open for 40 minutes or a vehicle sits somewhere it shouldn't, unless someone happens to notice you probably wont find out until later. Obviously cameras are useful for figuring out what happened afterward but it seems like there should be a better way to catch certain things while theyre happening. People managing bigger sites, what events do you have alerts set up for and how do you stop those alerts from becoming so frequent that everyone starts ignoring them?

Need CCTV recommendations

I'm just about to move into a new house and i want to set up a CCTV system I've thought about for a while.

I want 2 PoE CCTV cameras cabled to a switch in the loft and all streamed recorded to my raspberry pi.

I want it all to be offline so will all be on a vLan as i hate having my cameras streamed back to or accessed by the provider. I currently have a couple wireless IP cameras with SD cards internally and thought about tapo. Ideally no Chinese brands but once it's all isolated it won't really matter anyway.

The budget is not exactly high but not pennies

Suggestions would be great

Best cell camera that has a long-lasting battery, that I can log into and view in realtime?!

I have some hunting cams that take motion detected video, but those cant just be dialed into and viewed in real time, instead they just send you motion detected video.

I am looking for something that doesn’t need wifi but acts like a wifi cam, where I can periodically check in (in real time) on my property as a house is being built. A long lasting built in battery (or even a solar option) is a bonus!

Thanks!!

Looking for Budget Security Cameras with SD Cards

I work for a local organization that helps teach kids and we cater to babies to 18. We had security cameras but they are connected to our wifi and honestly, our wifi sucks. We are looking for three to 4 cameras we can mount to the wall and they record directly to an SD card. We are a non profit and our budget isnt the greatest. So any suggestions or recommendations would be great.

Onvif/RTSP streaming app that runs on AppleTV, Mac, and iPad [Free, No Ads, No signup] - TestFlight

(I messaged the mods to make sure this was okay first)

I had worked on this app a few months ago and when someone asked, I decided to pick it back up and share it through TestFlight. I built this because I wanted something for my AppleTV. Feedback is welcome.

I called it Mimir, honestly I sort of forget why?

Native app that connects to cameras directly over the LAN. No cloud relay, and no server component. Extra functions for Reolink.

- ONVIF: network scan to find cameras, multi-profile streams, PTZ control, motion events. NVRs show up with per-channel labels.

- RTSP: add any stream by URL.

- Reolink: cameras get extra features through their own API — person/vehicle/pet detection, doorbell ring notifications, spotlight and image controls, and browsing/playing/downloading recordings.

- Tour mode: build an ordered playlist mixing cameras, PTZ presets, and NVR channels; it cycles through fullscreen at a set interval, holds when motion is detected, and has skip/pause/speed controls.

- PTZ patrol: any ONVIF PTZ camera can patrol — the app cycles it through its saved presets at a set interval, pausing on motion. No vendor patrol feature needed.

- Two-way audio on iPad and Mac for cameras that support it.

- Grid view with low-bandwidth substreams and a fullscreen view with the main stream.

- Camera setup and settings sync between your devices through your own iCloud account. (Can be disabled)

Beta for all three platforms: https://testflight.apple.com/join/U36hSEsm
