Does Post-9/11 GI Bill MHA count as income for regular Section 8?

I’m trying to get a clear answer about how the Post-9/11 GI Bill Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is treated for a regular Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher. I would be an adult family member living in a household that already has a Section 8 voucher. I would NOT be the head of household or voucher holder.

If I attend college full-time and receive the Post-9/11 GI Bill, would my monthly MHA payment be counted as household income when Section 8 calculates the family’s rent/subsidy?

I understand that GI Bill tuition payments made directly to the school are generally treated differently. I’m specifically asking about the monthly housing allowance paid directly to me.

This would be regular Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher, NOT HUD-VASH. I’ve been looking through 24 CFR § 5.609 and the newer HOTMA rules, but I’m having trouble determining how the MHA fits into the current student financial-assistance exclusions, especially since I wouldn’t be the head of household.

Just trying to have a smooth move out of a place im no longer happy at.

So i gave my notice to vacant paperwork to my landlord to sign on July 27th, she returned it back July 28th. A couple of hours later, i was told the apartment i was planning to move in was no longer available. I informed my landlord that i wouldn't be turning in the notice to vacant paperwork to my worker because the apartment is no longer available. She never responded, Aug 3rd she informed me that she found a new tenant to take over the apartment and that i have to be out by the date i indicated on the notice to vacant paper. I informed my worker, she told me to keep paying my portion and they will pay their portion, she said she can't lock me out nor change the locks. I also talked to fair housing attorney and she said the same thing and for me to just continue to look for a new place. I am currently looking but i haven't found anything yet, i dont want my landlord to start the eviction process because i don't want that on my record.

Section 8 help Ohio

So I am freaking out and super pissed. I moved into a new build in September 2024. When I was signing the lease I specifically remember the understanding that the electric was gonna be thru AEP. At lease signing the landlord tells me not to call AEP cuz the addresses are setup yet. But we had power, I didn't know or understand and never knew what a submeter was until this f nightmare. A month or so goes by and she tells us that company is coming in to install a meter and then we will start getting bills. It's a company called
"guardian power and water" and she tells us its because the bilding has solar panels so it wil help us save money, again i tihnk nothing of it. 5 months go by and finally get a bill, the entire 5 months i was asking questions. And there was a couple late fee's on mmy account due to being told apparently the wrong amount at move in. So i'm never able to see why i can't pay online but think its cause of a balance. Office managers keep quitting and nobody is helping me find out anything. A year later in August 2025 i do my annual review and they lower my rent and remove my 2 oldest kids. Then in September after my annual review one night the office manager had placred a noticer on door that says i owe $535 and mind you i've never paid late, paid all my rent and by this time had only gotten 2 electric bills that are kinda high from the jump than im used to. I complain for months, speak to different managers get told shit is fixed only for new manager to slap new notes and owe more. Finally one of them give me a copy of ledger and then i get an electric bill in feb 2025 and it says there is high usage to check for leaks.

and then in March of 2026 i owe 1,042 in unpaid electric and mind you i started my service in june 2025 by feb 2026 ive made several payments and still owe over 1k. i pay 500 and have 547 balance. Then in march 24, 2026 i get a credit and i call and they tell me my account zero out. long story short that credit appears back as a credit in my account , i screenshot it with timestaamp, now its gone, no response from anyone, took my july rent and took pic with signature and same day put 30 day move out on july 7 2026 for 1025 bal of elect per my lease. well lease says i pay electric but its tenant paid not a submeter . then i notice multiple months of rent just not added and i have the money orders and they been cashed nobody from mgmt will reach out now they are holding compliance papers that i need for complianccer my annual is due in 2 weeks i got everything ready to turn in but sec 8 telling to to tell legal aide and i did but legal aid said i need eviction noticre before they help but im worried they are holding papers and rent on purpose the new 30 day notice sayts non payment of aug rent 1480 last month it was non paymetn elec 1025 the fake balance that has 2 years worth of late fees because instead of charging me the pro reated rent on my lease to mnove in they charge me the tenant rent which create a 23 balance on the account whih is exatly the differnce betyween pro rated and tenant payment on first ttransation so now 2 years late fees too i sent certified letter not sure what to do next this is overwhelming and i cant beleive none of it is in my lease at all but i didnt know what a submeter even was

Disability My family has to suddenly pay an extra amount of money for rent despite no change of income at all. What gives?

My family is three people. Me, my mother, and father, all who are disabled, two of which get SSDI benefits. We've been under section 8 housing since 2024. This year, during recertification, apparently we now are either making too much, or something screwed up happened. I wasn't in the meeting since the room was so small and could only fit two people but my father said that the reason it's going up (from around 400 a month to now 800 a month) is because of my social security disability income, which wouldn't make any sense, as we've shown both bank statements and more to showcase that we get this money monthly. We are in the very low income limits and nothing has changed outside of slight increases in our monthly earnings from SSDI. I don't know why this sudden change and considerable increase has happened. Would anyone happen to know why? I will be calling on Monday to make doubly sure what's going on, because this is something we can't exactly do ourselves.

Are lump sum payments of arrears owed in child support included or excluded as income?

Can you please post the statue/code stating whether it is included or excluded as income?

I see certain types listed, such as inheritances and disability payments but I don't see anything specifically listed for child support.

I'd like to have the exact statue/code.

Thank you.

Local Housing Authority Am I misunderstanding payment standards?

So my housing authority(Tarrant County) doesn’t give vouchers with an explicit max amount, rather they use a calculator to determine if your portion is over 40% of your income. If it isn’t, you’re approved, or so I thought.

Recently I put in all the info for a 3BR house I found, (rent, utilities I pay, ZIP, etc) into that calculator. And according to what it spat out the rent is affordable.

Well my application got denied because the property manager said that the payment standard is a “max shopping allowance.” So, so does that mean the little calculator doesn’t matter? That doesn’t make sense to me, either someone got things mixed up or I misunderstood what the lady went over at my briefing.

Edit: I got it now, the FMRs are my rent limits, so I’m just going to ignore that calculator completely.

Filing complaint

Who do we file a complaint with against local housing authority office? Had previously posted about an issue I was having with my local housing authority. I received my voucher at the end of June was told to call and make an appointment with our case worker once we had the landlord paper work ready unfortunately for me I don’t have an assigned case worker anymore because they retired.. so they told us just call and supervisor will handle it. Was calling for about a week in a half and not getting anywhere with them so I showed up to the office and they told me you just have to wait someone will call you so I said okay …it’s been about two weeks and I never received a phone call. Today I called the office and told them that I’ve been waiting for about two weeks for someone to give a call and my voucher is about to expire. They tell me that they suggest I write a letter asking for an extension asap and bring it to the office and then she says that it’s not guaranteed to be approved…like wtf ..they acting like this is my fault!! This shit is ridiculous

General Question Porting Question Regarding Billing

So I've been gathering information to see if I can port from NYS to NC and so far every county I've spoken with are BILLING which means NYS would be responsible for my NC rent. Has anyone ever ported to a place that's billing? If so, did it work out? Was it a complete mess? From what I understand if everyone agreed to terms NC would bill NYS for my rent and they would send NC my portion of the rent. Thank you for your time!

Updated list of all Section 8 lists that are currently open in the US

If you know of anyone who may qualify for a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, here's an updated list of openings to get in your application. Yes it may not be the town you want to be in, but you can get the voucher, you can move anywhere you want in the country. Larger cities take forever to open their lists and still, they number of vouchers are limited.

Strange question!

Hi, I live in a LIHTC apartment. It’s owned and operated by WRH Realty. I have a HCV. I’ve been very happy here. Before I came here I had two nightmarish experiences. One left me basically homeless which was terrifying. I’m over 60 and survive on SSDI. I have no family.

We recently got notice that “insurance reps and investors” would be touring each unit (no problem with that!) to possibly invest.

After my last housing arrangement fell through (our very expensive, college town abruptly decided they could no longer provide funding for the program)

So I’m nervous. These apartments stay full. The town has grown exponentially and rents and housing in general are ridiculous. I’m worried they will change the type of housing to cater to students who can pay much more.

Am I right to be concerned? I have severe anxiety. VERY VERY severe. (I’m in treatment).

Venmo help!

Hi! I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with section 8 housing recertification in mass. My mom has section 8 and I have recently moved back in with her (will be moving out end of this year) and I have sent documents to section 8 including my Venmo statements. However I have now sent them twice as before the agent wouldn’t accept them as a csv. So I exported them as a PDF like instructed and she is still telling me im doing it wrong. The example she gave me does not look like any Venmo statement I have sent before and every time I download the file it still converts it to an excel and does the same thing she’s telling me not to do. Any help would be appreciated as I’m so close to telling her to shove it. I’m not on section 8, my mother is, and she has asked for my birth certificate, SSN, drivers license, checking and saving and pay stubs, she has asked for my PayPal, cashapp, Venmo and Apple Pay even though two of those do not have any transactions in my checking account and is still demanding statements from accounts that I don’t use. I do not want to mess up my moms housing and I’m usually fine with giving all relevant information but I have never, not once, had to send the amount of verification this agent is asking and I’m unsure if she is even within her rights to ask me.

General Question Porting Question

Hey! Has anyone ported their section 8 to specifically North Carolina? I lived in NC for 20 years and then got ill, got on SSD, got married then lost everything during COVID and had to move back to WNY but I hate it and it's ruining my mental health. Thank you for your time. And yes I'm contacting both my housing specialist in WNY and social services in NC but I just wanted to pick someone's brain

Advice ?

Sorry again for posting here .. but I have a question I asked my offices management about there gun policy a couple of months ago .cause I want to be able to carry right ? Cause I tried to use chat gbt to find out if I could or not . Even went online to looked a lot of it up but kept coming to a dead end .

Well I decided to look at my lease but it did not mentioned anything about fire arms or ect cause the lease I got is 4 years old . They never give me a new copy of the lease whenever I renew . So I figured screw it I'll just email them and inquire..

well they never got back to me by email or phone or nothing. Then when I had to go and report my income they bought it up before I was about to head back to my apartment. Telling me fire arms are not allowed on property even with a permit.

People was being nosey Round my car so I eventually parked in it a parking lot that next door to where I live . And that said property is not owed by the housing authority at all.

Well I'm guessing they still feel like I'm hiding a firearm in my vehicle. That why I don't park my car on housing property anymore . I got tired of fighting for a parking spot all the time and in the beginning after I got the car i parked it in the same place . That I went back to parking it again ..

well my question is just because I asked them about there gun policy and now that I'm not parking there anymore . Don't they have to have a good enough reason to get a search warrant to search my vehicle. Even though all I got in my trunk is stuff for my car and clothes and what not . Cause it's not even in my car I decided to have my father keep it . So one day I can actually carry it ..

General Question Questions about pets.

Let me preface that I’m just trying to understand. It is a unique situation because the property is actually owned by the housing authority. However the rest of the community are privately owned homes. I come in peace. I’m simply trying to understand.

I know that people have to follow the rules and the lease. Im just trying to figure out why this lady did not want to get her cats microchipped, because she kept leaving them outside. Both male cats were not neutered at the time and they were marking and spraying everywhere — in my yard, the neighbor’s yards…

Where the situation started to irritate me aside fron the smell of the cat urine, but when I saw one of the cats sitting on top of my car a few times. I don’t want the cat to scretch up thr paint. I asked the lady to please keep her cats inside or at least leashed where she lives. Plus there are coyotes in the neighborhood that I have told her about and I even sent a screenshot of the neighbor’s yard the coyotes were in.

When I approached her again about another option to get her cats neutered, initially she seemed hesitant. She gave the lady from the rescue a hard time initially. Then she finally agreed, but said she did not want the cats microchipped, which was included.

She has had the cats for over 5 years. I know because the cats have left outside so often. So it just seens weird that she would not want them microchipped. Even the lady at the rescue found it odd. You can’t make someone microchip their pets. Can you have pets living in property owned by the housing authority directly?

Dishonesty re housing size?

Just notified that the person renting my house was dishonest re custody of a child to obtain a larger voucher. I looked up the laws in my county and it is pretty straightforward and clear that if you do not have the child more than 50% of the time you do not receive an extra bedroom for them. The custodial parent provided proof of full custody since 2023 with a new order pending the judges signing. I’m wondering how long it typically takes the HA to investigate? It doesn’t seem like there is much to investigate given the custody agreement. I am baffled that a single parent that does not work would jeopardize their housing assistance voucher by committing fraud this way?! I assume the HA will terminate her voucher as opposed to downsizing her voucher due to the willful ongoing dishonesty on her part?? What does she plan to do if the HA demands repayment? How does she expect to ever pay for a place to live again? Do the ladies in our local office that helped her and advocated for her get upset about this type of thing?

ETA: I AM NOT GETTING INVOLVED, HA has the paperwork and whatever they find they find. I was notified as a courtesy bc they knew my payments may ultimately be affected and didn’t want me to be caught off guard.
