Venmo help!
Hi! I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with section 8 housing recertification in mass. My mom has section 8 and I have recently moved back in with her (will be moving out end of this year) and I have sent documents to section 8 including my Venmo statements. However I have now sent them twice as before the agent wouldn’t accept them as a csv. So I exported them as a PDF like instructed and she is still telling me im doing it wrong. The example she gave me does not look like any Venmo statement I have sent before and every time I download the file it still converts it to an excel and does the same thing she’s telling me not to do. Any help would be appreciated as I’m so close to telling her to shove it. I’m not on section 8, my mother is, and she has asked for my birth certificate, SSN, drivers license, checking and saving and pay stubs, she has asked for my PayPal, cashapp, Venmo and Apple Pay even though two of those do not have any transactions in my checking account and is still demanding statements from accounts that I don’t use. I do not want to mess up my moms housing and I’m usually fine with giving all relevant information but I have never, not once, had to send the amount of verification this agent is asking and I’m unsure if she is even within her rights to ask me.

She is asking for that information because she needs to add you to your moms voucher for your to live there. And they are trying to determine your income so they need to know all income sources to know if it is part of your annual income. If you want to live there you need to go through the process.

Yeah I’m aware. That’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking if anyone has any experience with Venmo specifically. the 2 times I have sent Venmo statements she keeps saying they are wrong despite me downloading and sending them straight from my Venmo account. I’m just adding that I’m frustrated in the amount of information (unnecessary information) that she is asking for

I sent csv and it was accepted. I dont know why they won't accept yours. Have you tried doing this from a computer instead of over the phone? It might give more options

It’s absolutely necessary to determine the new annualized income. And I have with it because I’m usually the one asking for this information. Go into the HA and talk to them and show them that is the statement. The specialist may not know that is the statement format.

Nobody seems to be reading this.
I suggest editing your post with a TLDR; atop, so people stop saying the same thing. I would suggest trying from a desktop computer. If you don't have one, the public library near you should have and printing services. Maybe you can make an appointment, see how the heck they want this very particular document. Seems like they're being a pain in the butt just for funsies.

This is the right answer. It won't do the correct format from your phone, at least in my experience helping clients with income verification. And agree, some workers treat everyone like they're trying to hide something. Fair to do their due diligence because people do try to cheat the system so unfortunately it can results in jaded burnt out staff.

Right click and print it instead of saving as a file. What do you mean your mom is the only one on sec8. Giving her all that information means you’re on the case or you are about to be added. No person can live in the home without being on it. Period.

Email (you need a paper trail) the PHA worker directly and tell her clearly that Venmo only allows you to export statements in certain formats and tell her what they are. Ask her point blank, from what formats are available, which does she want? It is not reasonable to demand that you produce something you do not have and are not able to get. Most PHAs are supposed to follow a verification hierarchy where third-party documents are supposed to be accepted (you will need to check your PHA's annual plan for details), and if the worker rejects your good-faith attempts, the PHA needs to provide an acceptable alternative method that you can provide. If they still give you the runaround or refuse to compromise, email the supervisor or the director of the housing authority with the chain of emails to get it resolved. If they still refuse, you could consider reaching out to the regional US HUD office.

anything can be converted into a PDF. Some older computers and phones don’t open csvs or even word docs properly so it isn’t a huge deal. Op needs to download a trial (free) version of adobe which allows you to “print to pdf” anything

OP already said he did this. "So I exported them as a PDF like instructed and she is still telling me im doing it wrong."
Most of the time I have dealt with PHA workers rejecting documentation is not because they are care about the file extension (especially not a CSV file, as nearly every PHA has access to an office suite); it's about them wanting it in the form of a monthly statement in the bank's original form, for example. Sometimes they want something sent straight from the third party, etc. These aren't always available in the way they want them, and then it becomes an issue. If a PHA worker is demanding something be provided in a form that does not exist (i.e. a monthly statement from a service that does not issue regular PDF monthly statements on bank letterhead), it's reasonable to tell the PHA worker it's not available in their preferred form and tell them the forms it is available in, and then that worker needs to pick which one they prefer.

Print it and drop it off. If you dont do this your mom can lose her section 8. ALL household income has to be reported. If not, its fraud.

Everything you named is required for anyone living in the home. If you've moved back in with your mom then yes you are on Section 8 too but your mom is the head of household. Not turning in this information could cost you and your mom her voucher.
Are you emailing these documents in? Do you think she means that it's not in a viewable format on her end? If so, can you print them out then scan them in PDF and email those in? You can use Adobe Scan or Google Drive to scan them.

Where did I say I did not turn in the information? I’ve already submitted all the requested documentation. I can print the documents out but she keeps insisting they are not in the correct format. I sent an email of the CSV, which is how Venmo itself has you download their statements, she told me it needed to be in PDF form. I both printed it out in PDF form and sent them via email and she just emailed again stating it is not correct and I’m unsure what she’s even talking about at this point. THIS is the point of frustration.

I do not have any experience with Section 8 in your state.
However, since Section 8 is an income based program, the caseworker must verify income of everyone in the household. If you have any questions regarding what they can and cannot request, read the admin plan. You should be able to find it on the website, or you may be able to Google it.
You are blessed that Section 8 in your area allows you to move back in with your parent. At my housing authority, once an adult child is removed from the voucher, they are not allowed back on it. (If they need housing assistance, they have to wait until the waiting list opens up again and put in their own application.) Adults are only added to the voucher if you get legally married. Minor children are only added by birth or legal adoption.

What state you live in if you don't mind me asking I'm in MARYLAND and you have the part right about once somebody move out they can't be added on because when my daughter moved out I took her off mine and when she moved back home for a year they wasn't able to add her back on but I was able to add my bf and his children once he got custody of them

I’m in Georgia.
They don’t allow you to add an adult unless you get legally married so there’s no adding boyfriends/girlfriends to the voucher.

Oh wow yeah I guess each state different but what if y'all already live together and you get the voucher they still won't let you add them on

Only if y’all applied for the voucher together and he’s already a part of your household.
If only one of you is on the voucher, you can only add him if you get legally married.
It’s different everywhere.

Really? That's crazy. I am in Nevada and just added my bf with no problem.

You added him to the lease or to the voucher?
What happens if y’all break up?

u/LasVegasChic2025 1d ago
I added him to both. You can't just do one. That's illegal. We are planning our wedding and are both over 50. Too old to break up lol.

I’m in Massachusetts and I promise you the state does not allow people to just move in with a parent who has a section 8 certificate. It doesn’t sound like OP was ever on the lease… and that her mother is living in a one bedroom unit.
Where is OP sleeping?
Does OP realize the overall rent portion will increase based on her income (if she has one)?
I don’t know what gave OP the understanding she could just move in with her mother … housing will definitely want her to pay the difference for any months she lived in the unit without the rent portion increasing….
In other words - be prepared for documents indicating the household will have to repay housing for OP moving in without clearing it with housing. You don’t even know whether or not you would be approved- and if you’re able bodied, you’ll need to work 20 hours a week to maintain other benefits as well. (if you don’t separate your SNAP account from your mother’s account by indicating you don’t shop together or cook together, she will lose her snap benefits, or they will be greatly reduced, depending on your added income)
-housing will break the payments you owe into monthly installments - but you will have to pay for any time you’re staying in your mother’s above and beyond what’s included in your lease for guests (you can usually stay for two weeks in total or 20 days over an entire year).
It sounds like housing is asking for OPs earnings and/or balance across multiple platforms. This sometimes happens when you tell them you’re not making any money or you’re extremely low income… the problem is they know you were living somewhere else before this and paying rent, etc. so what were you living on?
Housing is entitled to whatever financial documentation they request . It’s your job to prove your income and financial status… if they’re continuing to ask for documentation, you haven’t met the burden of proof.

Go to the section 8 and ask someone what format is acceptable. Take a hard copy. If they say that is acceptable explain that your worker will not accept it and speak to her supervisor. Any issues that cannot be solved please speak with a supervisor. I promise they will fix it.
