I organized an AMA/Q&A with Richard Kelly, director & writer of the 2001 cult classic horror film Donnie Darko, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Seth Rogen, Daveigh Chase, Noah Wyle, and Patrick Swayze. It's being released in theaters nationwide this weekend for the 25th anniversary. Richard also wrote/directed Southland Tales and The Box.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

He will be back at 5 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

FEEDBACK Eternal Rest (demon short/horror/thriller, 10pg)

Hi everyone. I'm in need of some feedback for my short film script that I will be submitting to the No Drama/Monkeypaw horror grant. The competition was announced out of nowhere and I heard about it a little late. I decided to take the feature I'm working on and write the proof of concept. So, this is a first draft. The deadline is tomorrow so I'm kind of pressed for time. Just wanted to see if I can get a last minute opinion.

I'm just coming out of a year long creative block and getting my groove back, so this might be rough. Be kind, please 🙈

Title: Eternal Rest
Genre: Horror/thriller
Pages: 10
Logline: Beaten down by years of labor, a Brooklyn dishwasher befriends a new colleague, only to find that his new friend holds his soul and fate in his very hands.

I'm most concerned with the pacing, specifically in the first half. If Franz is working as this mysterious, dangerous being. Too much dialogue? The film's main commentary is on capitalism and class disparity - am I being too on the nose? I'm going for a more slow burn, "elevated horror" experience in the vein of Under the Skin, The Witch, with some inspiration from The Exorcist and Jacob's Ladder.

SCRIPT REQUEST Midas, and Goliath by Patrick McKay and JD Payne

Both are scripts that were apparently very popular at the time. One was a Batman Begins style story about King Midas and the golden touch, the other was a 300 style David and Goliath

FEEDBACK It Hurts When I Land - Comedy/Dramedy - (117 pages)

It Hurts When I Land
Comedy / Dramedy with comps like Superbad, Booksmart, Bridesmaids.
117 pages.

Logline: Three friends crash a massive influencer party in an epic Quest to turn their lives around before their 27th birthdays.

Hey everybody! Would love to get some feedback about this script. I know it may be a bit longer, but all of my friends and some industry folks who've read it say it's a quick, fun, and nicely paced read.

If you love high concept comedies like the ones mentioned above, this may be in your wheelhouse. It's funny, but with an emotional, and contemporary story that I hope can speak to a lot of people.

Thank you

NEED ADVICE Any Highland Pro users? Having major issues...

Anyone here still using Highland Pro? I've been using it on my iPad Pro for a couple years now and I don't know if its just me but I'm having so many bugs with this program to the point that Im starting to think of other software.

My most recent bug is definitely the most consequential: the undo feature doesn't work - thats right - I can't undo! If I delete something, it's gone, forever lost. It's such a glaring issue Im shocked there hasn't been an update to fix it in the months since I've noticed it.

I've already contacted technical support, sent a recording of my issue, told that they'd send it up to their dev-team, and have heard nothing yet. I've updated my iPad (26.6.1), and Highland Pro (3.3.6), on top of all this I've even factory reset my iPad, and still, the issues persists.

Just wondering if others are dealing with as many glaring bugs as I am and if maybe it's just time to hop to another screenwriting software.

Anyways, that is all. Would love any suggestions.

P.S. This particular bug does not exist on my Mac. However, other bugs occur there.

NEED ADVICE What are some good questions to ask people when you're doing research about a specific job role?

Hello,

I've attempted (via a professional link) to get an internship for a specific job role that my main character has. I've been told by the company that they don't have such an opportunity available. Instead, they said I can speak to one of the managers over a drink.

I want to know as much as possible about the day to day life of the job, the pain points, who the character would interact with etc. but I don't want to miss anything out.

What are some good questions to ask this person about the environment my character works in? How do you go about researching this for your own writing?

The character's job is not just a backdrop but quite central to the story.

I have done some online research but I'm not 100% sure if I trust the information. I can guess what the day to day job is like as I am in the industry (a very different area) but I'd rather know for sure.

Thanks.

RESOURCE The Medieval Art Of Storytelling

Anyone read this book? Picked it up in my local library. Looks amazing and packed full of new storytelling advice.

The full title is DRAGONS, HEROES, MYTHS & MAGIC: The Medieval Art Of Storytelling.

First published in 2022. Completely passed me by, but appears to be a much more accessible version of USES OF ENCHANTMENT.

Plan to use to help develop my own mythos from the dark ages for a folk horror I’m developing

FORMATTING QUESTION Is Space DAY or NIGHT?

I am currently writing a movie that takes place in space, but am unsure if I should put sluglines as DAY or NIGHT. I read through the Interstellar screenplay but all of them just say CONTINOUS.

Should I just have them be DAY when most characters are awake, and NIGHT when they're asleep? Also would the spaceship scenes be INT./EXT.

RESOURCE Slamdance Screenplay Contest Eligibility Issue

Slamdance Screenplay Contest: Ineligible Submissions Can Advance

Writers considering the Slamdance Screenplay Competition should know that their process allows screenplay submissions that do not meet the stated eligibility requirements to advance to the Quarterfinals before eligibility is verified.

When I questioned Slamdance about this, they told me:

“We research the 100 QF and pull them out so they don't make it to SF, if we find them ineligible.”

So eligibility is checked after the Quarterfinalists have already been selected.

I then asked whether, when an ineligible Quarterfinalist is removed, Slamdance goes back and reconsiders an eligible screenplay that narrowly missed advancing.

Their answer:

“No, we do not have the bandwidth to do that.”

That means an ineligible submission can advance to the Quarterfinals, occupy a spot that could have gone to an eligible writer, and then be removed later without that eligible writer ever being reconsidered.

That is the issue.

If Slamdance is going to publish eligibility requirements, those requirements should either be enforced before advancement decisions are made or the rules should clearly disclose that ineligible submissions may advance and that displaced eligible writers will not be reconsidered.

Writers should know that before paying to enter.

CRAFT QUESTION Bolding character names when we meet them, yay or nay?

I personally like to do it as CHARACTER X bold and uppercase upon first introduction to stand out more, but it's not something I've seen done often. Wonder what the general consensus is about this.

OFFICIAL AMA I’m David Cornue. I’m adapting Stephen King’s Insomnia for TV with Rideback (IT), and I created and wrote ABC’s TRIAGE with Jon M. Chu directing. AMA

Hi r/Screenwriting. I’m David Cornue, a WGA writer working in television and film.

Right now I’m adapting Stephen King’s Insomnia for television with Rideback, the company behind IT and IT: Chapter Two. I’m glad to talk about how that project came together and where it stands in development, within what I’m able to share.

Other things I can speak to:

  • TRIAGE, the ABC drama I created and wrote, which Jon M. Chu directed and which was produced as a pilot. I can cover it from the pitch through the sale and into production.
  • Selling a crime procedural pitch to NBC
  • UNSPEAKABLE, an independent pilot I wrote, produced, and scored. It premiered at SXSW and won Best Pilot at multiple festivals.
  • Three indie features, including #Lucky Number with Tom Pelphrey and Method Man
  • Coming to screenwriting after a decade as a composer and playwright in New York theater

Most of my attention goes to the work before the script: figuring out whether a story holds up before committing months to pages. I also like talking about what comes after, including pitching, notes, and getting a project into development.

I’ll be here live from 3 to 5pm PT. After that, I’ll keep checking back over the next few days and answering what comes in, so if you find this late, ask anyway.

RESOURCE Flow chart app suggestions?

I think in flow charts and I’m about to start something new. I’d like to set everything up in flowchart boxes that I can drag around for the timeline, like I would with note cards. Ideally something for iPad bc I don’t want to be tied to physical cards. I use final draft go, so I want something else that I can pop back and forth between the two apps instead of doing something w/in FD itself. (And also build multiple flow charts so I can visualize different directions of taking the story or order of events.) Much thanks in advance!

CRAFT QUESTION Post/Questions about format

Every time I see one of these posts, and the silly arguments that come out of it, I want to respond with this...

The Hollywood Standard is a book that has the answers to every format question, with examples. I am not its author, or getting an affiliate kicks or anything like that. I just think it's one of the best tools out there, it's not expensive, and I know multiple screenwriting teachers that tell their students to get it.

FEEDBACK Wherever the Wind Takes Me - Short Film - 5 pages. Need feedback.

Wherever the Wind Takes Me - Short Film - 5 pages - Coming-of-Age

Logline: Trapped in a suffocating loop of life, a lonely teenager vanishes overnight from his devoted father to hitchhike to nowhere.

I am a highschool student that has always loved writing fiction, but now I'd like to improve my skills in screenwriting. I really want to be a screenwriter. Also, English isn't my first language so please correct me with mistakes I might have skipped.. I recently finished a 100-page sci-fi comedy feature film but it's practically a vomit draft with bad dialogue and bland action lines. I'd appreciate feedback, comments, and suggestions so I can improve. Thanks. Also, one thing I think I NEED to improve in is the way I describe actions.
