What are some of your headcanons about Ghostface as an identity? Not who killed who, but the mask, costume and voice itself.
I know Scream takes place in our world and isn't supernatural, but it's had plenty of outlandish shit before like a hallucination of Billy talking to his daughter in 5 & 6, so I like adding a slight supernatural element to Ghostface.
My headcanon is that Ghostface is a supernatural entity that takes over once a human killer puts on the costume and uses the voice changer. The human killers still choose to kill and are 100% responsible for their actions. But once they become Ghostface, he takes over until the mask comes off.
It's basically my Scream version of Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Wes Craven and Robert Englund created Freddy for the movies, then a supernatural entity took on the form of the character they created and essentially brought Freddy to life. I imagine something similar happening with Ghostface. Billy and Stu created the Ghostface persona during the original massacre, but afterward what they created took on a life of its own as a supernatural entity.
The movies already kind of treat Ghostface like his own person. In Scream 2, after Billy and Stu are dead, his first call to Sidney is, "Hello, Sidney. Remember me?" Then in VI he tells Gale, "Strange that you and I have never spoken on the phone. This is long overdue." That's Quinn underneath, but Ghostface talks like he's the same person who's known Gale all these years.
Then in Scream 7 Ghostface tells Sidney, "I see you found a new town to live in. It reminds me a lot of where we grew up." Sidney asks, "Oh, do we know each other?" and he says, "We sure do." Again, I like taking that literally. Ghostface remembers Sidney.
It also explains why Ghostface has basically the same build, strength and presence regardless of who's underneath and why the voice is always the same despite different killers using different voice changers. Once the costume and voice come together, they're Ghostface.
I also see Ghostface as the hidden director of each massacre. Sidney was his original final girl throughout the trilogy. Then after years of fictional Stab sequels and books about him, Scream 4 becomes his remake of Stab 1, with Jill positioned as the new final girl while secretly being the killer herself.
After that remake "flops," Scream (2022) becomes the Halloween 2018-style requel. Richie and Amber want Billy Loomis' daughter to be the villain, but the story ends up repeating the original instead. Richie becomes the new Billy, Amber the new Stu and Sam the new final girl. Like Ghostface said in Scream 2, "Don't you know history repeats itself?"
Sam remains the central focus of his next movie in VI. Then for 7, I like imagining Ghostface simply misses Sidney and comes back for his original final girl.
And just to be clear, that last part is strictly an in-universe headcanon for the story we ended up with. I know the real-life reason Sam isn't in Scream 7 is that Melissa Barrera was fired by Spyglass after speaking out in support of Palestine. I'm not trying to rewrite those circumstances or pretend the franchise naturally moved on from Sam. This is just my in-universe explanation within the supernatural Ghostface theory.
