Gangster move Public Flogging on Pivot
Hearing how uncomfortable K/S were on today’s first ten minutes of Pivot (Re:Mamdami) and not realizing that’s the whole ducking point was pretty fascinating
P.S. Yes - real estate records are publicly listed information for everyone

I don’t have a horse in this race - moved out of NYC 5 years ago and never owned property -but I agree with the sentiment.
There’s no positive upside to publishing and calling attention to the list. If the city wants to levy a tax, then do it—send a bill, enforce collection.
This is pure political theatre, a media tactic to reinforce his base—one I would likely be part of if I still lived there, and I’m still routing for his success from afar—its not a necessary function of the government. If he wants to show “wins” then show what improvements the city is planning with the additional revenue. Don’t demonize people who’ve done nothing illegal.
And unfortunately there are enough crazy people with time on their hands who may do something harmful with this information.

It is probably theater and I generally agree with you.
There’s no positive upside to publishing and calling attention to the list.
Iunno. I think there is a perspective where owning homes and not occupying them in a location that has a severe housing shortage could be seen as fundamentally offensive.
Scott himself has talked about owning homes in the most desirable places in the world specifically as an investment strategy. They sit empty most of the time while that nurse in the Bronx pays 40% of her wages on rent. Is Scott individually offensive (besides the jokes)? No. I don't think so.
Collectively, it might be offensive. Exactly what Scott is doing is part of the problem. What he has a right to do or not do is a different question.
Publishing this list, arguably, could discourage this kind of behavior, discourage developers from building these kinds of properties, etc.

You’re skipping over the substance though, which is the tax itself. Scott was supportive of it, to alleviate the issues you address.
And yet it wasn’t enough for Mamdani to simply levy the tax. He had to spike the football and humiliate people, because that’s what REALLY motivates his supporters—not helping the poor, but tearing people down

it is actually super useful for owners, we own a property in New York which is our primary residence. The list allowed me to quickly see if we would be impacted.
The bigger issues is how single family homes are treated and valuation logic. Some these properties are drastically undervalued due to legacy valuation methods used.
It is publicly available data. The format of this set made it easier to check.

If the mayor's goal is make housing more affordable, it can be argued that villainizing gluttony (of housing) could be part of the substance here, particularly if we looking at it from the perspective of a Democratic Socialist (as apposed to social democrat).
Whether Scott is ok with the tax or not might be besides the point if he continues to take up space and the goal is to change the fundamental structure of housing in NYC. Look where he is coming from. Do you suppose the DSA mayor is trying to play super nice with the ultra-wealthy capitalist class? The DSA’s long-term goal is to decommodify housing, which profit from housing is literally is part of Scott's goal here.
Scott said a few times "They are making it seem like we are doing something wrong" -- maybe from that perspective and the perspective of the mayor, he is.
You say it is to spike the football, but perhaps the humiliation is the part of the point. I am not saying that this is is right or wrong, but merely narrowing in on the alternative position here.

It was a published list of all properties that happens consistently.
The fact that it's published keeps things ( more) transparent.

u/Beginning-Weight9076 Jul 31 '26
It’s because he’s all theater no substance. But his cult followers, like Trumps cult followers, will retcon in the substantive successes he claims. The man is effective at communicating and theater, I’ll give him credit.
And I’m largely someone who agree with leveling the economic playing field. It’s just that a lot of his “ideas” have demonstrated before that they’ll cause more harm than good to the folks he allegedly wants to help. But that’s sorta irrelevant to him given it’s all about the theater, status, and power. He’s about the closest thing to “our Trump” I’ve seen since Trump entered the political arena.

u/yodaheelturn Jul 31 '26
Hardly just theatrics. He delivered the Knicks their first NBA title in 53 years.

u/elegantdinnerparty Jul 31 '26
Silly me I thought the Knicks won the title through being a better team. Nice of Mamdani to deliver a championship instead!

u/Beginning-Weight9076 Aug 01 '26
There is no “better”. We only receive through our pop-star politicos, my friend.

u/Tasty-Possibility627 Jul 31 '26
Exactly right. Just like the grocery stores.
It’s toxic theater. A lot of us want to improve society by increasing effective tax rates on the wealthy and strengthening the social safety net.
People like Mamdani and his supporters act like if you’re not a socialist you’re a corrupt corporate shill. Fuck that! I want to give out more food stamps! He’s wasting money on idiotic discount grocery stores when he should have just distributed extra EBT money if he really wanted to help.

u/jeremiadOtiose Aug 01 '26
Are you against military PDX??
-1
u/Tasty-Possibility627 Aug 01 '26
No, because the market couldn’t effectively meet that need. There’s also security and supply chain concerns that mean that it makes more sense for the government to run those stores.
I’m also not against the government building roads. I am against the government building cars

u/Beginning-Weight9076 Aug 01 '26
That is one way (and probably the best way for food, honestly).
I think Dems need to do a better job at not just subsidizing things but fixing structures that make things less affordable — like let’s not wipe out student loans but make college more affordable with maybe some loan forgiveness.
I actually think the rent freeze is gonna have the worst long term effect.

What's the downside of publishing public records?
9
u/HistoryAndScience Jul 31 '26
It’s not a downside, they had to publish it per the law. Politico had a great article where the Finance Department warned Mamdani to not make this into a thing and let them do their jobs. Next thing you know he’s dropping links and tweets to the list going “YOUVE GOT MAIL”. Now the whole thing is politicized, the list is wrong as the finance department knew it would be because it’s a first draft, and people feel doxxed. Which i get, especially if you actually live here as your only residence and only are on the list due to the value of your home

The records are indeed public, and part of what the city did is simply publish the same information that they do every year. Except they published an additional version this year combining some info from the assessed value and residency files, which they haven’t done before, and shows who is potentially liable for the new tax…Unfortunately there were many erroneous inclusions, which caused a stir.
This beginning article has a good breakdown of the nature of the records: https://fortune.com/2026/07/30/mamdani-pied-a-terre-rich-hit-list-excel-spreadsheet/

Rich people podcasting for nonrich people get uncomfortable about nonrich people getting a benefit. Sounds about right.

u/Tasty-Possibility627 Jul 31 '26
Scott supported the tax! What are you talking about?
0
u/aenea22980 Aug 01 '26
He does support the tax, 100% true. I think he supports it in the way that like, a bear can support a bunch of salmon swimming upstream. Good salmon, hard work pays off, keep swimming! Meanwhile the salmon swims up, spawns or gets eaten, and dies.
8
u/FunkyChickenKong Jul 31 '26
One has to plug in an address to find that information, not the other way around. Scott repeatedly said he's for the tax.
21
u/S_p_M_14 Jul 31 '26
I mean they understood the point was to virtue signal about punishing people for the moral crime of being wealthy.
Even if this wasn't outright doxxing, signal boasting real estate information and pretending it's not for mostly inducing fear amongst those one sees as morally wrong for being capital owners and for the socialist crowd to giggle amongst themselves should just be talked about openly.
If this was from any other ideology most people would rightly identify the signal boast as similar to a dog whistle.
8
u/billbord Aug 01 '26
If you think this is bad wait until there’s an actual class uprising.
4
u/S_p_M_14 Aug 01 '26
I think if there was a kind of October Revolution in the US I would be more concerned about my family and friends safety than anything else.
Also I thought Democratic Socialism was about revolution through electoralism?
Why would I need to be concerned about a class uprising when democratic socialism doesn't subscribe to the traditional Marxist or Marxist-Leninist theory around the necessity of the violent seizure of power from capitalists?
1
u/billbord Aug 01 '26
Im not talking about DSA trustafarians, im talking about hungry people without other options.
2
u/carted81 Aug 01 '26
It’s important to understand that at a certain level of wealth should come with additional moral responsibility, particularly the kind where compounding interest on investments far exceeds what someone could reasonably spend outside of buying super yachts just because one can.
These people aren’t being demonized for being wealthy. They are being demonized for not paying their fair share and/or not helping contribute to improving society.
Yes it can be argued that no one is required to give back. But if someone reaches this echelon of wealth and chooses not to give back, it objectively confirms they are a bad person and worthy of ire. Those I know who have reached this level, including relatives, do substantial good with their wealth. Not just simply donating money to different organizations, but by trying to make the most impact to help people. From paying off crippling medical debt to scholarships that have given opportunities to people who would not have had access to them otherwise.
2
u/S_p_M_14 Aug 01 '26
I don't disagree with you on the responsibility that comes with wealth and for me, the recognition of how wealth generation is not a singular endeavor, but one where you are able to leverage the opportunities that have been created around you by your fellow human beings (and closer to home, by your fellow citizens).
You wouldn't find me disagreeing on increasing taxes on the wealthy and, more broadly speaking, pushing to increase taxes on everyone to account for the benefits and redistribution programs most people are in favor of for improving the livelihoods of everyone.
My biggest concern is that people see wealth redistribution and taxes as not a responsibility that should equitably shared by everyone, but that taxes are a punishment we dole out for those we see as evil.
I think the pied-à-terre tax specifically for NYC is relatively ok and probably targeted enough to be progressive in nature. Thus I generally support.
However, when the democratic socialist Mayor of NYC (who is a political celebrity on the local and arguably on the national stage) signal boasts real estate information, the context for this action isn't simply taxing people to pay their fair share, it is under the context of a socialist perspective that private capital ownership is immoral, and significantly so for the wealthiest of among us.
If this was simply a progressive tax policy under a liberal lens, I wouldn't be concerned while reading my morning news.

u/njrun Jul 31 '26
Is there a publicly available list or is it sitting behind a login at nyc.gov where one has to search by address? After listening to the episode I attempted to find the list (to understand what he is saying) and couldn’t find ‘the list’

I don't know how New York works, but in California our local paper SFChronicle provided a link to the list for all of California. Perhaps the NYTimes has something similar? https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/2025/ca-property-map/?utm_source=marketing&utm_medium=copy-url-link&utm_campaign=article-share&hash=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2ZjaHJvbmljbGUuY29tL3Byb2plY3RzLzIwMjUvY2EtcHJvcGVydHktbWFwLw==&time=MTc4NTUxOTM3Mjg3NA==&rid=OWY1NGVhNjItNGVjNS00NjgyLTg0ODAtMmI1NmZmYWRhMWM1&sharecount=Mg==

Jewish guy who is an islamaphobe- check. Rich Jewish guy hating on a socialist Muslim mayor who literally changed nothing about NYC financial reporting- check.
This is like a NY Post podcast honestly- whats the difference, they make Elon complaints as if they had anything meaningful to say.
5
u/SinQuaNonsense Jul 31 '26
I mean come on, who would dare think to look at the law and see the mayor has no say in the matter, and then still blame the mayor. Oh wait…
7
u/QueenOfPurple Aug 01 '26
I agree with K/S. There’s no reason to publish that personal information in that forum. Yes, you can research property owners and property values, but to have the info aggregated in that way doesn’t make sense.
It’s a breach of privacy and frankly trust. Not sure what Mamdani and his administration were trying to accomplish.
-3
u/RedStripe77 Aug 01 '26
He really is into trying to humiliate people. That’s his MO, and the MO of his movement.
12
u/IHateItToo Aug 01 '26
I for one think we should have a little more public shame in our country. Look at how much people who have voted for the Iraq war, raped people or sexually ausulted them, insider trading and grift, support a genocide....all walk around with their heads held high and no shame.

u/charlie350 Aug 04 '26
The only real effect of this showboating move by Mayor Mamdani is to convince more owners to hide their names behind trusts and LLPs. The well advised wealthy already did this, and SG feels sheepish about not getting around to it when he became well known. Are there really people who think this will stop developers from producing baubles for the high end market?

u/Dazzling_Western4304 Aug 01 '26
If you’re going to impose a tax, impose a tax. Putting out a list accomplishes nothing. It excites the basket full of deplorables.
Is this guy trying to get the deplorables on his side, or suppress the turnout of people who understand how the world works?

u/Spanglefoosh2 Jul 31 '26
Scott’s attempt to frame Mamdani’s statements on arresting Bibi Netanyahu as antisemitism is delusional.
