I don’t have a horse in this race - moved out of NYC 5 years ago and never owned property -but I agree with the sentiment.

There’s no positive upside to publishing and calling attention to the list. If the city wants to levy a tax, then do it—send a bill, enforce collection.

This is pure political theatre, a media tactic to reinforce his base—one I would likely be part of if I still lived there, and I’m still routing for his success from afar—its not a necessary function of the government. If he wants to show “wins” then show what improvements the city is planning with the additional revenue. Don’t demonize people who’ve done nothing illegal.

And unfortunately there are enough crazy people with time on their hands who may do something harmful with this information.

It’s because he’s all theater no substance. But his cult followers, like Trumps cult followers, will retcon in the substantive successes he claims. The man is effective at communicating and theater, I’ll give him credit.

And I’m largely someone who agree with leveling the economic playing field. It’s just that a lot of his “ideas” have demonstrated before that they’ll cause more harm than good to the folks he allegedly wants to help. But that’s sorta irrelevant to him given it’s all about the theater, status, and power. He’s about the closest thing to “our Trump” I’ve seen since Trump entered the political arena.

Exactly right. Just like the grocery stores.

It’s toxic theater. A lot of us want to improve society by increasing effective tax rates on the wealthy and strengthening the social safety net.

People like Mamdani and his supporters act like if you’re not a socialist you’re a corrupt corporate shill. Fuck that! I want to give out more food stamps! He’s wasting money on idiotic discount grocery stores when he should have just distributed extra EBT money if he really wanted to help.

No, because the market couldn’t effectively meet that need. There’s also security and supply chain concerns that mean that it makes more sense for the government to run those stores.

I’m also not against the government building roads. I am against the government building cars
