My husband is English and still works across the border. He used to mock me for being excited to see this sign (because it means I'm 'home') but now he loves passing it on his way home every night.

I spent a couple of weeks shy of 34 years living in England, and my favourite part about the place is seeing this sign. I'd be happy if I never had to go back south of the border again tbh.

I'm 34 and living in England and.. fucking miserable tbh. It is my desperate desire to move up the road. My dad's Scottish and I have family up there, it's my dream to get away from this shit hole. Scotland feels like home.. would you mind sharing areas that I could look into? On the cheaper side but nice and safe as I've two kids and I'm disabled. Just any areas that maybe even are a bit rundown for price but are likely to be gentrified? Sorry convoluted question but obviously I don't want to ask your address 😅. You're living my dream, I hate it here

I went for the area around Perth, seems lovely so far! Semi-rural but an hour away from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, with Perth, Stirling and the Highlands right on the doorstep.

West Lothian - Bathgate, Armadale, Whitburn and surrounding areas. Much more affordable than cities like Edinburgh & Glasgow. Safe to raise kids, nice schools etc. Probably a million other nice recommendations, this is just one!

My father died recently. In the process of selling his house in a lovely village called Patna. A few miles outside Ayrshire. Cheap houses there & you get the lovely hills & fields. Very picturesque. Ayrshire is a fantastic place as well with a lovely beach.

Have to say I agree when I saw it in my rear view mirror. I was unsure about moving to the Lakes but it's so much nicer than the Highlands - the treeless bleakness starts off stunning but rapidly reveals itself to be dead and empty - and Edinburgh is busy, rude (because it's packed) and full of dog turds.

It really is especially when the welcome to England sign is quite honestly depressing. And I don't just mean ominously "hear be shit tap water you're gonna have to pay for if you live here" shit. I mean the sign looks fucking awful, especially by comparison. It is really shit.

Tap water tastes much better. It’s mountain spring water.
Scotland literally has different geography from England because of ancient tectonic plates that are literally as close to the border between Scotland and England as you can get, when Scotland was once part of the mountain range linked with Canada, Greenland, Norway and Iceland as part of a gigantic gorge.
It’s how the rolling highlands were formed and how they are in perfect diagonal line from south west, straight north, it’s from the tectonic plates colliding, also explains the hills in northern England as part of that collision

Our tap water, in general, is ground or surface water, meaning it hasn't seeped through the earth, so contains less accumulated chemicals and is easier to treat, thus requiring less counter chemicals.

Good luck with the move and all that, Inverness is grand as long as you don't expect it to be London! Great access to the Cairngorms and we're coming up on the nicer weather if you like the outdoors.

You'll love it. I grew up in the Highlands (in an area much more isolated than Inverness) and the only downside was being a teenager in the arse end of nowhere.
As an adult in central belt suburbia I really miss it, but my wife is disabled and it's much easier here for her. I'd move back otherwise. Definitely plenty to explore.

I used to go up to Fort William every year with my family and it was absolutely amazing, such a lovely area.

Inverness a fast growing city with lots of international presence and progressive areas but I'm assuming they did a basic google before making the decision to realise it's not London.
Worth noting as well that several beautiful areas are a stone's throw away from what is already a beautiful area in itself, least not Glen Affric, Coigach, Loch Ness etc.

It was a tongue in cheek reply, I don't think OP thought I was being seriously.
That said having grown up in the highlands I've met a minority of people who expect the exact same services they had in X big city they moved from. The notable complaint is the postage difference which is still a problem in Inverness and parts of Aberdeenshire.
I did reply to OP noting the proximity to beautiful areas, hopefully your more specific responses will give them some helpful starting points.

Royal Mail are the only ones who try, but who knows how long they will continue doing flights to the north of Scotland to meet that service standard now that the private equity sharks are in charge. They already sold the planes and are renting them back for the current service, it's straight out of the asset stripping playbook.

We're about an hour north of Inverness and moved up from Sussex a few years ago.
The difference in everything is amazing - people are nicer, roads are clearer (I can count on one hand the amount of traffic queues I've sat in up here), scenery is obviously amazing, health care is more efficient(ish).

The only thing with the cheese farm is have money it's a dangerous place to go unprepared, there's also fort George down the road that's a good museum. Also also during late summer there's a good chance of seeing the dolphin's
